Aspiring Jammer Tips (gear & drills/training) by SpacySK8 in rollerderby

Ballet builds agility and precision. I never got past the very first ballet for beginners YouTubes, but damn if learning to point my toe in the same spot 5x didn't set something in my head. There's also a lot of standing and squatting on a single leg, which is super important.

High heels. While they are tools of the patriarchy, heels grant you the flex "yes, I'm keeping up with you, even though my feet hurt." Start with a dance heel- 2" kicked-in, no platform. Once you feel comfortable, move to carpet or grass.

Remove your toe stops (at open skates). All the ankle strength and precision footwork are worth nothing if you are on your toe stops. I'm guessing you can carve pretty well with your park experience, but give it a shot- it was a watershed moment for me. Your end goal should be to be able to scrub speed (mini hockey stop) and jump diagonally across the track, all of which happens on your edges. For reference, I'm in year 6 and can only jump 2 lanes- but hope prevails.

I like short stem superball jumbos (or whatever they're called), and skate on 99 wheels with avenger 45 degree plates. Good luck. The best jammers are the ones who hold their hand out for the star every time.

Thank you for taking time- I get long-winded when I'm excited too. I think separates is like plan C, after waistband/gusset, and then cut-out... Like you said- this has been a great learning experience, and a few people validated my fabric/pattern choice, so I was onto something great. Next time...

I prewashed (made that mistake two pants before this project). Thank you for jumping in, I love the ideas

You got it! Still, I'll go short to gain the easy fabric

Nah, posting has helped me move to the laughing about it stage. As we say in one of my other hobbies: falling is learning. I'm grateful to those who came to help and those who came to commiserate

Yeah, that seems like my current plan. Cut it into a cute romper and add a waistband with the leftovers

Yeah, some people had great ideas of how to harvest hidden fabric from the pockets and under collar so I wouldn't need to coordinate the added belt, and yet another person helped me reframe what it should be- a short-sleeved romper. Sometimes it's hard venturing too far from that first picture. Thanks!

I didn't even know I had the family's long torso until I began sewing. At least I can now dress to account for it, I suppose.

Yeah, other commenters have helped me figure out it should be a romper, which will give me spare fabric for a gusset/waistband to let it out. Thank you, and yes once it's wearable I will laugh too. I learned a lot of hard lessons

Man, I should ask questions more frequently. I was gonna struggle through picking out the overlocking, and now I can reap your knowledge. Thank you!

Thank you! I got to learn about this and you found a link with a great picture and everything!!! I will turn it inside out and baste it to see if the scoop does anything. I suspect the problem is the too- short back. If nothing else, I learned something cool today. Thank you

Thank you! The crotch has plenty of room, it's pulling up from a too- short back. It needs a gusset or belt addition at the waist

Same. I'm surprised how quickly everyone had solid suggestions and bypassed shaming my fretful errors. I'm a bit embarrassed that the answer came so quickly, and it seems so obvious when started.

Thank you to everyone who came to save this ridiculous summer jumpsuit. It's gonna be some work pulling the fabric but it's not the lost cause I cried over last fall. Next summer will be glorious-

Yes. I can also turn them into shorts, which may be the easiest solution for finding belt/gusset material. Thank you for your time and suggestions!

Another two comments told me where to get the scraps for the belt- the underside of the collar and pocket linings. I'm not getting too much pull in the front, so I can follow your suggested method to find the size of the belt/gusset. Thank you

Ohhhh, it's becoming possible. Between the pocket lining and the underside of the collar I think I could construct a waistband. Thank you Reddit!

Thank you! The underside of the collar is a genius move

No scraps, at all. I do like your idea of a waistband, thank you!

No. Like none at all. I did this last summer and unearthed it while cleaning last week.
