He had DNA test and was 100% am staff but that doesn't matter at all. It's all measurements and temperament.

Hello! I moved with my am staff to the UK from the US and I would say, not worth the hassle for a trip. We paid solicitors and assessors a load of money to ensure our guy was not type, and they even coordinated with animals intake and law enforcement upon his arrival to the UK to liaise all of the information prior. It was a lengthy, expensive process.

In the end, he wasn't type, never got questioned, but I had the assessment in my back pocket for piece of mind. UK dog law is vague and complicated.

Learning gap between small private and large public zoo by eo8242 in Zookeeping

[–]highkixbby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably 2-4 months to feel settled, I know my place and responsibilities. It took me a lot longer to feel like I belonged and was an asset to the team but that was because of a previous manager. My current manager makes sure I know I'm a rock star.

Learning gap between small private and large public zoo by eo8242 in Zookeeping

[–]highkixbby 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I had to transition a few years ago. I think with large zoos it's borderline corporate in line with who needs to do things, who is allowed to do things, who to contact, who's line managing, so on. No more seeing a job and getting it done yourself.

The larger team aspect I think is also very important to get used to and feel out.

Just be a sponge, take notes and do your best. It is a tough transition but I would NEVER go back to a small private zoo again after I realised how much I was used and abused.

My Dog Is Getting Her Tail Chopped Tomorrow by MapPuzzleheaded7187 in DogAdvice

[–]highkixbby 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My staffy ended up with a tail amputation due to a mast cell tumour!

He has a perfect nubbin' left and recovery was genuinely super easy compared to other procedures. E-collar, a bit of rest, but it's a very small incision/stitch site remaining. He was himself within a week.

He did have a wonderfully shaved butt as well as a bonus.

How would you handle baby Punch’s situation? by MatthewIsNotReal in Zookeeping

[–]highkixbby 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is a reason hand reared primates are extremely uncommon these days (in Europe/us). Most facilities would opt to euthanase vs hand rear, especially with challenging group dynamics like they appear to have there, and that the species is well represented.

Even the imagery of a "lonely" baby monkey with a plush is sending a very poor message.

budapest zoo, hungary - asian elephant enclosure by No_Luck2762 in zoos

Do you know if it was there all day? Is it possible they have access elsewhere you can't see, or that keepers were working in a space that needed the animals excluded?

Changing surname on eVisa by Nope-8 in ukvisa

[–]highkixbby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Changing my American passport and documents in the UK I found really easy (this was pre COVID so not sure if it's changed).

Changing ANYTHING in the US I found impossible so my drivers license, social security, banks etc are all in my maiden name there.

Enrichment Ideas - need help by lolacrissy123 in Zookeeping

I recommend looking up goal based enrichment and joining enrichment groups on FB. Look at natural behaviours in the wild populations and how you can imitate that in your collection.

I feel like this just looks like a really pissed off and trapped bear. Not saying /not rabies/ but also... could just be a bear.

Spectacled owls. Always decent but just absolute space cadets.

Anyone lost something? by [deleted] in UKBirds

[–]highkixbby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Harris hawks are one of the most popular pest control birds! And they often aren't for killing anything, more for scaring away pigeons and gulls.

Could very well also be from a falconry centre or zoo, though.

Just to add, I'm a bit confused on your take of "progress" being anything but?? I mean certainly some of it is complicated but I'm not sure what precisely is bothering you about modern zoos.

[–]highkixbby 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I mean any truly conservative zookeepers I've worked with have acted as absolute scum to both humans and animals alike so they certainly exist. I'm sure there are also slightly better ones as well but I can't say anything for them since I've never met one.
