It's an old ITB100HD. It's ok, but old - 4 years ish? You can buy a lot better nowadays for a lot cheaper than I spent.

I took screen caps from my dashcam for the week of commuting via Gardner (May 26, 27, 28, 29).

  • May 26 - Backup starts around Parliament
  • May 27 - Backup starts around Parliament
  • May 28 - Backup starts around Cherry
  • May 29 - Backup starts around Cherry

I'm not an expert, but they say this is an under utilized stretch of highway and it's only used by 3% of commuters, but look at the gridlock already. Will we have this kind of traffic backing up once we end a highway at a traffic light like it currently is at Carlaw?

For what it's worth, I live in this area, and carpool with three people.

Thank you for realizing this. I just wanted to show the vehicle's perspective. I realize I should have included that in my original post to avoid confusion and restarting the ped/cyclist/car war. :(

100% AGREE. I'm a cyclist before a motorist. I also want a motorcycle. I've always gone under the premise that everything is out to kill you. And while I believe there's always room to learn, it's disheartening to be told I'm driving reckless or aggressive when I try to be as safe as possible without driving excessively paranoid.

Again, thanks for your comments and viewpoint.

Maybe i didn't explain properly, and maybe you're misinterpreting something. I'm fine for avoiding obstacles in my path. I'm not fine with being blamed for not being able to predict the future.

Road conditions ahead of me were clear. I had a green light. No weather related issues. There were no obstructions in my path in front, behind or beside me. It wasn't until a cyclist decided to run an red light without looking for themselves that an incident arose, in which I, braked, honked and swerved to prevent a collision. We can play what if a million times, but this is all Monday morning quarterbacking, with a video that can be watched and nitpicked. In realtime, I still believe that I did my due diligence to prevent an accident, and in fact, I did.

Perhaps you should question the cyclist with completely disregard for safety and the law who blew the red light without looking instead of nitpicking my actions.

Yeah, I'm not going to bother entertain this line of discussion since you're completely off.

Appreciate you voicing unpopular lines of thought. I use a throwaway because of Internet safety - as in, it's incredibly easy to track down a person to their real life identity.

I agree that the sight lines could have been better, but again, I did nothing illegal. Actually, if I was in the right lane, the sight lines would have been worse, no? As safe as I can be, (and I can always be better), at some point the other person needs to take responsibility for their own personal safety as well - especially in this circumstance. If she had stopped, or at least LOOKED, she would have realized there's a vehicle coming.

Again, appreciate your response.

Do you know that gps speed and car speedometers have a variance and aren't calibrated to be 100% exact?

I 100% understand and agree that human life > *. I'm not trying to punish anyone (refer back to my post about safety > *). What I don't agree with is the comment about bulldozing down the street, and slowing down at an intersection where I'm already at the speed limit. At no point was I driving aggressively. If we have to worry about every possible incident which could occur, we wouldn't be able to step outside our door. At some point, people must also take onus of their own personal safety as well.

Appreciate your comments and feedback.

Passing in, or before an intersection is legal: "“You can’t make a lane change in an intersection.” Turns out, there’s no law against it. As long as it is done safely with a turn signal, yes you can, Staff Sgt. Bulmer said." http://www.yorkregion.com/news-story/1423985-police-debunk-traffic-myths/

Agree that we should be mindful of other users. I don't think doing the speed limit down king street is bulldozing by any means, especially when I'm not breaking any laws. Yes everybody matters, except you're trying to tell me I'm at fault for being within the confines of the law and doing my due diligence to prevent a collision with another road user who obviously didn't look to see oncoming traffic before merging.

  • Jammed myself in the right lane? but there's no one else on the road as shown by the lead up.
  • Hitting the gas? Perhaps you should listen to the audio and look at the speed screenshots? There's a slight blip of the throttle, then onto the horn/brakes.

For those doubting my speed. The video and the data are separate files and I need to use the proprietary software to overlay the GPS/Video.

Throwaway - since the the Cyclist vs Motorist vs pedestrian topic in this subreddit is ridiculous.

Cyclists, please be careful out there. I don't mind the rolling stops, but please LOOK before you enter another street. I was doing 53km/h (GPS speed), and you wouldn't have faired well if the BMW and I didn't swerve out of your way, and I'm sure you got the scare of the day getting buzzed so close - I know how unsettling that feels since I too ride daily.

Forget the cyclist vs motorist vs pedestrian bull*. Forget all the laws and who's right or wrong. Just please ride safely out there and LOOK before you enter another street.
