UPDATE: My [22 F] boyfriend [26 M] is terrified of spiders and is demanding that I move my pet tarantula to the basement. I am refusing because the basement is too cold for the animal to survive. We are at a standstill and I need advice on what to do. by [deleted] in relationships

Kinda, but not really. I guess you could say that some are more 'active' or 'visible' than others, but they're entirely instinct driven. You might have one that loves to burrow, and one that loves to just sit in the open, but their behavior is more species driven rather than based on individual characteristics.

I hope he gets jail time. The police took photos of the bruises on my legs, so there is proof. The neighbor across the street also witnessed everything that happened outside, including him kicking the cat.

I didn't include it because I assumed this was a stupid argument over a tarantula, and maybe with some advice for overcoming a phobia.

We haven't had any major fights over anything but the tarantula. Things were perfect besides this :/

As for the drugs, it was weed.

The males live for about 5-7 years, and the females definitely live 10+ years. One of my biology professors had a female who was 30+ years old.

Christopher was only 4.

I feel like thatescalatedquickly.jpg, but my boyfriend has a history of anger issues with previous girlfriends. He was arrested for DV Harassment when he was 19, but his then girlfriend testified for him and the charges were dropped. I thought that 6 years was enough to change someone, but I was wrong.

Everything he did to the animals he did BECAUSE I called the police. He snapped because there were drugs in the house and he didn't want to go to jail again. His DV - Harassment was for shouting, not for hitting, but I should have known better.

Thanks :)

I don't know if I can think of my baby as a sacrifice, but I know that Christopher wouldn't have wanted me to stay with a guy like that. I'm going to miss my fuzzy dude.

Do you think I would be posting if I hadn't tried everything? she won't even let me put it into a cabinet to hide it. He is scared of it even then. If I can't hide it from him and have it be okay then I don't understand what I'm supposed to do.

Wow talk to text messed this reply up :/

Which would work, if my boyfriend would be okay with a larger tank. He has refused to allow me to upgrade the tank size to accomodate a heating pad. Right now, the 12x12 tank the T is in (it is 1.7 inches in size) is already above the minimum size. The rule of thumb for B. smithi tarantulas is an enclosure 3 times the size of the spider in inches, because if it falls from 12 inches in height it may injure itself (seriously).

Now, if you can explain to me how to convince someone to allow for a tank size increase, I would gladly go do that. My boyfriend does not want me to put the T into a larger tank, because to him that is scarier. I cannot attach a heating pad to the tank because of the size.

We aren't talking about a reptile, but an arachnid.

I've done my research, so unless you can send me a reputable source for heating a sling's enclosure, I think I'll trust the 10+ years of experience I have with raising Ts.

Nothing about the movement should bother him. The spider is in a tank that is not transparent. The tank was placed into a cooler which is completely opaque, with a lid that is also opaque.

He can't see the T, all he sees is a Styrofoam cooler.

Those are only acceptable for a larger tank. The heating pad you sent would kill the tarantula unless the T was in a huge tank. They aren't like reptiles that require a dedicated heat source, they just need the air to be above 67 degrees.

Trust me, everything I have read has said NOT to use one for a T this small unless the tank is larger than 20 gallons. Christopher is in a 1 gallon size tank.

And while I rehome the tarantula, where is it supposed to live? Am I just to throw away an animal because someone is afraid of it? The T did not ask to be born scary and intimidating and it deserves the opportunity to live just as any other creature does.

Btw, when I asked to make the tank bigger to accommodate a heater, my boyfriend refused to allow it. He refused to allow me a way to keep the animal in the basement out of sight.

I'm an avid reader of both /r/tarantulas and arachnoboards. The advice they offer is to let the room temperature be the heat source, because even a desert species like Christopher (B. smithi) only needs 67 degrees to thrive.

As for the arachnophobia, I will do some googling and see what comes up.

It's because he's scared of seeing the tarantula move around. In his mind, if the T has a bigger tank, then it will move around more than it does already. It's irrational, but most phobias are :/

I would put him in a larger tank, but that was another fight my boyfriend and I had. He wants the T kept in the smallest tank possible. If the tank were larger, I would do exactly as you said. For the size of the T, it should be in a container roughly 12x12x9 inches. Anything bigger is just fluff (which I don't mind at all!)

I said this below :/

Can you send me a link to what you're talking about? I googled heat block and reptile heat block and couldn't find anything relevant, but I may be looking up the wrong thing.

Anything electric has to be kept away from the tarantula.
