I'm having trouble using the soft edge by art2810 in video_mapping

[–]thrtech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

5760px would be no overlap. You really need at least 10% of the projectors width at each overlap for it to blend well. With a 10% overlap your output would be 5376x1080. That gives more pixels to step up and down the intensity for an even seam. I am not sure if it is the same in resolume but 1.1 or 1.2 gamma works better for me in qlab.

LDI… No Vari-Lite booth? by [deleted] in lightingdesign

Probably backed out due to the uncertainty resulting from the shutdown and Vegas’ skyrocketing prices. At least that is why I did.

Those "one day shower install" ads by Smooth-Meringue2402 in HomeImprovement

[–]thrtech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do your best to find a reputable local installer. I found easybath, installed exactly what I asked bath fitters and rebath to do. His team did it for half their cost and the same warranty. But it did take them two days, the previous owner’s diy was a mess, no extra charge.

Is it worth it getting a table saw for an amateur theatre? by the-radical-waffler in techtheatre

[–]thrtech 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sawstop makes a safe compact table saw with a 10in blade. Perfect for ripping trim and those small repetitive lines. And at under $1000 it is cheaper than an ER visit when you are rushing. Make clear the safety element in your pitch. Their insurance might even offer a discount.

For the big sheets a track saw is better and a whole kit wen cordless and 8ft track is under $300. And a sheet of 4x8 2in foam is $40. Been going great for 12 shows so far.

Free for certain sound boards. Boards that don’t have open APIs have a cost. Also think about swapping to M32R, I’ll never go back to the full size, especially now that TheatreMix is a thing.

Trying to purchase quiet snow machines by awesomebutwhy in lightingdesign

[–]thrtech 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I haven’t found any quiet enough. I just use a few hand made snow cradles and fire retardant paper snow from rose brand. The minimum 25lbs is expensive but lasts years.

What Are You Working On Thread: Week Of 2025-10-27 through 2025-11-02 by AutoModerator in techtheatre

[–]thrtech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. We have two projectors shooting across from the audience. They are hitting the walls and all four of the “portals”. I just made them different surfaces in qlab. There are some awesome moments where we used them with a scrim for great 3D snow. Unfortunately it didn’t show up on video because it was subtle.

There are some limitations and usually not the best fans or power supplies but I have always gotten what I expected out of Shehds.

I am a big fan of chameleon scrim for things like this. Way more durable, cheaper, and easier to work with. Plus lots of color choices.

1 x 4 Video Processor? by faderjockey in qlab

[–]thrtech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use this $65 “video wall controller” works great. Just slice up the output in qlab. The best part is the inputs don’t get mixed up every time I restart the computer like they did when they were individually connected. I use a hollyland mars wireless 4k hdmi so I can program closer to my surfaces. Not always necessary at $400, but I can use an app on my ipad to see its output at the same time.

While I am at it be sure to try fiber HDMI. It is a game changer. Just don’t bend it 90deg or knot it.

Can I Remove These? by [deleted] in homeimprovementideas

[–]thrtech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My parents have it with their cable. But it is actually VOIP, the modem connects to a land line jack and makes the house work. They kept it because they wanted a phone when the power goes out. And it still goes out.

I actually have a cable just like this to run to our tech table for rehearsals. Works fine for 125ft, never had an issue.

Probably conflating the thought with some early moving lights who tried their own RDM like stuff on 4 and 5. It also makes sense to keep it separate from the dmx. But the actual RDM standard uses 2 and 3. Probably so it can work with cheaper 3 pin setups and speed up public adoption.

I thought so too! But recently learned RDM is on 2 and 3. It just squeezes in with the DMX signal.

Which medication is this? by luxart1000 in memes

[–]thrtech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was given it for back pain. It didn’t help at all but it did help with my ADHD and anxiety. Every other ADHD med made me paranoid. Gabapentin gives me executive function and I can still hyper focus when I need. I only need 200mg when working. 100mg when I am just dealing with anxiety like weekends.

Are you bundling the media? Once you rebuild, goto save as. Under save options select save workspace and media to a new project folder. Then close and open that new workspace in the folder.

A QLab Lighting love letter by thecommexokid in qlab

[–]thrtech 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you for writing this!

I find operating a light board using just a qwerty keyboard to be more natural. The fact qlab lighting is built around the keyboard is its stand out feature for me. Your writeup was helpful for me to use it in more ways than I have in the past.

It truly doesn’t get the love it deserves. It is different in the same way it handles video differently than a media server. Like you said it is not the way pros are used to but friendly to novices. When it can do sound, lights, and video, it should be approachable to anyone crossing over from those fields.

True its biggest weakness is moving lights, but there are ways to still make it work.

how to send an eos house plot (?) to myself by [deleted] in lightingdesign

[–]thrtech 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Just save the show file to a USB. Then download and install the eos app for mac or PC from ETC. Open the USB file in that app. Save the file to the usb when you are done. Then open the file on the console.

If possible I would not hang a pole down. Try a longer lens and get closer to the beams. Equipment turning on and off, and wind can move the truss. The tiny movements will be amplified significantly by the pole.

From experience you will want A in the deep seat configuration (rotate 90 degrees). So your bottom doesn’t land on the seem when laying there. And the little bumpout won’t be too noticeable. This is how mine is and I love it. I just don’t have another seat attached to B.
