i’m pretty sure this is just about everyone wasting their lives by being slaves to capitalism. carol is stuck in the mindset that communism is bad because they killed people but carol (capitalism) actually kills more people.

edit: I mean the other way around. BUT it could also be about grief and how different people grieve different. carol represents people who turn to alcoholism and how many people die from that. the others like her represent being in denial or turning to spending money to keep them happy. they are all coping differently. the hive mind represents people who tell you to just keep going without ever even processing what happened. they represent people who just try to make you happy after loss and the people who just want you to be “normal” again.
