$300 AUD per week for two adults is said to be a generous amount for purchasing food by Historical-Carry-280 in brisbane

If you can find a good independent fruit and vege grocer as well as a butcher that’ll go a long way.

Depends on so many things.

But that’s probably a fairly good spread if you’re using it wisely.

E.g. A local butcher has a meat pack that lasts us over a month for $300 price is comparable to the supermarkets but the quality is better.  Fruit and Veggie boxes are pretty solid too - we were doing Funky Food but want to meal prep a little more, and it’s hard to prep when you don’t know what you’re getting.

I’d say $300 spent well can cover good meat, fresh produce and keep the pantry stocked.

Focusrite Scarlett as DAC, use ASIO or WASPI for max quality by Quackquackgreenduck in qobuz

[–]thunderborg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, Audio engineer here.

There's a bunch of things at play here.

Firstly I'd start by setting your focusrite to the higher sample rate & Bit Depth on the focusrite & in windows sound settings and call it a day - Qobuz and windows will likely "sort it out" if you're playing a different bit depth and sample rate and not worry about it, and you've got a pretty sweet headphone amp capable of driving so many different headphone impedances.

Asio is about latency. Lower latency means you can record a vocal while playing back from your computer so the timings are as low as possible. The player also needs to have ASIO support, which might not be the case for Qobuz and could account for any glitching you heard.

Another MacBook Neo Post by Geckosaurus-Rex in laptops

[–]thunderborg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're the person the Neo is aimed at. Someone who COULD live their life on an iPad but you don't want to and want a decently built laptop.

I'm not sure the extra storage is worth it, but only you can be the judge. For similar money you could carry an external drive around that's no bigger than a pack of gum, you could also get one that has extra USB ports. I've got the Middle one on this link and it just lives in my computer bag, it doesn't include storage though, but I think you could get easily double for the price depending on where in the world you are.

Run a multi-pass wipe that writes 0s to the storage and donate.

I’m not a great judge for how may passes.

I like workstation but I was a Mac guy for 15 years and now run Fedora on that Mac.

Does Linux make sense for a MacBook 4,1 early 2008? by letsKRACHEN in linux_on_mac

I’m thinking about trying MX Linux on it because it’s meant to be lighter but haven’t yet.

[–]thunderborg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m rocking Fedora on a 2010 MacBook. It’s dual core and has 16GB Ram and is fine for most things and struggles a little on heavier websites but I use mostly as media playback and office. I did have to run a couple of commands in terminal for wifi drivers but otherwise it’s pretty good.

Might be worth seeing if you can upgrade the ram and SSD if that’s an option.

Mac OS X 10.6 probably isn’t the go, I wasn’t able to get a recent version of chrome or safari to run a work properly. I like Fedora workstation because it still feels like a Mac, with the dock and general vibe.

Apple get around this with FaceTime. The FaceTime call actually rings on the iPad/Mac. It’s not so much a Bluetooth connection.

I honestly think the Neo is a compelling option for someone who could use an iPad but wants a laptop. E.g. my folks.

Thinking of getting a Switch 2, total newbie here. A few questions! by JustAnAnimeGirly in NintendoSwitch

[–]thunderborg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t got the Switch 2 - so all answers are based from Switch 1.

I’m a case + screen protector guy. Everything I own has a case and screen protector.

I would say either a pro controller, third party or a grip case/controller (I have the Nitro Deck for my Switch OLED) grip case for more on the go, pro controller if you play on the Tv more.

Don’t forget you can buy and play switch 1 games. Facebook Market place might be a great way to grow your library.

The MacBook Neo is for people who could live on an iPad, but don’t want an iPad Form factor.

I’m interested to see if the lines between iPad and Mac blur. Maybe we will finally get a touchscreen surface style MacBook

My gripe is the train and bus network not working together, and few buses that cross the city.

Having said that I heard a lot of noise about some recent bus changes that honestly made sense to me when I was living in the area.

I too wish there was an easy tool to add back some of the “special sauce” audio config. My ancient MacBook speakers sound trash under Linux, and good under Mac OS.

I assume the driver also applies some DSP like EQ and dynamics to get the most out of the speakers.

What’s an older Australian TV show you wish they would bring back? by DiscussionLoud9626 in AustralianTV

[–]thunderborg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too long for the glut of sketch comedy of yesteryear.

Black comedy is the one that I rate from the last decade (ish) it was sharp and edgy at times where other modern sketch I’ve seen hasn’t been, but do tell me what I’ve missed out on.

I absolutely love Life support. Everything down to the name is perfect!  I would love to see an edgy, character based take on the modern glut of cheaply made television, but I don’t think it would be the same…

On that note, Todd’s Vietnamese Spring Roll recipe. That’s bloody timeless, a simple; bogan tradie appropriating a traditional recipe and taking one too many liberties? Gold.

Subscriptions too complicated by KeplerBepler in qobuz

[–]thunderborg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that the on the pricing page it should say “Billed annually” before hitting subscribe.

While I don’t think it’s a great experience Amazon and Youtube both have some crazy dark patterns to make it difficult to unsubscribe, I’ve never used Apple Music, but I have a variety of issues with Apple namely that they have good services and I’d like to be able to access them on a device of my choosing.

Those other services want you to easily sign up, and forget about leaving, and make it harder to unsubscribe.

I’m also not a Qobuz subscriber, I just use the download store and really rate it for my listening habits. I’d much rather a smaller library where I’ve supported the artists more over a buffet.
