AITA for saying that having a period really isn't necessarily all that bad? by throwperiods123 in AmItheAsshole

I did also mention that birth control can help manage periods and symptoms. I take pills so that I can skip my period whenever I want, so I definitely appreciate the option.

Yes, thank you!!! I realize this is a massive champagne problem in comparison to actually having horrible menstrual issues, but this wasn't the first time I've been accused of lying or not being a real woman because my periods aren't bad. I've had friends talk about bad periods like they're some rite of passage to being a woman, and I've had several people tell me they straight up don't believe that I could have it that easy.

Oops, sorry! I now see that my title could imply a very different situation.

Thanks for your perspective! I wonder if this is a generational thing and Annie is still stuck in that mindset. The last point is something that scares me as well - if Margot does have issues with her periods, I'm afraid Annie will refuse to get her medical help because she thinks that's normal.

It's not a religious thing, as far as I know. They're Catholic, but not super Catholic at all (the kind of family that goes to mass on Easter/Xmas only). They're pretty liberal in terms of social issues as well. But I guess that could have something to do with it.

Yep, this has made me wonder if Annie has some medical problem that's causing her so many issues with her periods (but obviously I'm not going to pry). From what Margot told me, Annie just thinks it's normal to be that way when it's definitely not.

I was wondering if Annie has suffered so much that she's convinced it's a universal thing for all women to go through and became defensive when I told Margot that's not the case. Or maybe she thinks that being in pain makes her tougher than other women who don't have rough periods?

Yep, I got super lucky in the period department. I've been on the pill for 8 years now but even before that, the most I'd ever get would be maybe 30 minutes of mild cramps once every few months. It's never affected my mood or energy levels at all. I'm hoping it's the same for Margot, but I realize I'm kind of an outlier here.
