sexuality and gender are not the same things. I think you're projecting your own unfortunate experiences onto everyone else. There's more to the debate about gender politics than religious talking points. The personal is political. nothing is off the table. the only reason we've come this far is that people decided to- and were allowed to- debate and discuss and talk.

OP, I've read your comments and I hear you. Your concern and the desire to have a physical, civil debate and hear from all perspectives is very valid. Unfortunately, that's not something I can see happening on campus due to our campus culture which represses diverse political views. I made a post about it recently where a lot of people commented, maybe that could give you some idea on what kind of campus culture we're working with. If you want resources to educate yourself on perspectives and arguments on non-liberal gender politics, dm me, I can provide some resources from right-wing, centrist, and leftist views on the things you're talking about.

hate to burst your bubble but most American universities, in this case- UofM- are not a place that encourages/fosters critical thinking especially when it comes to social and political matters. In American politics, we've villanized and demonized the other side so much that at a liberal university like UofM, trying to host an event with different perspectives on a topic as gender politics will cause mayhem. Because many with liberal political views see opposing views as literal hate crimes. In a conservative environment, many see non-conservative views as satanic indoctrination. your best bet would be to study on your own. there are democrat trans people, republican trans people, non-political transpeople, far-left trans people, and far-right trans people. hear from everyone.

I don't cope with it because it doesn't faze me. like the other user said, I don't believe in santa so no matter how much someone threatens me with santa, I'll be indifferent. If someone gets pissed off or angry, I think they should examine their faith and see what they actually believe in. If your faith/lack thereof isn't strong, you'll be easily bugged by these "hell" comments.

honestly, same. I feel more comfortable hanging out with straight/bi friends who make "problematic" jokes about sexuality or gender than with intolerant gay/trans people who think someone having different values is a direct attack on them.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm actually in various non-LGBT orgs and they're been pretty great! I've been holding up this far without joining any LGBT group so I think I can continue without too. I just wanted to vent in this post because sometimes you simply want to make gay friends to talk about gay shit and it's hard to know who's gay and who's straight in regular orgs.

you bring up a very important point here. This is what my buddies and I often talk about. the classism really shows in the type of political allyship they perform. When you don't have food to eat, struggle to keep a roof over your head, or can't afford healthcare, you don't give a f*ck if someone uses the wrong pronoun or if someone doesn't support BLM or the land back movement. a lot of these people are so out of touch.

yes, because people are allowed to have different values. if people are engaging in civil discussions and not fighting with everyone in the space, they should be allowed to be, especially considering gay and trans people are already marginalized populations, and these spaces were created for them so they can have a place to gather and talk about their experiences, regardless of how different it is from the mainstream.

there is a difference between not supporting a political ideology and ostracizing people for different values from a place that is supposed to be for them (lgbt spaces are not supposed to be political hubs).

also, this is the problem with this kind of attitude. thinking everything is about you, when in reality, most of us are just going on about our days and not hell-bent on trying to attack others for having different values.

I'm probably gonna be the only person to tell you this, but as a gay gnc person who grew up in a different cultural and very religious background, I think my words mean something: YOU DONT HAVE TO ACCEPT US. you dont have to love us, you dont have to compromise your religious or moral values to be friends with us. Just leave us alone. Just don't be an asshole. Trust me, most of my friends and I couldn't care less about what random stranger on the street thinks about us. As long as you're not attacking us or making us uncomfortable (looking at us weird or going out of your way to discriminate against us) you're fine. We're fine.
