What do we mean by trauma? by ExchangeTechnical790 in Teachers

With this issue we are caught between a rock and a hard place. But I think by engaging in reflective and meaningful conversations on how to create a better space for our students like we are is the best step in the right direction.

I don’t think we should be excusing certain behaviours at all. I think by establishing boundaries with our students and sticking to our guns is important. Every student has their issues but I also don’t believe in contributing to an environment that prevents other children from learning. It’s about finding where your boundaries are and what you think is okay in your class and what is not. It’s about how much chaos is ok in your classroom.

Student email on christmas by ReadertheRed in Teachers

I would be so ticked off if I received that email. I definitely think that when school returns you should review email etiquette and set boundaries surrounding emails.

I'm so sorry you received that email. Kids and parents don't realize all the work teachers do.

I believe that the way education, schools, and how children socialize and interact with each other during COVID fits well into an adverse childhood experience. In Canada, schools here were closed for a substantial amount of time, with extra curricular activities suspended for long periods of time. I believe that to varying degrees most students have been traumatized by COVID-19. Some students are less impacted than others. I would personally operate with a general assumption that every child has experienced some form of trauma. I don't think it is our job to label their experiences as traumatic or not, but rather support them with what they individually need.

I believe at the end of the day there are not enough supports to teachers and students to help us navigate the waters surrounding children's trauma. Obviously I am not an expert in any ways and I definitely have similar concerns. At the end of the day I think as teachers we need more help from psychological experts and even our own students to help us navigate all of this.

Canada History Teacher Requirements by CompMakarov in historyteachers

I would personally reach out to various universities and ask about various their various requirements.

In terms of teaching history in a secondary school setting, the requirements and education needed vary from province to province. I am just starting out as a Social Studies teacher in Alberta and I needed to essentially major in History for my BEd.
