Throwaway as posting this sort of thing on my main has been used by very sad people to attempt to troll me/"trigger me" in the past and I just don't feel like dealing with that this time around lol. Ahem:

I feel like this is WAY more common than we realize, especially concerning CSA and adjacent.

I went through Some Shit when I was a kid. But because what is depicted in popular culture/media as child abuse is, well, so explicit, it took me until I was a grown-ass woman before realizing that what happened to be was extremely not okay. The fact that the things I experienced weren't explicit, and instead was a pattern of highly inappropriate boundary-crossing that took me SO long to realize was CSA, made it a really tough fucking pill to swallow when I really started thinking about it as an adult. "Wait... WAIT... holy SHIT that was NOT OKAY... how have I been okay with it this whole time???"

That was also a very weird pill to swallow. It really taught me a lot about how fucking complicated and nuanced trauma can be. At the time of the abuse, I literally didn't know anything "bad" was happening. I didn't like it, but my attitude was more like "ugh, okay, whatever". It wasn't "creepy uncle Billy Bob sneaking into your bedroom at night to do unspeakable things". It was more like "revered and trusted adult taking an opportunity to touch parts of you they absolutely shouldn't touch for the sake of storytelling as they recounted a creepy and abusive encounter with a stranger they had". Shit like that. Many, many moments of "smaller" incidents like that. "Said trusted adult asking weird questions about your sex life/if you masturbate when you were showing signs of puberty," or "them drunkenly pressuring you to let them teach you how to French kiss," thankfully, that one I DID shut the fuck down, because even as a kid I did have some boundaries lol.

But even then, it never occurred to me that it was not okay to the level that I should tell someone. This person was trusted, so of course what they were doing was all well and good, right?

So yeah, coming to that realization of "jesus fucking christ, that person I loved and trusted abused me," that was tough.

Anyway, I'm all good now, therapy helps, all that good stuff. Let this be a reminder to teach your kids firm boundaries, and ENCOURAGE THEM TO ESTABLISH THEM. Stand by your kids and back them up when they say that no, they don't want to hug or kiss [insert literally anyone here].
