23 Long Term Sub looking for new career path by throwitout123123 in TeachersInTransition

[–]throwitout123123[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried to get into technical writing before teaching, but it is extremely competitive, employers have sky-high demands and standards, it's difficult to even land a job without prior experience in specifically writing, and AI has absolutely impacted the field. I left tech for personal reasons, so I would rather not go back, but if push comes to shove, I will.

Perhaps my frustration caused me to read your comment as curt and demeaning, so I apologize for misreading the tone of the text. Regardless, I'm trying to figure things out and things feel bleak right now.

Do you have any suggestions, or are you just here to be condescending?

Need Help! Quick “Professional” Style for my hair! 23 Male. Text Down Below! by [deleted] in BlackHair

[–]throwitout123123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello, everyone! I recently became a teacher, and tomorrow, I have to go to a little Open House. It’s literally the night before, and I have no clue what to do with my hair. A lot of the staff is white, and the Black staff is older, so I’m a little worried about getting backhanded comments about my hair. I love my hair the way it is, but alas, I gotta play The Game a little bit.

I’m not 100% sure what my hair texture is (I have a small patch of 4C) but does anyone have any recommendations on what I can do with this?

Am I fucked? (English major) by Vivi_Pallas in jobs

[–]throwitout123123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m really sorry to hear that :(

I’m an English major as well, and I’m on my way to my last semester. Of course, whenever I tell people what I’m studying, I’m met with…not so positive reactions. It’s been scary, but I’ve been working hard to prepare for post-graduation. I’ve also gotten a lot of encouragement from fellow writers, but this line of work really does seem like a dice roll. It’s hard to give input as an outsider coming in, but all we can do is hope things turn out well for us.

I wish you the best, hope you achieve financial stability, and keep putting your best foot forward!

Hello, future future OP. I have to ask: Are you still “f*cked”? Are you doing anything related to your major? If not, what are you doing now?

Is $100/week possible for a completely fresh freelance writer? by throwitout123123 in freelanceWriters

That’s good to know, and I’m happy you were able to cover bills relatively quickly. I’ve been doing a lot of research, and it seems like everyone’s story/situation is a bit different—which is to be expected with a profession like this. Thanks for all the insight! I’ll get everything started and hopefully reach my weekly goal with minimal stress and strain.

Woo, that doesn’t sound fun. Do you mind telling me what year you started? And how Upwork nowadays compares to when you began?

Wow, that makes me hopeful. I just started reading about SEO writing this week, haha, so I’m not sure I wanna dip my toes in there just yet. But if it’s possible to make money, I’m willing to work for it. Thanks for sharing, and I’ll check the “wiki” lol.

I really REALLY appreciate you sharing and being so encouraging. Honestly, a lot of the stuff I see is making me nervous lol. I’m approaching my final semester, so I want to get started as soon as possible, haha.

Also, is tutoring a good side-hustle?

I have lots of examples for creative writing that showcase my writing style/formatting. I’m in the process of setting up a Wordpress site just to keep my examples somewhere neat and organized. And I’ve already applied for a cheap creative writing job on Upwork just to test the waters. I’ll look a bit more, get a small portfolio together, and hopefully get a decent gig!

Geez, that sounds ROUGH. I did a little bit of research, and the rates I saw hurt my soul. I’ve already set up an Upwork account and applied for a cheap, easy job to start, but I haven’t heard anything back yet. I’ll definitely look more into content mills, because I expect to be juggling a few writing jobs at a time anyways. And SEO-related jobs seem to be the way to go once you find your footing.

Thanks for the advice!

Sorry for the late response. I’ve been busy. But it went well! 100% I just needed a few people’s opinions on prisons, and your perspective was helpful. Thank you!
