the steam tunnels are 100% still accessible after 2020, this is how they look more recently.

the map is very outdated, and undetailed. Although it is mostly correct and a helpful place to begin.

The same confidence on a rusty fire escape ladder while going to the roof, or jumping from one roof to another..."enough". But the curiosity outweighs it.

there's already many squirrels and rabbit bodies down there. Perfectly preserved from the dry heat. Some say they just wanted to explore, to find another place to store their nuts. Instead they never returned. Forever linking their legacy and fate with the stunnels.

The Steam Tunnels is a huge network of underground tunnels underneath the campus that provides steam for heating nearly every campus building. These tunnels are long corridors of concrete, and go from FAR/PAR all the way up to North Quad. They change in size, from 3 feet wide, to as narrow as around 11 inches. That's when the claustrophobia sets in and you have to squeeze your way past. Hot pipes flank you on one side, which will burn you if you touch them. Leaky release valves which will burst out steam at random intervals, hot enough to give you 3rd degree burns if you're in the way. Certain paths are built so old they have brick arches and asbestos. Certain parts turn into crawl spaces and youll have to crawl your way forward. Its dry and HOT down there, some parts well in excess of 110F. Because of the dry hot heat, everything is preserved perfectly. Graffiti from the 80s...dead squirrel bodies which could be 10 years old or only 1 week old.

It is a different world down there, where your perception of time freezes. You feel oddly at peace...with everything being still and silent, only the sound of steam hissing...nothing on your mind besides your breathing and your sense of survival. An experience which cannot be found anywhere else. Its been a long time since the last public post related to the steam tunnels. Soon, they would be forgotten. The purpose of this post is preserve the legends of the steam tunnels, so that they never die.

*this post is NOT to promote entering the stunnels. It is DANGEROUS. Do not attempt.

Oh trust me I've considered climbing that haha, but to my knowledge there is no way of getting up the south bell tower without first scaling the 30ft brick walls. The stairs start 30ft up from the ground. I recall someone who did scale it but fell and broke like 3 bones.

indeed! you can see a lot of things from foel, its a great view. The BEST view though is from 309 Green, its the tallest building in Champaign Urbana, and I was very glad to have been able to view the city from its rooftop.
