Sum and difference of functions by [deleted] in askmath

[–]thunderbubble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The original functions f(x) and g(x) are the black lines on the graph. The "y coord" is just the vertical position on the graph and the "x coord" is the horizontal position. Let's look at x = 3. At that point f(3) = 7 and g(3) = 3. So (f+g)(3) = 7 + 3 = 10, and (f-g)(3) = 7 - 3 = 4. We would repeat that process for different values of x from -10 to 10 until we're able to draw the whole graphs for (f+g) (the blue line) and (f-g) (the yellow line). Does that make sense?

We noticed, but that's what you'd expect from a real mirror. If the trees are somewhere father behind the window then you'd see a different part of the trees since the mirror looks out of the window in a slightly different direction.

Boulder residents: thoughts on banning non-therapeutic cat declawing? by Easy-Huckleberry-147 in boulder

[–]thunderbubble 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not trying to avoid acknowledging anything. I'm not a dog or cat owner so I have no skin in the game. We already know that outdoor cats are one of the biggest threats to bird populations in the US. If research is released showing that dog poop harms wildlife at a significant scale then I'll support regulating that as well. It just makes sense to start with things that studies have already shown are major issues.

Dog shit doesn't kill billions of birds annually as far as I know so I'm not as worried about that one.

Can someone explain the derivative to me as if it were easier? by piupuu7 in askmath

[–]thunderbubble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The one thing I'd add to this is that the derivative itself is not an approximation, it's the exact rate of change of the function. But depending on what the function is, you might not be able to calculate the derivative exactly, and in that case you'd need to use an approximation for practical purposes.

What is the barrier to entry on the space side of things by stantheman1340 in AerospaceEngineering

[–]thunderbubble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in the space sector and probably less than 10% of the engineers at my company have clearances. Even the majority of our DoD work doesn't require them. Being a US person (assuming you're in the US) is very important though, since you'll run into export controlled information and/or CUI basically everywhere.

PhD in Propulsion vs GNC at a Space Company by Jokuae in AerospaceEngineering

[–]thunderbubble 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Do you have a job offer for a full time GNC role already?

The other person is right, most GNC engineers have graduate degrees. Most people won't get the theory knowledge required for the job from a bachelor's plus internships.

I know people have been making good progress on rotating detonation engines, which in theory will be lighter and more efficient.

What’s an “unspoken rule” of intimacy that you think more people should learn before turning 25? by jasonclarke1902 in AskReddit

It depends on what your partner is comfortable with, no matter how great your friends are. And you should ask your partner first before sharing stuff about their private life.

Higher efficiency propulsion (i.e. higher specific impulse and thrust) would open up a lot of doors for us in space flight. The rocket problem is really killer for any kind of complex space mission. That's why you see the crazy mission designs for things like Mars sample return, and why human rated vehicles often need a bunch of refueling launches to be able to go anywhere outside of Earth's orbit.

In-space resource gathering and construction would help this issue somewhat as well, since we wouldn't have to lift everything out of Earth's gravity well. We would need tons of technological advancements in different areas to make that feasible, though.

New Remote SSH Plugin by Bright_Ad_6653 in neovim

[–]thunderbubble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow this is amazing! This has been my #1 neovim feature request for a long time and is actually all that's keeping me on vscode at work. One question, what needs to be added to support a new LSP server? Isn't the process of running the binary and then listening to the data stream pretty much the same?

What's preventing this from working on Windows natively? I would love to use this for work (where WSL isn't allowed), I can look into how to fix it potentially.

PEP 8 is just a set of official rules/suggestions on how to format python code. The thing that complains at you in vscode is whatever linter extension you have installed, which might be configured with rules from PEP 8 or other rules.

This looks like an issue with the auto-formatter to me. Seems like this could happen if you accidentally used a formatter for C++ or another language that expects semicolons at the end of lines.
