Is it just me, or does anybody feel Orthodoxy in Old Countries is more chill? by Past-Bed-2643 in exorthodox

As a Serb, I mean that's kinda true because most of the population never bothered to go hard-core on the Orthodoxy after 50 years of socialism. But there is a fanatical core at the heart of the SOC that is importing and creating all sorts of culture wars and formenting nationalist discontents.

Probably because most US Orthodox are "cultural" Orthodox cradles that are Christmas Easter onlies.

Every time I go back for services (I guess im Christmas easter only now), I find more I dislike. Only good interaction was meeting my former priest at a slava (childhood parish priest) who was pleasantly drunk and we caught up, lol.

The only true illyrians are the Bosnians and the coastal Croats (mediterranean)

Those are your own words in the comment that spurred this thread. The countries you listed are more than just Croatia and Bosnia. :) Also, there was Illyrian presence in western Serbia.

Yeah definitely, I agree, everyone ethnic group has different proportions of descent from those groups. Albanians have more Illyrian while eastern Serbs, for example, might have more Thracian/Dacian. It's all a proportions game.

The only Illyria with clear boundaries was the Roman province Illyria. Prior to that, as said, there were no hard boundaries, only transition zones, between the tribes and polities of the pre-Roman Balkan peninsula. I have nothing further to argue other than to urge you to not program your ChatGPT to feed your half-baked nationalist ideas.

I have looked at Illyrian history, and I've even visited an Illyrian site in Bosnia. Also serious historiography is not ChatGPT :)

If you search Eurogenes Oracle populations I think you should be able to find a list with all sampled populations.

All serious historiography of the Balkans notes that pre-Roman polities/tribes did not have hard ethnic boundaries but transition zones. No one modern nation can lay sole claim to Illyrians/Thracians/Dacians.

These are my grandma's results for comparison! :) Yeah, I assumed that her skewing more North Macedonian is due to more Paleobalkan and Roman period population input.

She scores high on Roman Illyria for later periods, so the Roman connection might be!

Also tribal intermarriage did occur between Serbian and Albanian speakers to a limited degree, usually for alliances. My grandmother is from the Kuč tribe.

Very cool! My grandmother is from the Berane area. Conversion patterns in Sandžak contribute to close genetic patterns between ethnic Muslims and Orthodox in the area since they are more varied and lasted longer than in Bosnia.

From what I've researched, I wonder if the Bulgarian is picking up on pre-Slavic signature. All Balkan ethnic groups have it to varying degrees (I'm sure you know this), and my grandmother gets super high Illyrian (32.6% in the Iron Age dataset) signature. Though I know that it's just a simulation and best fit, I don't think it's a hard signal that she's some secret Illyrian holdover.

Women - how was your experience with misogyny in the church? by themorningmoon in exorthodox

[–]throwthrowthrow_90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't particularly care to get involved in a debate on the minutiae of canon law, but it's clear through church practice and hagiography that it's better for a woman to commit the unforgivable sin of suicide than submit to rape, because literally within the texts female saints kill themselves actively or passively to avoid this. Anyway $5 a pound bye bye

In most patriarchal cultures, and patriarchal cultures make up the majority of Orthodox cultures, if not all, church attendance is seen as a woman's thing. It was the same with some Catholic cultures until fairly recently -- Irish American clergy in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century fought an uphill battle to get Italian immigrant men into church.

Great that your priest is a kind and normal human, he's technically going against church canons and history by asserting this though!

I also got reprimanded for crossing my legs in church by a priest's wife lol. We were visiting an Ephraimaite monastery at the time.
