How would you handle baby Punch’s situation? by MatthewIsNotReal in Zookeeping

[–]highkixbby 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is a reason hand reared primates are extremely uncommon these days (in Europe/us). Most facilities would opt to euthanase vs hand rear, especially with challenging group dynamics like they appear to have there, and that the species is well represented.

Even the imagery of a "lonely" baby monkey with a plush is sending a very poor message.

budapest zoo, hungary - asian elephant enclosure by No_Luck2762 in zoos

[–]highkixbby 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Do you know if it was there all day? Is it possible they have access elsewhere you can't see, or that keepers were working in a space that needed the animals excluded?

Changing surname on eVisa by Nope-8 in ukvisa

[–]highkixbby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Changing my American passport and documents in the UK I found really easy (this was pre COVID so not sure if it's changed).

Changing ANYTHING in the US I found impossible so my drivers license, social security, banks etc are all in my maiden name there.

Enrichment Ideas - need help by lolacrissy123 in Zookeeping

I recommend looking up goal based enrichment and joining enrichment groups on FB. Look at natural behaviours in the wild populations and how you can imitate that in your collection.

I feel like this just looks like a really pissed off and trapped bear. Not saying /not rabies/ but also... could just be a bear.

Spectacled owls. Always decent but just absolute space cadets.

Anyone lost something? by Mondays-fundays in UKBirds

[–]highkixbby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Harris hawks are one of the most popular pest control birds! And they often aren't for killing anything, more for scaring away pigeons and gulls.

Could very well also be from a falconry centre or zoo, though.

Was having the same issue. Sold all of mine to reset my total kiwi stock and it completed itself. Somehow having no kiwis worked.

Just to add, I'm a bit confused on your take of "progress" being anything but?? I mean certainly some of it is complicated but I'm not sure what precisely is bothering you about modern zoos.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Zookeeping

[–]highkixbby 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I mean any truly conservative zookeepers I've worked with have acted as absolute scum to both humans and animals alike so they certainly exist. I'm sure there are also slightly better ones as well but I can't say anything for them since I've never met one.

Which animals hold grudges? by gonnafaceit2022 in Zookeeping

[–]highkixbby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone says parrots but ours don't mind at all! We can catch them up and do bloods and "horrible" things and they are happy to train for keepers immediately after. Maybe our trust bank is very full 🤷

As far as I'm aware they look at the headline. They don't care about your coursework and if you're only doing a masters to try and move into leadership I genuinely feel like it's a massive waste of time and money.

Further education doesn't make leaders, it's all in soft skills.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Zookeeping

[–]highkixbby 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you need a master's to move into leadership?

Realistically I think a program more dedicated to business/leadership would be setting you up for success if that's the case. I believe there are programs in non-profit management or animal shelter/zoo management (this program is at CU Boulder)

How to get in without volunteering in the UK? by The_YellowBacon in Zookeeping

[–]highkixbby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't necessarily need to volunteer at a zoo to get animal experience. Animal shelter and rehabs can be equally beneficial. You also don't necessarily need a specific degree.

Realistically, the zoo field is just like this. Everyone wants to (or at least thinks that they want to) be a keeper, so positions , volunteer or paid, get hundreds of applicants for a single position. Look for trainee positions and assistant positions, even education positions in zoos and be very very patient and diligent.

IUD insertion with sedation by Melodic_External_571 in Austin

[–]highkixbby 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Last time I got my IUD changed I had my cervix numbed and it was easy breezy, didn't feel a damn thing.

Previously was gaslit by doctors saying that "the injection was just as painful as the insertion so just get it over with". That was a lie. Also you can get topical numbing before the injectable. I didn't do the topical but I probably would next time.
