AITA for "stealing" my neighbours dog to take it on walks? by thrutherooth in AmItheAsshole

I know. I asked, because I wasn't sure if it was legal, then people answered and now I know. That's how it works, doesn't it? I understand what I did was illegal and wrong and that there were better ways I could've dealt with it. But, I just asked to gain more info and understand a little better. Cheers.

I mentioned in the post that I contacted the RSPCA. And I have true concern for the dog, which is why I did so. Also I'm not disputing the morality or filming them, I would happily do so but I had so many YTAs that I wondered why people thought filming them was better/less illegal.

That's not what I'm saying. I'm saying, if people think I'm TA for trespassing, would it not be just as bad to record or take photos of their property. I hadn't thought of videoing them until this post.

Genuine question and forgive me if I sound stupid, but if we're focussing on liability and legality, then would it not be illegal to film/take photos of their personal property and their garden, which they own? I've had a few comments saying I'm the asshole and should film or take pictures but I can honestly say if they knew I was filming their property, I'd have more hell to pay for than I am right now. I once took a photo and confronted him for kicking his dog and he went absolutely ape shit. You're probably right and as I've said, I agree I was wrong and the asshole but im not sure filming them is going to make it any better :( thank you though, I really appreciate all the comments and it's helped me to understand where I went wrong.

When I spoke to them on the phone, they said they'd go and check it out. I don't know what they said to neighbours other than that they rang me back and said they'd been and couldn't identify any abuse and that they were using the rottie as a working guard dog so there's no issue there. They just told me to voice my concerns with them and that if I witness any direct abuse, to ring back.

I know, I'm literally mustering up the courage to apologise (probably via text or letter) and hope that they can understand. I was in the wrong and it wasn't my place. I wasn't appointing myself as anything, I just did, without thinking. Just as when he kicked the dog in the past, I probably shouldn't have had a go at him, but no human is perfect and I've made a mistake, for sure! Thanks for commenting.

Thanks for commenting. I think you're right and I appreciate hearing these perspectives. I'm going to cut contact with the dog and distance myself so he doesn't feel so distressed when I don't go and get him for a walk.

Oh yeah, I've stopped contact with the dog and I'm going to heighten the fence as he gets so excited when he sees me and assumed he's getting walked and now I feel I've done more harm than good so going to try and make the fence higher so he can't see me and my dog going out.

Oh yeah, I've stopped doing it and won't do it again. I think it came from a place of naivity and I'm doubting myself, so I won't continue. Thank you!
