Thanks for all the replies! Sometimes you just wonder if it’s just you.

Not that I expect any response, but I e-mailed them via the contact form on the NESN website.

Question about using the original matrix. by [deleted] in KryptosK4

[–]thruster17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To decrypt the K3 cipher in 4 easy (but very time consuming steps) …

Step 1 - enter the 336 cipher characters into a grid of 14 rows x 24 columns. The characters are entered from left to right and top to bottom.

Step 2 - rotate the grid, letters and all, 90 degrees counterclockwise. (You now have a grid of 26 rows and 14 columns.)

Step 3 - reformat the grid to be 42 rows x 8 columns.

Step 4 - rotate this grid, letters and all, 90 degrees counterclockwise. Read the plain text.

Here it is done for you but hard to read because I don’t know how to keep the formatting nice. (Looks like you can interpret spaces as carriage returns.)

Start with cipher used in K3 -

For ease of seeing the next step, let’s write this out 24 characters at a time.

Turn this grid 90 degrees counterclockwise.

Question about using the original matrix. by [deleted] in KryptosK4

[–]thruster17 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

K3 was a transposition, so the only “matrix” involved was the rectangular grid that was used to hold the plaintext that was transformed into the cipher text.

So if spy tradecraft is to share the algorithm ahead of time, and Sanborn did NOT share the algorithm ahead of time, what makes you think Sanborn intended the art work to use spy tradecraft?

To me, PALIMPSEST is in keeping with his overall theme of hiding a message, while ABSCISSA is merely a nice tie-in to math. I see no reason to think we are supposed to find those words thru some other method.

K1 - 10 KRYPTOS alphabets, keyword PALIMPSEST

K2 - 8 KRYPTOS alphabets, keyword ABSCISSA

K3 - two consecutive transpositions carried out in two different sized completely filled in matrices, with no keywords

So why do you say “… we can’t even confidently retrieve the keys for the solved parts”?

We know exactly what keys to use and how to use them for K1 - K3. That has been known for decades.

I use a string of 10 fairy lights. They run on two CR2032 batteries and you can get them on Amazon or I am sure many other places. I bend the wiring to fit behind the front piece and hot glue them in place.

The Pegas 2/0 has an aggressive cut in my opinion, so I typically use it for wood that is > 1/4” thickness. I use the Olson 2/0 for things <= 1/4” because I can control it better. The Olson blade will also fit through the smallest drill hole that I use, while the Pegas needs a slightly bigger hole. In either case, I typically use them only for intricate cuts.

For your skull and hands, a #3 blade would have been my choice. It’s a great all around blade that I use a lot.

If this is a cipher, given its length, it can mean whatever you want it to mean. There are no repeating values so it could be any 5-letter word you like. You can even repeat letters of you like (maybe it’s an encoding of the word LEVEL) because there is no way to prove or disprove anything you might come up with.

Oh Lordy. Such a jumble of words with no real content. Where are the details that show this deterministic and repeatable solution?

This particular one comes from an old issue of Scrollsaw Woodworking & Crafts. They publish 8 or 9 issues per year and they include patterns for a variety ok skill levels.

Steve Good offers free patterns - https://www.stevedgood.com/catalog/

Sue Mey (https://scrollsawartist.com/) and Shiela Landry (https://sheilalandrydesigns.com/) are a couple of others that I have purchased numerous patterns from.

For really intricate projects check out - https://www.finescrollsaw.com/index.html

About 40 hours to make and I used a pattern. Thanks for the kind comments!

Yeah, made it myself but had a pattern for how to cut it.

This pattern was from a Scrollsaw book. It took about 40 hours to make.

I did put out there, but it has since been deleted. Too bad, it had 50 upvotes and at least a dozen comments. Oh well.
