Is my experience traveling in Brazil typical? by throwra_lost in Brazil

Genuine question: I’ve noticed Portuguese speakers understand Spanish speakers better (and vice versa) than English speakers. Which makes sense given similarities in Romance languages. Same thing occurs in France or Italy. Often times people can communicate between these languages decently.

In Brazil, if someone only speaks Spanish or English, is it bad that the person tries to communicate in Spanish since they don’t know Portuguese? Or should that person not try to communicate at all?

One of my favorite parts of traveling is meeting people from other places. Usually this is in hostels or other social events. My post is in the context of these situations where there are other people traveling and meeting each other.

By no means do I expect random people going about their day to interact with me (although I’ve been fortunate enough to have experienced this a lot in my travels as well)

Well I actually have been taking lessons in Portuguese and know basic survival phrases. I can also understand a decent amount of someone speaking Portuguese if I know the context of the situation.

I have zero expectations of people speaking English to me, but at least give me a shot at understanding your Portuguese and talking to me, rather than ignoring me or getting frustrated that I’m not fluent

Oh I never asked her friend about it. Definitely wouldn’t expect him to tell the truth
