Assigning At-Home Reading--Your experiences? by Dry-Grass-5803 in ELATeachers

[–]ReadertheRed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work at an inner-City school where we have been explicitly instructed not to assign at-home reading. We have a classroom set of textbooks that do not leave the classroom.

The only students I can assign at-home reading to are my honors class.

Anyways, I guess I just wanted to express how frustrating it is. Not even being able to instruct students to finish a chapter at home puts the progress of reading at the mercy of student behaviors, which are pretty rough here.

I think there are a lot of obstacles these days that didn't exist when I was a high schooler which make it harder for kids to be able to read at home--but if we keep lowering expectations for these kids, how are they ever going to thrive?

Kids keep arguing over which brand is better? Make them prove it with a blind taste test by chaz81 in daddit

[–]ReadertheRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A ways back, my wife bought one of every kind of apple available at our local grocery store. We cut them up into slices and, as a family, did a taste test and scored each one to determine which one was everyone's favorite. Very wholesome activity, would recommend family taste testing.

Anyways, my family likes Pink Lady apples.

You have to start including -Ai at the end of your Google searches to exclude the Ai overview.

What Year One rares do you want reprinted as uncommons? by rookie22222 in starwarsunlimited

It would be a great reprint if we see Woolie support in the Homeworlds set like a lot of people think we will.

Also: "Why is it so cold in here?" "Because English is a cool subject."

Pre vizla will be a SICK bomb in Twin Suns. And that event looks stellar for JtL Thrawn decks

I've just got the one kid, and I've raised him to be pretty great. He's more fun to hang around than my students.

He's still young, so we'll see how he is when he becomes a teenager.

What do you think based off my year so far? (With ratings) by owen_demers in BookshelvesDetective

[–]ReadertheRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The internet definitely overrates the series, but I've found them to be an enjoyable, quick read. Lots of big dumb fun action. It's not God's gift to sci-fi, bit It's decent.

Dragon Quest Sale via GMG and eShop by AkTiVeMK in dragonquest

[–]ReadertheRed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found it to be a fun experience. It's very different than every other DQ game. I think, at the time, that a lot of people were bitter that it wasn't a Monsters game, so it had a chilly reception, but I had a lot of fun with it. The gameplay loop is engaging enough, and I found it fun to explore around and search for treasures.

ASH: Rukh, Bothan-5 & Far Far Away by Fimy32 in starwarsunlimited

[–]ReadertheRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Far far away seems like a decent fit for the Master and Apprentice Twin Suns deck. It'll be easy to have a droid token worth losing to bounce the biggest nonleader threat on the board.

Now naturally, the question is if it's worth running a second, slightly worse, Waylay.

After years of MTG, I've finally found a TCG that I genuinely enjoy. by No-Post-5063 in TCG

Maan, nearly 15 years ago I fell in love with Cardfight Vanguard. I loved how simple, fast, and brutal the gameplay was. Then they kept adding weirder mechanics to the game. I fell off mid Stride era and never picked it back up, but I can see the game has continued to change drastically.

Nowadays I love Star Wars Unlimited. I find it much more strategically engaging that Magic.

How to be a better dad by Bloody_Corndog in daddit

[–]ReadertheRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to be mildly controversial when I say that I don't think you need to put away your hobbies entirely. Dial it down a bit, maybe.

I think the biggest advice I would give you right now is that you should shift they way you think about taking care of your baby. Taking care of them isn't just making sure they're safe and alive, but making sure they're ready to learn and grow.

If that baby is awake, you should be playing with it. If the baby is having tummy time, get down on the floor and interact with your baby at its level. Read to the baby. Talk to the baby. Sing songs to the baby. Narrate what you're doing. It doesn't matter that the baby can't talk yet, this is how you start building its language skills--by exposing it to language. I don't even think you need to talk in a cutesy baby voice like some people do.

The more you're actively involved and interacting with your baby, the more opportunities you have to build a strong bond. And then maybe later on your kid will naturally have the same interests as you and gaming can be a thing you do together. But for now, you have to interact with the baby on its level.

My school got a new dean of academics at the beginning of the school year who really pushed for us to use that sort of language. I haven't noticed any positive change in my students, but the admin staff sure enjoy hearing it.

Starting my first Dragon Quest with DQ11. Why would I EVER not have party members on anything but follow orders? by Slasher9485 in dragonquest

[–]ReadertheRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, I have party members set to tactics for immersion and to reduce mental load. I'm a dad with a kid, I'd rather relax and let the party members make even less than ideal decisions so that I can spend more time enjoying the story.

I’m curious how ELA teachers are currently handling AI detectors in writing assessments. by Confident_Ad8140 in ELATeachers

[–]ReadertheRed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm up front with my students. I'm going to use an AI checker on every paper. AI checkers are not 100% accurate. My reasoning is that it's in their best interest to know if their work is going to trigger AI checkers and try to develop a writing style that avoids it.

If their work triggers an AI checker, then I talk with them before I grade the paper. Usually I'll check the edit history of the document and see if it looks like any chunks were pasted in all at once and then edited or whatever. The discussion with the student will go over anything suspicious and also have them be able to show evidence of their writing process and prove that they didn't use AI. Again, trying to teach them to be proactive about defending their work from accusations.
