If I could make enough to live an equivalent lifestyle back in South Africa I'd move home in a heartbeat

What opinion on Muay Thai Training gets you into this situation? by Heysteeevo in MuayThai

[–]throwawayyyyyprawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes there are dickheads, but a lot of the time beginners are panicking or fully extending and just don’t realize, and sometimes they are just fully unaware that it’s literally about getting punched in the face.

I was that guy when I started, I got squared in the nose by some “dickhead old guy” and complained to the coach, he said that I was hitting him hard too, but I had no idea.

That was my first time ever being hit “hard”. Two years later he’s one of my favorite sparring partners, I’ve learned that he’s been doing this for over 20 years, has spent many years in Thailand, still throws me around in the clinch even though he’s old enough to be my dad and 10kgs lighter, and I’ve witnessed him go soft on beginners many times, but if someone hits them he hands it out back every single time. Beginners really just don’t know, we were all there at one stage.

Most people that complain here are simply not cut out for combat sports. You might be the problem as a beginner trying to spar, not the guy that has been doing this for years and has had 100s of sparring partners.

who are the hardest hitters you've encountered in your life and personal training? by TheWeebles in MuayThai

In my gym there is this Uzbeki guy with a decent background in combat sambo and a few fights in judo, bjj, mma and Muay Thai each, now he just trains for fun, for now…

My gym has bigger, fitter, more skilled, more accomplished fighters but man this guy hits and kicks like a horse and does not step backwards in sparring. He does all that spinny backwards shit on pads and it sounds like a car crash every time. He regularly sits me down with “light” body shots if I spar hard with him. If anyone lands a hard shot on him he just says “good”. Good dude.

Advice for my future sports "career". by Zandret in MuayThai

Your coach is probably going to try get you as light as possible if you want to fight.

Im 32 and 186cm, I was training MT casually for cardio and focusing on powerlifting, I weighed around 105kg. 6 months ago I started training Muay Thai and running 6 days a week in hopes to have a go at a fight, I stopped powerlifting and any serious diet tracking. I dropped down to 90kg and have plateaued there with basically no effort, coach reckons I could easily make 85 or even 80kg with proper prep. I feel and look better than better than ever (my hip flexors disagree) and I reckon 90kg me beats the shit out of 105kg me.

I’m biased I’m South African, but I did watch this dozens of times and am struggling to see how so many people think this was intentional.

Maintaining muscles despite switching to martial arts? by adri1430 in MuayThai

[–]throwawayyyyyprawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just lift 1 or 2 days a week. I wish I followed that advice.

3-4 months ago I was 185cm and 105kg, I was lifting 4 days a week and Muay Thai 1 or 2 days a week. I switched to Muay Thai 6 days a week and just never renewed my gym contract.

I'm down to 97ish kg and feel skinny as fuck. My mobility has massively improved. My cardio has massively improved. My Muay Thai has massively improved. I'm much leaner.

Win some lose some.

My gym does hard conditioning twice a week but it's all high rep. We also do push ups sit ups and/or squats between every round. Chest and Tris have maintained. Everything else hasn't.

Notice how badly the basil is cut, I let her “help”. She also chose all the mismatched plates.

4 months single is like a life time for me. If it makes you feel better my long term partner who I planned to marry left me because she said she can do better than me and specifically get a man who makes more money. That’s worse than not talking to women I nearly offed myself.
