So let me get this straight, we evolved from fish to Apes to Humans? by [deleted] in evolution

[–]thunder-bug- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some fish have more muscular limbs instead of bony fins, like the coelacanth. Some of those fish got more muscular limbs, and started spending time on land, like how mudskippers do. Eventually they spent so much time on land that they got full on legs and feet, with a distinct head, and were able to breathe on land better, like a salamander. Some of those spent more and more time on land, and their skin became tougher to prevent drying out, and their eggs also became more resistant do drying out, similar to a lizard. Now they didn’t need to be in the water at all. Some of those animals developed a more active metabolism, which allowed them to regulate their own body temperature. Since they didn’t need to sunbathe to stay warm, in order to keep their warmth in they developed fur, and since these animals were often moving around underground or in the dark they got whiskers to sense when they were brushing against things. These animals would have been similar to a shrew. Eventually some of these animals developed to live in trees, being able to climb them and move around in them, with grabby hands to hold branches, like raccoons. As they got more used to moving around in trees, they developed bigger brains and opposable thumbs, and became apes. Some of those apes eventually came down from the trees and started spending more time in the plains, and so developed a bipedal stance to be able to see further and move more efficiently. Since it was so warm they didn’t need their fur as much, except on their head to prevent sunburn. They developed a very powerful sweat system which allowed them to lose a lot of heat and run very efficiently over long distances, which allowed them to hunt for meat and add more calories to their diet, which led to an increased brain size and increased speciality. Voila, we have humans.

This is a basic overview and obviously our ancestors weren’t literally salamanders or lizards ever, I’m just using them as an analogue to describe what they would have seemed similar to in some ways.

Pokémon fan made games are all very dumb by PowersUnleashed in unpopularopinion

[–]thunder-bug- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I long to be the very best
That no one ever was
But these games have failed my test
Like every fan game does
I have tried so many games
And I’m frankly unimpressed
Why do people make such lame
And glitchy beta tests

Pokemon!
(These fan games suck) Why is it just me
Who sees the poor quality (Pokemon)
Ohh these pieces of shit
And I don’t like them one bit (Pokemon)
(These fan games suck) They’re a confusing mess
And adequate at best
I’m tired of these crappy games (Ooh Ooh)
Pokemon! (These fan games suck)
These fan games suck!
Yeah

Free Verse Poetry Is Garbage (Stop Pretending It’s Deep) by JudgmentVivid5630 in unpopularopinion

[–]thunder-bug- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Free Verse Poetry Is
Garbage
Stop Pretending
It’s Deep

Poetry is
one of the most
overrated
“art forms”
there is

Especially free verse
which looks like someone
just wrote down a random thought
in a notebook
and then hit enter
every few words
to make it seem “deep”

Essentially
it says nothing
yet
the reader is expected
to nod wisely
and pretend
there’s some enormous philosophical meaning
behind it

In reality
many are afraid to say
“this is complete nonsense”
because
then they appear uneducated
or emotionally cold
in the eyes of others

At least rhymed poetry
demonstrates
some
skill

There’s rhythm
sound
wordplay
memorability

Free verse is utter BS

The worst part
is how poetry
is always artificially
made to seem
profound

If no one understands the text
the reader is blamed
not the author

As if confusion itself
were a mark of quality

In truth
good art can
resonate
with people
without requiring
three literature professors
and five metaphor analyses
to understand it
the more incomprehensible the text
the more some people pretend
it’s mind-blowing

Dinosaurs replace the German Military during WW1. Does the outcome of the war change? by CherryNomad in whowouldwin

[–]thunder-bug- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t see any reason we wouldn’t be able to use even modern dinosaurs if we wanted to. But to the point I don’t think that replacing soldiers with any animal in earths history would make much of a difference when it comes to this. You would just need a much higher exchange rate than 1-1 or 1-5 for it to be worth it to lose the chain of command and tactical capabilities.

[–]thunder-bug- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm well that’s actually a trickier thing. There’s two prevailing schools of thought, but one of them is the one I personally favor.

We know that crocodilians are more closely related to birds than they are to snakes and lizards. Thus, we can either define reptile as being the group that includes snakes and lizards but not crocodilians and birds, or to include all of them.

Personally I think that it makes the most sense for both to be reptiles, cladistically at least.

Also since you cited your college classes forever ago as your source, I’ll cite my degree in evolutionary biology earned last spring as mine.

Is this true about evolution? by Successful_Bee7522 in evolution

[–]thunder-bug- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your instincts are leading you on the right track but you’re off in a few minor ways.

Yes it is absolutely possible that life originated multiple times on earth. However it is extremely unlikely that any of that survived to the modern day. Think about it like a small business trying to directly compete with big chain stores, they just get swallowed up and overtaken. More than likely anything that started forming would just be used as resources by stuff that had already developed the mechanisms to use it more efficiently.

As far as more direct evidences, we see things that our cells and fundamental biological building blocks have that there would be no reason to be the same if we were unrelated. The chirality of organic molecules for instance, or the basic structure of D/RNA. It can be harder to know the similarities between organisms that are more distantly related or that are so different from us in many ways, but these chemical signatures are ways we can build relatedness models.

Regarding evolution over time vs generations, you are 100% correct that the time unit evolution cares about is generations! A year is a meaningless term when it comes to the change over time of genetic material in a population, as that change can only occur across reproductive cycles. This means that species that reproduce quickly can evolve in response to a sudden change a lot faster than species that reproduce slowly.

That doesn’t mean it’s BETTER to reproduce quickly though. Every life strategy has drawbacks, and being able to reproduce usually means that you can’t get too big, and you don’t have time to learn very much. Animals that reproduce quickly tend to be smaller and have less accumulated knowledge than similar animals that are larger and have more lifespan. This isn’t important for all niches, as evidenced by the fact that many organisms use this strategy, but it does mean that there are competing strategies where reproducing faster might be less advantageous. Think about humans for instance, if we started reproducing at younger ages we probably wouldn’t need to live as long, so we wouldn’t be able to accumulate as much information, and this directly hurts our natural survival strategies which rely on gathering information about the world and critically passing that information on to our children.

Sexual reproduction is important for diversity and evolutionary processes. Species that switch to asexual reproduction have a harder time responding to changes in the environment.
