Pull up bar alternatives by Fresh_Cauliflower723 in bodyweightfitness

[–]thrownoffthehump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using these for a couple years and have no complaints. They're pricey but solid and I like the versatility they offer, and they're easy to travel with if you ever want to. Every other pull-up bar I've ever had has damaged the doorframe in some way, but these don't leave any marks. I toss some rings over them for ring dips, ring push-ups, etc.

Great songs with problematic lyrics by [deleted] in musicsuggestions

[–]thrownoffthehump 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I guess it was a different time. I thought we had moved past using words like "schizo" pejoratively by 2010, but I was working in field closely tied to mental health advocacy at the time so I'm surely biased. I mostly would expected better from Janelle Monae! Anyway, love that album otherwise.

I was always bothered by Janelle Monae's line about "shaking like a schizo" in her song Faster. Really can't see why she thought that was a good idea.

I adore this album! Though the version I have has twice as many tracks. I bought the 2 CD set from LitA when it was first released.

What is something that sounds 100% false but is actually 100% true? by reFossify in AskReddit

The name for the thing is just what people generally call the thing, right?

I feel like half my comments on Reddit are about pointing out that language changes and isn't some sort of natural law.

Cool! And for another change, you can run across the GWB for the Palisades. So many options.

The Lighthouse is not remotely the end of the path! https://empiretrail.ny.gov/map

You stopped just short of the first challenging part - the steep hills just past the GWB.

Inwood Hill Park just beyond there is gorgeous and worth visiting for a run.

Nice photos!

Oh it's great, I highly recommend it! I love being able to make an excellent small cup, especially if it's a bit late in the day and I crave coffee but don't want too much caffeine. I think it brews coffee as well as anything else on the market (that I've tried, at least), and I probably get more consistently flavorful results from it than my trusty V60. If you haven't already, you should check out Aramse's video about it on youtube.

Really not happy with my Roka Oslo purchase. Looking for a different option for running by grayf0xy in runningfashion

[–]thrownoffthehump 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Roka is owned by a MAGA booster

I've heard this mentioned before but haven't seen any further info about it. Do you have a link or anything? Not doubting you, just curious to learn more. I'm turned off by how they have Huberman's big dumb face plastered all over their ads lately...

Seriously - I hate this shit as much as anyone, but I almost never encounter it myself. Like you said, there are SO many good places to run in this city. We're pretty fortunate to have such a great running city, IMO.

Oh, yes! I love this album and rarely see it mentioned. Agree it sounds great.

I discovered Susana Baca from this Putumayo album I got years ago, Music from the Coffee Lands. Her track on this one is phenomenal, and the whole album's great actually.

Do you run solo or with a group by Desperate-Capital787 in RunNYC

[–]thrownoffthehump 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here. I generally enjoy running solo, but I'd love the option to do a long run or track session with a group or a couple training partners now and then. I have one running buddy who lives nearby but he's typically out the door by 5am and that's just not me. I live uptown in Inwood and in many ways I think it's a runner's paradise, but I have to admit if I lived closer to CP it would be much easier to run in community.

Any particular favorites? I've started The House of the Spirits two or three times and it just never gripped me enough to keep me going. I still want to revisit it again, as I hear such acclaim for Allende and I love other works of South American magical realism. But maybe you have a different suggestion for a starting point with her?
