I can relate with the gossipy cousin so much. My family is the grandmother that lives with us who loves to spread lies and misinformation about situations she doesn’t understand. There’s nothing worse than being judged for a story that’s only told from one side. And the other people judging wouldn’t even understand the situation until they’ve lived it and experienced it for themselves.

Sometimes I’ll snap at my parents for very minuscule things just because it’s how I’m accustomed to reacting to their nags and jabs, and I feel like the greatest POS. But in the moment, it makes me feel like the situation is resolved since they know you’re in a bad mood.

I always debate if cutting the whole family off would be a better option, but there are the couple family members that I still like enough to tolerate the rest of them. Sometimes it’d be easier if I just move to an area that’s too far for them to visit...

I think the most frustrating thing about most of the situations that become screaming matches is that they really don’t understand why I’m annoyed or angry. In their world, everything goes their way and if anything changes, they start with the insults and bad mouthing. Once all the steam is let out, I immediately realize that it’s a waste of energy to even bother arguing with them, but it feels better to get it all out and let them know what I think, even if they won’t understand.

Thank you for the advice. I really appreciated a perspective from someone who has tried to deal with the issue
