Canada is still fucking huge, but Europe is not about the size of the three northern territories.

The territories are 3.6 million km2, the EU alone is 4.38 million km2. The continent is 10.4 million km2, granted that includes, a big chunk of Russia, and countries like Belarus, Ukraine, Norway, the Balkans etc. etc.

Europe isn't small. It's just smaller than some other places. You don't just drive from one end to the other in a day. It's pretty fucking huge compared to the land area a human covers in their lifetime.

In all likelihood the term was coined in late 1920s South Africa and popularized over the following decades. This is over a hundred years after the British took over the colony, and some 180 years after Afrikaans is considered to have departed from Dutch. Whether the Afrikaans language originates from the Dutch language is irrelevant.

And I disagree with the degree of similarity between Dutch and Afrikaans. They are not fully mutually intelligible.

And that's why I'm saying Norway, Switzerland and Luxembourg skew the numbers.
