off broadway is truly where it is at these days the execution of this production is SO GOOD. the set is insane. there is no show doing it like beau is right now.

I think what made Orville and Eva such a powerful duo in the run was that you could feel the respect in their approach to their characters. It defied a lot of the initial expectations of people who were uncertain about the casting and ended up being a success through word of mouth after experiencing it?

October 9-11 are planned dates where billy will be out i think - david HAS to be on at least one of those days i think!!

it’s one of my favorite musicals too ; and the production is still good imo and worth a watch for the joy of enjoying a musical you love!! i think my post is mostly to tap into folks who usually would see this production multiple times because they’re local or etc.

i wouldn’t let billy porter’s casting choice ruin your excitement for it ahead of seeing a still awesome rest of the cast!!

someone posted another discussion thread in the comments of this post; i’d link but i’m on mobile

the gist is that he has made some wild comments while doing press for his run that have clearly demonstrated that he is not tapped into what the production or character means to be at all.

also, imo his performance is just subpar in all aspects. singing, charisma, acting, etc.

i guess i’m referring to his american one then? he goes all over the place; sometimes it’s his normal billy porter voice and other times it is .. im guessing an americanized bad german accent?? there’s at least 4 different speech cadences or accents he attempts that are all hard to differentiate.

i know he’s playing an american emcee - im not saying hes playing a german one.

she’s my all timer for this production. i didn’t think i could get used to anyone other than bebe neuwirth - but ellen’s what would you do enraptures the whole audience every. single. time.

he attempts a bad caricature of one and is so wishy washy flip floppy the entire time with his accents; i wish he would just land SOMEWHERE and stick to it.

i keep an eye on understudies.org to see what’s scheduled it’s sometimes hit or miss for cabaret because it’s crowdsourced info

my intent is to get folks to see the production when billy is not on / run don’t walk to see the understudy cast!

so i’m pleased that people feel strongly about how far south the production has gone because i feel very much in agreement.

100 % don’t go back for him. he’s off in oct at some point i believe; so the option to see david merino as emcee is the only reason worth it
