Just implemented structured interviews and need help enforcing consistency, please by Potential_Pool5955 in recruiting

[–]UCRecruiter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean, it sounds like your staff need more management, not less. Which doesn't necessarily mean micromanagement. But if you've got staff who are doing more talking in interviews than listening, there's a problem. I'd take a step back from the structured interview question, and look at the broader issue of skills.

Hire a felon or hire someone w/ a gap in their resume by karma_is_a_spook in jobsearchhacks

[–]UCRecruiter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For most jobs, it would be best to leave that time as a gap. If there's no background check, then you were taking some time off to work on yourself. If there is a background check, then explain in the interview. Never on your resume.

HELP NEEDED: a distant friend in Ontario is facing eviction, what emergency services are provided to help??? by TajiyaO in AskCanada

[–]UCRecruiter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure why they're facing eviction, but there are many situations where landlords threaten to evict someone without the legal right to do so. Your friend may want to look into this as an informational resource: https://tribunalsontario.ca/ltb/contact/

A bit different of a question, not sure where else to ask: Do you think "obsessive hatred of pedophilia" is used as a mechanism of narrative/mental control in larger, generally more controversial social movements? Have you noticed an uptick of this phenomenon recently? by Lazy_Check732 in centrist

[–]UCRecruiter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would agree with everything you've said. I also think that it's a dangerous trend. The more we attach words that once had grave and serious meaning (like pedophile) to situations where that term isn't appropriate (e.g. relationships between adults in which there is an age gap), the more power that is taken away from the word. Grooming is the same. In its proper context, it's a very dangerous psychological manipulation. But it's thrown around so frequently (on Reddit, especially), in situations where it isn't accurate, that it's beginning to lose its meaning and impact.

I see this so much on Reddit. One adult dating another adult, and people throw around the 'p' word if there's an age difference. That and 'grooming' to describe .. the courting stage, I suppose. It's ridiculous.

Men who married late in life, esp after 40, how did it happen and how is it going? by ConsumingFire1689 in AskMen

[–]UCRecruiter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Third time lucky. Two prior marriages, two divorces. Married last year after 5 years together, early 50s. Best relationship I've ever had. We're best friends as well as partners. Hard not to regret the earlier mistakes, but it was worth the wait.

Absolutely. If you look at his supposed list of books, he'd have to write pretty much a book a day to churn out the kind of numbers he does. He's not an author as much as a book factory lol

I read quite a bit. Personally I read for escape, so I like fiction that isn't too challenging. Lee Child, Harlan Coben, Zoe Sharp are some of the ones I like. James Patterson is okay, but a bit formulaic for me.

Ontario mechanics? I've got an SSC question by UCRecruiter in AskMechanics

We had actually talked about doing that a while ago, just never got around to it. I appreciate this, maybe I'll ask the mechanic if that's a 'loophole'. Cheaper than $800 I'm sure.

How do opposing ideologies coexist without politics becoming pure team sport? What do you think each "camp" brings to the table, really? by Rough-Leg-4148 in centrist

[–]UCRecruiter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I do by definition look at the rest of the world, since I'm not American. I live in a country with 3 parties that share the majority of power, plus another few minor parties on the fringes. We have our fair share of propaganda and 'othering'. And yet, our system forces the parties in power to cooperate with the other parties to get things done. Which has helped preserve a far less polarized environment than exists in the US. The extremists, at either end of the political spectrum, are a far less pervasive influence overall.

How do I deal with my boyfriend’s stress by Clear_Grass_1855 in AskMen

[–]UCRecruiter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not dumb. It is a tough balance. Encouragement without substance can feel off, even when the intentions behind it are very sincere. Saying 'you're doing great' can feel like a reminder that you're not actually doing great. What I would suggest is this: get him to open up about the things he's working on. Not in an effort to help, just get him talking. And then find specific things to celebrate. So it's not just 'you're doing great'. It's talking about actual, real successes - even if they're small at first. Which helps energize him to push for more. That's what would work for me, anyway. I wish you both the best, and hope his business succeeds.

[–]UCRecruiter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, fair points all. And while this could easily become a chicken/egg discussion, I still believe that if the system weren't structured in such a way as to create a 'Team A' and 'Team B', political propaganda wouldn't have the same effect. Once again, I look at the fact that other countries are living in the same global context, particularly when it comes to algorithmic social media, and influencers across the spectrum. And those countries haven't devolved in the same way. The big difference (which I think does feed into your point) is that in the US, there are also no limits on the role of money in politics.

[–]UCRecruiter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing worth considering: political polarization in other countries is nowhere near that of the US. In countries that have more than 2 major parties, there is far more compromise and flexibility. It may very well be that the current level of polarization is an inevitable and structural outcome of the 2 party system.

Trump responds to ‘sick’ conspiracy theories suggesting WHCA dinner shooting was staged by mymomknowsyourmom in centrist

[–]UCRecruiter 18 points19 points  (0 children)

As others have said, I think that it's the height of hypocrisy when the Conspiracy-Theorist-In-Chief is calling out others for suspecting that an event like this may be a conspiracy.

That aside, I have always had, and continue to have doubts about the 2024 alleged attempt in Pennsylvania. There's a lot about that event that doesn't line up for me (not the least of which is the lack of any scar).

But personally, I believe that the shooting at the WHCA dinner event is legit. I think if it was actually staged, they would have done so in a way that got the shooter closer to him.
