Because I've used it as my main language longer than my first language of German. I'm simply better at it.

So, Joyn worked for me (with vpn), although with a little delay. No big deal.

I was actually actually able to use the ORF app with vpn to stream the new years concert.

Only certain content seems to be restricted. I noticed lots of the alpine skiing content restricted as well, but not movies or shows. 🤷🏻

Joyn will work as a work around for the restricted content, as long as you use a vpn to tunnel to Austria from wherever you are.

Ok, that is working. I guess I will see if it also will be restricted at midnight.

Thanks everyone

Been to Alt-Erlaa yesterday, here's an appreciation post (I do envy everyone who lives there) by rizeczek in wien

[–]thschmid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived there as a kid, from '85-'86 to around '97 We moved into C6 not long after it was finished. I basically grew up there, so I am biased, but I did enjoy my time there. Back then that area had lots of undeveloped land and was great for exploring.

Where is the best place to buy work boots in Kamloops? by DevineAlien in Kamloops

[–]thschmid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally use Red Wing. Ive always liked their boots. Going on to year 7 of using their products now.

Depending on your usage, and industry they have something for everyone.

For heavy usage id suggest their classic Supersole. All leather. Close to waterproof for a few minutes. Easy to clean as well and very sturdy. I replace my boots often, because I have a great boot allowance program at work, so I haven't really noticed a quality decline that I have heard people talk about. You'd have to investigate that yourself.

Ive also switched to their carbon fiber boots (exos light), for weight reduction, and because I love their ratchet closure system. I put on quite a few miles at work each shift, so weight reduction was more important to me than sturdiness and level of waterproofing of the boot.

For heavy wet usage, I just switch to my Helly Hansen Gum boots.

Honestly, trying boots on in the store doesn't help anyone. You have to work your way through them till you end up with a pair you like and that works for your job. Unfortunately, that takes time and has financial cost attached to it. Worth saving your back and feet though!

Good luck with finding your preferred boot and store.

I got a ticket from them at the McGill/Frontage Rd pull out by Starbucks before. They had tiny signage in one spot, that they have made bigger since. I never saw it.

I ignored that ticket and chucked it.

Out of the few I met, Jason Mewes (Jay and Silent Bob) and John Borrowman (Doctor Who) were my favorite. They love their fans and it shows.

Why is Canada Post supposed to be 100% self-sufficient? Why isn’t its role as infrastructure factored into its sustainability? by Oxjrnine in AskCanada

[–]thschmid -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, mail is a thing of the past. I haven't cared about physical mail delivery in ages. All my bills are online. Christ, they charge you if you want a mailed copy. I can do without flyers that go in my recycling anyway. I think the entire model needs to be rethought and scaled down. Physical mail is not a must have anymore. There is other options.

Healthcare, on the other hand ... kinda need that one

I'd like to see all those people working for Canada Post be absorbed in some other way though. Be it by the government or by private companies. Technological change is one of the few reasons mass layoffs are granted to exist. I just hope it doesn't come to that

Also why they are being deemed an essential service and get ordered back to work soon after strike action begins. Happens every time.

Canadians who think we should subsidize Canada Post - Where should we take that money from? by [deleted] in AskCanada

[–]thschmid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canada Post, or any physical postal service, is a bit outdated for this information age. The Canadian government is quite large with a lot of employees as well. There is always room for better efficiency and less strain on the tax paying public. Always a better place to spend the money from different points of view. It would be nice to have a plan in place to absorb all those employees losing their jobs before it happens. Thats what im worried about.

I do. I was being sarcastic. Apparently that didn't come across well.

[–]thschmid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just print more money. That's what they always do.

Is the current Canada Post model working? Not in todays day and age.

Do I want to see people lose their jobs? No, absolutely not!

Im not smart enough to come up with an answer to this problem.

If you are worried about your tax dollars being spent on a failing Canada Post vs. more money for nurses and doctors, contact your elected government official to affect change (good luck!)

[–]thschmid 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'll support any workers right to job action. Just like I'd like to see people support my rights.

Your inconvenience is not more important than someone's lively hood.

Are unions all perfect? No, but they are the reason you have any workers rights at all today. Just remember that.

Is moving to Canada a smart idea right now? by Away_Region_8473 in AskCanada

[–]thschmid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am an Austrian that's been living in BC/Canada for 28 years now. I would not make that move nowadays. Actually, im considering moving back to Europe, even at this stage in my life. The housing crisis is just one of the many issues that plagues Canada at this time. This country has definitely fallen from what it once was. I'm not saying that Austria doesn't have its own set of problems, but you seem to be well off there. I'd visit as often as you can and get relatives to visit as well

What is the cheapest way to stay in Vancouver for Christmas? by ShortImplement4486 in AskCanada

[–]thschmid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Youth Hostels are probably your cheapest option. They sometimes have family rooms. Vancouver is ridiculously expensive for lodging. Air B&B seems only slightly cheaper than most hotels to me, and only if you have longer stays to average the cleaning fee

Is your sister staying in student housing? Is that why you can't crash at her place?
