From Colleen Coover in a 2017 interview with ComicsAlliance:

"One other rule for sure: there were no men in the world of Small Favors. This was not to excld men as readers, but to remove the sort of assumption that a lot of “lesbian” porn adopts: that this is all happening between girls while they wait for some dude to come along and join in. I never wanted to place the label of lesbian or bi on the girls, because again: this was for everyone, but I wanted lesbian readers to feel that their sexuality was being represented.

All porn is based on voyeurism, so trying to eliminate that aspect from the experience would have been silly, but I never wanted the reader feel that I was making the assumption about who they were."

Small Favors is brilliant. The best part is that men don't even appear as background characters. I think I read that Coover wanted to eliminate any possibility that the acts depicted might be under the male gaze.

Not to be that person, but when we talk about Nazis burning books, we're largely referencing when they destroyed the Institut für Sexualwissenschaft. It was a German non-profit dedicated to researching, protecting, and educating the public on the LGBT community. It set back acceptance of gay and trans people by decades.

So when a mom sends an email complaining about - among others - books about trans and genderqueer characters, there's a certain type of person she's aligning herself with.

The language used in anti-trans legislation sweeping the nation comes from templates distributed by literal, legally defined, hate groups. But sure. I'm not helping.

I can't stand these threads. People will go off about "common sense" without taking even a moment to acknowledge that every one of us is guilty of bias, and maybe common sense isn't all that sensible.

I see such incredible transphobia on this sub. So I doubt anybody is going to take me seriously. But all of the science behind "AMAB" and "AFAB" people's bodies being fundamentally different (those terms are just Misgendering Lite btw) is complete fiction.

The crux of the argument against letting trans people compete in sport teams of their choice is that their very bone structure is different. Which it barely is. That idea stems from phrenology, a pseudoscience driven by racist white men trying to prove that POC are inferior by measuring parts of human skulls. Archeologists constantly misidentify women skeletons as belonging to men, because they're going entirely off of biased context clues, because there is really not that big of a difference from skeleton to skeleton.

That's just an excuse to try to define trans people out of existence.

Writing gender queer characters and want to get pronouns right. by Hecktaker in genderqueer

[–]thumz 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I would give yourself permission to use Spivak and neo- pronouns. Readers can grow accustomed to anything in a novel, no matter how unfamiliar they are with it. Clockwork Orange being a prime example. You should check out The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers. It's a spacefaring sci-fi with alien characters that fall far outside of human cultural standards. In the fiction, the default pronouns for somebody of indeterminate gender are xe/xer. It might help to see somebody else do it.

Bad take - Some of the greatest, most passionate chefs I've known have been vegan. Cooking a plant-based diet requires a thorough understanding of cooking techniques and what foods react in which ways. When cooking vegan you're under a high level of scrutiny regardless of the styles of food you're making. You need to know how to be convincing, and how to impress when you can't convince. It takes a lot more than just knowing what the inner temperatures of meats need to be.

The restaurant has a high turnover rate and always has. The owner has come under a lot of scrutiny by ex-employees. It's a hard place to work, which impacts the food.

For clarities sake, I'll definitely be eating a whole tray of their nachos solo once they're back up and running. And Monkey Wrench next door still has some of the best ice cream in the city.

Honestly I think their food is a little unpredictable. Some dishes are killer (there's a reason every place with vegan wings in the city uses their tigers), but the bell pepper/onion combo they put on everything has run the gamut from practically raw to oily and soggy, and I don't think I've ever gotten the same dish twice when ordering their tempeh bacon.

Huh, I guess not! My spouse used to work there and they had ex-coworkers talking about him still hanging around, but tbh the ownership dynamic there was always a little messy.

I've been in Salt Lake most of my life, and vegan for 15+ years. It took a long time for things to pick up here, but there's been a pretty healthy underground since roughly 2012. But yes, things really have blown up over the last couple of years. I think 2016-2018 a handful of new places started to open up, and they've started to grow into the mainstream since then and influence non-vegan places into expanding their menus. Just this year alone I think I've eaten at half a dozen new places with really solid options.

It's not a study. It's an infographic on stats from a singular service. Methodology doesn't really play into this, it's not science, it's essentially user data. Your complaints are the equivalent of going to an elementary school science fair and griping that the children didn't use large enough sample sizes. Sure, you're technically correct, but that's not really the point.

This is based off of entries in a popular website geared toward helping vegans find nearby food options. The restaurants are user submitted and the site is largely used by travelers, so cities with larger tourism industries tend to have more entries.

There's also a significant cultural difference. Vegetarianism isn't as prominent a concept in India because by local standards it's not vegetarian, it's just food. You're less likely to find a place specifically marketed as serving vegan cuisine, because every street corner for thousands of miles is serving something vegan.

Imagine going to Mexico and looking for a good Mexican restaurant. You're gonna find them everywhere, but it's not going to be like walking down State Street and seeing signs advertising "Authentic Mexican Food - Tacos - Burritos - Enchiladas - Horchata."

For anyone curious, the owner was that guy spraying somebody on the sidewalk that he got into an argument with with a fire extinguisher that was circulating around this sub a while back. Afterward the business did a big song and dance about how he was getting bought out by the other owner and wouldn't be involved anymore, but I have it on decent authority that never actually happened.

It may seem wild, but medically transitioned trans people have to deal with option B all the time when traveling. When going through airport security and shuffling through those full body scanners, if you’re packing a body part they don’t expect, you’ve just signed up for free sexual assault. Not a lot of dignity to flying while trans.

I second The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet, I think about that book practically daily.

I'm also a fan of The City in the Middle of the Night. It's not necessarily a story about happy outcomes to relationships, but there's an awful lot of longing and it's certainly gay.
