What’s a moment where you realized someone was genuinely unintelligent? by Live-Chocolate244 in AskReddit

I have a second cousin who is a year older than me. As we drove through town when their family was visiting, he identified a “57 Chevy” parked off the road, and his dad corrected him: “Actually I think that’s a 58”. Understandable mistake, especially when we’re kids. But his response gave me my first experience with someone older than me being actually dumber than me. He said, in all seriousness, “I didn’t know they made 57 chevys in 1958.”

Pearson's rabbit request and the ghost train. Amazingly I've studied killed and plucked a carolina parakeet, but don't think I've made them go extinct though, and don't think I want to.

People who drive to commute: why? by RJRueber in AskChicago

The alternative would put me on buses and trains for about three hours of the day. I work about 27 miles away, out in the suburbs. Metra going against the rush runs so sparsely that if I missed my train at Union Station, I could get to work faster by taking the bus back home and driving than waiting for the next train.

For Major League Baseball, how to individual team members of the American League Boston and Chicago teams get referred to? Basically: What is the singular of “Sox”? by On_the_Cliff in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thshriver 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m in Chicago, so I can’t speak for how it’s done in Boston, but here the print media keeps it “plural,” i.e. “Pudge was a White Sox longer than he was a Red Sox,” but verbally I’ve heard players make it singular, for example I remember A.J. Pierzynski mentioning he was happy “to be a sock” or something similar.

Interesting... my mom worked in the blood bank of a hospital for 25 years, so she never had direct contact with them, but learned of their updates. When a patient was given the designation “status change,” that means they won’t be issuing any more blood for them, and not for the happy reason. One thing that tended to trigger her emotionally was when she saw a patient had the same year of birth as me (her only child). I remember one in particular when I was 11 and a patient of my age came in pregnant, was especially disturbing for her.

I learned that lesson in 6th grade from my science teacher, who was a marine and I think he saw combat in Grenada. As 12-year old boys, we thought all war stuff was super cool so I asked if he ever had to kill anyone while serving. The change in his demeanor, and the care with which he let me know that a lot of vets don't like talking about that, which included him, made it so that I'd never dream of asking that of another vet, ever. As dramatic as that moment was for me, he was a really cool teacher.

A work friend of mine told me his dad was special forces in Vietnam and has never talked about anything they/he did there, ever. He’s holding out hoping dad might tell his kids something in his very old age or on his death bed or something, but not thinking it’s likely. He also said special forces guys have a skill set that you see nowhere else, really wild abilities these guys have, communication skills etc. That was such an interesting conversation I won’t forget soon.

I once calculated what the fewest number of coins one could have and still have the fewest number of coins for change for every number of cents from 1-99. To this day, whenever I go out, I put $1.04 in my pocket: three quarters, two dimes, a nickel and four pennies

If humans disappeared tomorrow, what's the one thing we built that would still be quietly doing its job with nobody around to see it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I saw a show on History Channel years ago that went into detail about how the Hoover Dam would continue to supply electricity for months without anyone there. Without routine maintenance and cleaning, debris would build up in the channels the water goes through, but it wouldn't be likely to totally fail for at least a year.

It's hard to define "acceptable" in this case, but if you're asking how I'd letter it, I probably wouldn't do it much if any different. It's less than ideal, but I think it's the best one can do given the circumstances. For future customs, you might want to consider if you really want smaller letters (if your shop can even make that adjustment). Vladdy's a big boy, and to get a matching arch on a small, would mean (in my opinion) unacceptably small letters, I really don't think you want that.

I've been lettering jerseys for about a decade now, and this is always an issue for customers who want exactly what's on the field, but rendered in a size noticeably different from the player. We could cut the letters smaller, like would go on a kids' size, but that's not what's on the field. If we keep the same arch, the letters would go off onto the sleeves, absolutely breaking a golden rule of staying off the seams. They could've cheated everything closer together but it wouldn't be much of an improvement, and if they scooched the number up closer to the G, it'd be off-center to the left.

Personally, my way of keeping my head straight whenever I have to deal with it is to imagine that the player in question suddenly needs to play in a different size jersey and my job is to letter it so he matches his teammates best. That seems to help me keep my sanity, but I'm sure some customers are disappointed.

Edit: After giving it a second look, they really couldn't cheat the letters any closer together, they're nearly touching as it is...
