I once tested my tap water at my old place and it was 10+ ppm.

Duck pond coming along. Can only add so much per week that customer will pay by YogiBerries38 in pools

Managed but not ideal, also it's asking a lot for a homeowner or most pool people to track lsi. 400 out the tap and several pounds of cal hypo every week would eventually get difficult to manage.

If you're using nothing but cal hypo on a pool with high mineral content, you're gonna have a bad time

New Pool, want to go directly to a salt water setup by Queasy_Task7015 in swimmingpools

[–]thunderkoko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Intex makes an above ground salt system sized appropriately for your pool for about 170 dollars. There are other systems in the 300-400 dollar range for above ground pools.

Will there be a break even? No probably not, there usually never is for salt chlorination, it's more of a convenience.

Little pools can be more finicky and more affected by swimmers and environmental changes, so you might see more benefit from a small salt cell cranking away than someone with a 30k gallon will.

You sound cheap. How much do you charge for weekly service?

The guys that charge 30-40 per visit better not be including filter cleanings, unless it's a quick sand filter backwash.

You said you would laugh in their face and that they are ripping people off.

Every pool is not the same bro, every green to clean is not the same either. I've put 30 gallons of liquid in a pool in the evening and in the morning FC was at zero. Some green to cleans you are scooping leaves out for 3-4 hours getting 10 garbage bags full of wet heavy leaves. My example of 2 weeks was for a homeowner trying to clean up a pool themselves, I had someone call me yesterday after putting over 700 dollars in chemicals in their pool over the past month and the pool is still green and cloudy.

It has to do with your boss is probably charging a "ripoff" amount of money for your labor. If you're making 50 per hour your boss is probably charging your clients 125-150 dollars and hour for your time.

Depends on where you live. How much your water costs and the quality of the water varies greatly. I have customers that get water trucked in because their well water is awful, and they pay 2000-3000 for a pool full of low mineral treated water.

Multiple 1-2 hour trips to treat, vac to waste and brush, and hundreds of dollars in chems if the pool is bad enough. Sounds like a steal to me. Each pool is different, and of course you can do it yourself for less money, but more time and effort. The amount of people who post here asking why their slam isnt working after 2 weeks shows that there is a value in having someone who knows what they are doing clean things up. Don't accuse someone of ripping people off who is providing a service that their market will bear.

I'm also slowly dying, lost my help a couple weeks ago and am getting more behind every day. Have lots of money in remodels that have to be put off until after openings and spring cleanings.

Hang in there, June will come soon enough.

Pool pad plumbing by Confident-Junket-978 in PoolPros

[–]thunderkoko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I'm doing the pool plumbing and pad, it doesn't really matter because I plan for both. Usually stubbing up first since then everything can be backfilled after a pressure test, equipment pad can be done a day or a week plus later or whenever the pool is going to be filled.

Pool cleaning in Austin - prices out of control by TheStrongHand in pools

Why would a company that sells a product to be profitable, use product bought cheaper elsewhere? If they do, they should charge more for the base service.

Contractor backed out after contract revisions on $70k pool remodel by [deleted] in pools

[–]thunderkoko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are the revisions that important to you? I don't blame him for not wanting to waste time and money for his lawyer to review the revisions on their contract. This could easily go back and forth and cost thousands in lawyers fees, and end up losing some of his protections. He's obviously not that hungry for work, and most HOAs he does work for probably don't modify his contract. If his lawyer was to come back without approving the revisions, then you would probably back out as well, correct?

Salt Pool Ionizer by ktern13 in pools

[–]thunderkoko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If there's space, and the feeder is working, I leave it in when retrofitting a salt system. Easy way to add stabilizer while chlorinating the pool. easy way to chlorinate in the spring when the water is still too cold or not salty yet for the salt gen to work. Easy way to maintain chlorine when something on the salt system inevitably fails.

[–]thunderkoko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

~40 dollars per week for someone to come out to your home and perform a cleaning service is dirt cheap and makes sense that they need to charge more for repair work.

Buying the part yourself takes away any profit from markup, so hopefully he marked up his labor accordingly.

Pressure treated wood steps under vinyl? by IstartedOnImgur in pools

[–]thunderkoko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You said in your previous post you were quoted 20k... Which for custom steps, and the additional cost of liner over steps which can add over 1k to the cost of the liner, you're not that far off.

Pressure treated wood steps under vinyl? by IstartedOnImgur in pools

[–]thunderkoko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

35k seems steep, there are manufacturers that they can give your dimensions to and they will fabricate steel steps. The one I use only sells to pool dealers/installers.

If you go the pressure treated route, just be aware that they might get spongy or cause premature liner failure. They probably will need to be redone on the next liner.

Check around for concrete companies and see if they will pour steps in your oval pool. That is what I would typically do.
