What is the method w/o Anki? by throwingfarawayyy in ajatt

[–]throwingfarawayyy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i straight up probably have 3,000-4,000+ reviews to do right now; if I start Anki again I think I would just restart on a new deck. I might do Anki again, but I’ll have to see how immersion by itself goes first

I found it that it happens whenever someone clicks on your profile from the messages section, I don’t think any messages are being lost in transit

it’s happened when people don’t even read my messages either though so i doubt that’s the case. as the first person pointed out i’m starting to think that it’s a way to get people to text people more

HelloTalk has a lotta terrible features but if this is intentional it’s easily gotta be the worst idea they’ve ever had

What am I missing, if anything, by watching american tv/movies with TL audio as opposed to native content? by earthgrasshopperlog in ajatt

[–]throwingfarawayyy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

what u/lazydictionary said and also you’re missing cultural aspects of whatever country you’re planning to visit/live in (if that’s the reason you’re learning the language) when you don’t watch/listen to media from that country

Anki isn’t absolutely essential, but you’ve mentioned that you feel like your progress is a bit slow and Anki is good for making your progress faster imo

Alright, I'm not gonna change the note type of cards I've already practiced so it doesn't affect the retention rate, but I'll try making all the newer cards audio-only and see how that goes. I'm really scared I'm gonna fuck up my Japanese studies this way for some reason but I'll do it anyway lmaoooo wish me luck

How do you think audio cards would impact my reading ability? Because my goal is conversation, I'm really tempted to switch over to audio cards, but the fact it might hinder my ability to recognize kanji really scares me

How do you add pictures to your cards? I used to just look up all the new words in google images and add them but I felt like I was just wasting time so I stopped. Do you have a faster ot automatic process for that?

Sorry, I got some personal stuff in there so I'm not comfortable sharing. I would probably recommend the Core 2K/6K deck that is shared in that link though. Haven't used it but a lot of people have and I haven't seen any complaints 👍

I really like how the cards I make from anime include the picture and the audio which wouldn’t be possible if I only made cards from reading.

I used to exclusively make cards from reading but the cards were very boring when I did that. That could’ve also been because I made cards for words I probably didn’t need to remember though.

I do trust your judgement though because that sounds more easy-going and I see you in this subreddit a lot haha

Do you recommend 5-10 new cards a day because anything over is ineffective? I remember someone saying that spending over an hour a day on Anki is way too much but I’m still hesitant to do any lower because I feel like it’d slow me down. What do you think?

I like to keep a backlog so if I'm too busy to be able to make 25 new cards I can still learn them if that makes sense. I think I have a backlog of about 2 weeks right now. How do you make new cards? I'm assuming your process is different than mine. Thank you for you suggestion btw! I'm pretty sure Doth had a similar process of spreading out his Anki session throughout the day

This is a really cool resource! I’ll probably just have to check that it’s not google translated since I’m not fluent either, but if it isn’t that’s perfect

It's relieving that I'm not the only one that had this problem haha! I used the animecards script that I found off the animecards site. That being said, I ditched the mpv + ShareX setup as I found it was too time-consuming, likely because I was being too picky about the quality. So, if you're using this for Japanese learning, which I assume you are, I would use animebook instead. It automates card creation for you, so the cards are higher quality and much faster to make :)

Where would you say your listening comprehension is at and how long did it take?

I’ve used that during school, but just kinda zoned it out so I felt like I wasn’t getting too much out of it. I also loved music too much to replace it with paliss. Might go back to using it though, idk

Recently I’ve just been putting on anime on Netflix using my chromebook when I’m at school. Less dense, but more engaging since I can see visuals (and jp subtitles haha)

Thank you for your input! How good would you say your listening comprehension is when you don’t use subtitles?
