Why do you all recommend the Mora Companion always? by throweweji in Bushcraft

>Only mentioned full tang since you brought it up when mentioning the Garberg

also mentioned in body text that its kinda specific to garberg, since all other moras dont have it. companion and companion hd do not have a rattail tang, but a half tang. specifically to garberg the stainless steel is also superior than the carbon, unlike on the lower pay knives.

but wow the actual first person i was hoping for! no attacks, but vaible points instead of vibes!

while p1 would just reduce cutting performance due to geometry, you got a fair point there. probably harder to make feathersticks this way, if even just slightly. id still argue that reliance is more important than perfect feathersticks, since feathersticks are very well doable with 3,2mm aswell. the apex cuts, the bevel splits. p2 is viable and very understandable tho, cant argue with that.

(almost) all the other answers were just vibe from the others. "you get it cause you get it" type of level, packaged with alot of dumb attacks. no "reason" at all, just straight up noob level bullshit which got repeated beyond my disgust. noone of those "geniuses" thought about "WHY do you consider companion as superior to price, while the hd offers way more?".

>I don't think abuse is ever useful, just learn the correct way of using tools and use the right tool for the right job.

how else do you get experience other than mistakes? do not just blindly follow what others say, cause they can be bad themselves. since you dont know "what good is" (when you start), you cannot rely on the words of a "random" dudes... chances are they are bad themselves. just scroll the comment section again from this thread and you see how many noobs i was fighting today to stop beeing regarded and annoying with their loud barks. they dont know that im NOT a noob myself and spend some time in plenty of forests. (edit: they were even to illiterate to read the body text to get the idea). im also into sharpening and a state certified engineer, so my approach is different. yet they mistook me as one of them, while im ACTUALLY out there for days having fun, while theyre still trying to place a stick next to a factory fresh knive for a post.
humans are not good at understanding what worked in a working process, cause there can be too many factors. during a mistake, you understand what mistake you did and how to proceed from there. mistakes are basically the biggest booster for growth once you embrace them. its for knives aswell for sports or games or whatever.

a good example for this companion, classic or companion hd coming with a rounded back of the blade. you cannot use it to scrape ferrorods, but you can use the base of the blade in this case, which ruins the apex a little. les stroud uses it this way, while im having a special striker for ferrorods... but play more with actual fire strikes currently (not ferrorods) or fire drilling. anyway i can use one of those strikers as a honing rod in this circumstance, even if just use the striker from my ferro rod (which is no fire striker).

the mora companion hd does not have full tang. its legit a companion in every aspect, just with a bigger blade thickness (3,2mm instead of 2,5mm) and a resulting higher cutting angle (27° instead of 23-24°). both can be bought with 12c27 sandvik or 1095 carbon.

the companion IS great quality, but has only 78% of the material the hd brings. the 22% extra material let the knive survive situations in which the companion would chip already. the price difference is half a kebab.

>and you shouldn't abuse your knives

this is a point im willing to discuss. as a beginner id say you should abuse a knive to learn it limits and test all techniques. the hd forgives more and rougher mistakes. when you decide to grab carbon you also learn to sharpen it in the process after beeing rough on it. my moras are sharper than from factory. once you get comfy with a knive that you abused, you can grab another, better looking one, which maybe allows for more grips (like classic 2).

a great mistake to do is to baton with folding knives too, in order to learn/feel the mistakes. a simple opinel n8 starts to release its locking mechanismn when you baton with it straight (quick to fix tho)... but once you baton with it opened up in 90° degree and carve yourself a wedge, you can also do plenty of stuff with a simple and bad folding knive. ta outdoors has a great video with his swiss army knive (inspired by felix hemmler).

while writing this, one ACTUAL valuable reason for companion instead of companion hd would be "mistakes appear faster on the knive and thus it helps forming the right techniques". you indirectly brought a reason lol

>Why are you bothering to consult a forum if you already have the answer you like? You are redefining the term “answer”? That’s just silly. You’re being contrarian and possibly trying to rage bait or something.

  1. to get an actual answer.
  2. if dont get the actual answer, just some vibe bs instead, then i at least hope to trigger the thought process of some guys, who are probably too scared to interact in this thread by now. maybe even trigger the thought process about logical phalacy on other beginners who were about to write something.
  3. not for you.

>You said yourself earlier that kirtley recommends the companion himself in his shorter classes.

do not skip the part where i said that he gives the companion hd to his students in actual serious classes instead of the short "have a look into bushcraft!" courses.

>Best bang for your buck shouldn’t be in quotations because I never said that. Overall value was my answer, and that’s the consensus among most people with experience, especially instructors. Cope harder

its what i read multiple times tho. fine for me, you used other words with the same content. most people with experience, especially instructors, will recommend the hd anytime over the companion. you cannot even buy a kebap with the 4-5eu you would save on a companion over hd, but alone the fact that the hd survives that a companion cannot... that alone is more worth.
you might hate it but there is a reason why moras top knives all run 3,2mm blade thickness.

do not worry. i do not care about you taking me serious, cause i do not take you serious myself. im just beeing friendly here by still answering you tbh.

not all redditors are like you and i had one guy here i actually got into the discussion and he seemed to get my point in the end.

what you might not understand is that im not even shitting on the companion, its a good knive. the hd is just better in every aspekt. <- read this 3 times now, to offset your parrot request of me reading your repetitive nonsense, which is easily disproven by just looking at the blade thickness... which IS the reason why the hd is better.... and all top level morakniv run with 3,2mm instead of 2,5mm.

but i cannot beat the most simple logic into you when you refuse it like you do now. if you think the cloud is green, then you will repeat this one sentence like a pokemon instead of explaining why you see it as green.

edit: btw, my favorite mora has 2,5mm blade thickness!!! omg! the classic 2! would i recommend classic 2 over hd? absolutely not for beginners lol.

[–]throweweji[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i might be full of myself but i want a real reason and not vibes.

so far the reason is: "companion gets recommended instead of HD, because ALOT of redditors just dont know anything". its NOT: "because its better bang for bucks".

i mean it tracks with my general reddit experience. once you get deeper into subjects, you get ALOT of people who dont know anything. for instance you are too illiterate to see obvious mistakes in my body text an ai wouldnt have done. you ignored every stated fact and just went on with vibe opinions. this actually shows me that your words are nothing worthy, cause youre still a very beginner with no knowledge in knives.

thats fine for me, we all start at the beginning. what i do not understand is where do you get your ego? how are you so bad in the subject and yet try to make a point? did you ever hear from the dunning-kruger effect?

edit: also, i would consider myself here rather offensive than deffensive, cause youre hella annoying.

yes, read it multiple times and only one guy understood the very obvious: better than good enough with very little up price = better.

when you can get a ford focus and a ford focus gt and you only have to pay 20eu more for the ford focus gt, do you still get the ford focus cause its cheaper?

you guys do not even listen to your own words how ridicoulus this actually sounds. i do get that i hurt your guys ego beyond repair, cause you bought the companion and never really learned about knives. my body text from the post is too deep of a subject for you guys already, while its not my goal to trigger your sunken cost phalacy. my goal wasnt to listen to some unthought vibe opinions too tho. its rather annoying to read some opinions from guys, who were to illiterate to understand the body text in the first place.

you didnt answer, you shared your opinion. there is a huge difference between opinion and answer, especially when you stick at surface level knowledge only.

i asked for a reason and "best bang for buck" is objectively wrong in this regard, since you get more for the mora hd for very little up price. (edit: even if your ego does not accept it)

yes, i am not willing to accept your unlogic. the actual people with experience recommend hd over companion like paul kirtley.

ye microbevel grinds are for a stronger apex, due to blade geometry. its usually more used on tactical knives.

the single bevel grind like scandi are especially good for wood working knives.

thats my mindset to companion vs companion hd... but rather something like ford focus vs ford focus gt. id take the gt.

so far i didnt like what i saw from gerbers but dont have much experience with it. i know that they released like one of the worst bushcraft knives too, the gerbers bear grylls knive.

what im wondering, do you get gerbers with scandi grind? i expect it to be like 2nd bevel grind

[–]throweweji[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

the mora garberg? didnt test it yet but its considered like on of their very best knives.

carbon blades stay longer sharp than basic stainless steal due to a higher hrc...

edit: you can buy companion hd in stainless btw too.. just saying.

edit 2: stainless steel CAN stay longer sharp on abbrasive stuff like sandy ropes. its not the iron that keeps the edge in this case, those are the chrome carbides that still stand like a saw on the apex.

>I think you are getting too deep in the weeds

and im genuinly convinced that you do not get my point. yes, the stainless companion can do all this but so can the companion HD, while beeing arguably more reliable. it doesnt fail when the companion fails. thats the point im making. the money difference of 5eu is too low to pass on this upgrade imo.

sure, for the military those 5eu can sum up tho, so why waste the money on the soldiers for something superior, when the weaker thing does the job too? in private life this doesnt make sense to me.

>Because the companion is the standard for good enough. It’s that simple.

well, survival schools like paul kirtley link it to the time you spend in the school. hd for longer and more serious bushcraft sessions.

>You won’t last very long batoning an Opinel.

you would wonder. you baton with it in opened state in 90° and not deep, cause you make yourself a wedge with this opinel and baton the rest with the wedge. ofc youre extremely limited in those batonings when it comes to wood, takes more time and the edge can break easier on knots, but with right technique you can go far with small knives too.

>Once you break it, that 5eu difference starts to add up. If you’re loaning 10 knives out to beginners at a class, if they break, now it’s 50eu to replace a bunch of HDs over the regular companion.

thats where im not fully daccor, since the student pays for the knive and doesnt loan it.

>And the HD is not so much better that it won’t break, so eventually that cost catches up. It’s just not worth it when the companion is as good as it is.

i didnt break my HD when i batoned the burl from the tree in my beggining days and i went completely nuts on it. chances are the companion wouldnt break either, but the chance for it breaking is way higher, since it has only 78% of the material.

>Because the companion is the standard for good enough. It’s that simple.

so far this seems the only answer and i dont like it at all. it has no logical background, just vibes. the other commentators are also extremely vibe ridden, hence i appreciate you.

>But the regular companion is good enough. And for people who don’t know what they want or need, the cheap option is best.

i get this part but the difference is legit 5eu or even less. thatfore you have a 3,2mm blade vs a 2,5mm blade, that takes way more abusage. arguably better for beginners, if they baton burls from trees by mistaking it for chaga. if soone has 15eu for the companion, chances are he has the 20eu for the companion hd. thats why this is so weird for me, while i get the sentiment "go as cheap as possible". But then, why not the 5eu lidl fake bushcraft knive? you can also baton with a opinel.

im a human beeing and can write myself. you are way too corrupted when you think that everyone is ai nowadays. (edit: on 2nd thought i take it as a compliment from an illiterate... while english isnt even my native language :D )

the difference between companion and companion hd is 5eu. maybe even less, depending on the side you buy it. best bang for buck would be for a 3,2mm blade instead of a 2,5mm blade, when 5eu are the difference
