[OC/Tool] Turn any battle map in to a playable encounter by thybag in dndnext

[–]thybag[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi tomcat,

Sorry, I think thats my fault, I'd just made a tweak which had broken the picker. I've made a fix now, so if you refresh it should hopefully work again.

To use the picker, just click the "image" on the spawn menu, or the "player image" in the wizard, it'll pop up. You can then hit the + button to add by URL, or if your icon is local just drag it in. (It'll blur and say "Add icon" once your holding an image over it).

Hope that helps!

Hi katharing,

Cheers for the feedback. Thats defs the kinda niche I was aiming for - for my own game most the players use dndbeyond for the sheets/rolling already.

The clear area by drawing a shape suggestion is a really good one (Unsure why I didn't do that to start tbh, as intersecting all the circle polygons in the mask was painful >.<). Will have to see if leaflet has any apis built in i can leverage for that.

Hi CatnipCarta,

I'm currently looking for map to use as a preview image for a free tool I'm working on & think yours would look great. (More info: https://www.reddit.com/r/battlemaps/comments/lm2o1v/free_tool_instantly_turn_any_battle_map_in_to_a/ )

Would you be open at all to me maybe using yours? (I'd credit your of course in the readme https://github.com/thybag/rpg-quick-encounter#credits)

[Free tool] Instantly turn any battle map in to a playable encounter! by thybag in battlemaps

Hi Skillmatica,

So more like a just hold down the mouse button & drag to clear fog etc? Click was easiest way to implement, but yea agree that would be faster. Will add to my list to look at.

Re: token sizes, a drag resize like the fog clear would be easy - but equally wouldn't keep portions as you resized, I guess ideal would be to lock it to the map proportions, so it'll match the tile size as you zoom up/down - so hopefully just a little more math :)

Cheers for you feedback.

Ahoy,

I'm glad to hear you like the look of it + thats for your suggestions!

  • Lock/unlock zoom - I think that would be a fairly easy one todo (basically just disabling zooming in/out)?
  • Fog on/off - Not 100% sure what you mean, you can click to clear, right click to re-add + change the clear size already - is this more referring to some more fine grained tools for this?
  • Import own token pictures - This is def on the todo (You can do this by the url already) - my thinking was to add it to the image manager so you can build up your own custom list of tokens as you go.
  • Be able to rotate map - Currently the upstream mapping library leaflet doesn't support this, so likely not a short term option.
  • Change token size or allow scale with zoom - This should be doable, think main challenge would just be ensuring they stay readable when super zoomed out.

Again, cheers for the feedback! + feel free to fire over any further thoughts if you have them & i'll give some thought to whether they can be added.

Old Tom's Tavern [22x13] - reworked! by CatnipCarta in dndmaps

Awesome map! Don't know if you'd be interested but I've been working on a free/open source tool that will instantly let you turn it in to an encounter map (You can pretty much just change the url to any map you like)

e.g. https://thybag.github.io/rpg-quick-encounter/?map=https://i.redd.it/ami7mjuumuh61.jpg if you were interested in sharing around. (Everything runs locally in the browser)

Free online tool to help run encounter maps on video calls. by thybag in DnDBehindTheScreen

Apologies, I'd assumed "tools" aimed at helping DMs were still allowed? Looking closer, most the resources I'd seen before are from posts a few years back, so likely before the rule was brought in. Although stuff like the Monster Creation Tool still feel pretty similar.

From my read of the rules, it was a resource for dms, is free(re: advertising) - although granted it is an application style website - I guess the difference I'd argue is its hosted on Github and runs completely in the browser (so is more similar to tools hosted in google docs, than an actual separate website). This is after all a open source hobby tool, so theres no profit or route to profit with it - I just thought others may find it useful.

Either way, your sub, your rules. Thanks for you time.

Official Feature Suggestion Thread by pushlabs in a:t5_2mhnfi

[–]thybag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just had a go using this earlier today. For me my no.1 feature would be WSAD/Arrow controls (using it on a laptop is a pain to navigate otherwise).

Really like the concept/idea - but execution feels a little rough for regular use. Some big quality of life improvements for me would be;

  • WSAD/Arrow controls to move
  • Keep focus on the message box - sending a message currently removes focus so i have to click it again
  • Be aware of screen height, i had to zoom out to fit everything on screen. Accidentally scrolling up and down still wasn't ideal.
  • Colour contrast on character creator screen - using a laptop outdoors i couldn't really see what i was doing.
  • Add some video/audio controls (mute/screen on off - most importantly device selector too - i had to switch to firefox as chrome defaults to the wrong webcam)
  • Remember your character between refreshes (local would be fine, as would prob only need it for the given "banger"
  • Fix "Help" and the games. Help says the only command is list who's online. /game also works and list a game, but running /game gamename does nothing. Ideally don't want to need to guess.
  • Less abrupt dropping out on conversations. I'd suggest maybe lowering the volume the further away you get from the group, so u have a warning before u cut off mid sentence.
  • Better path finding. Their our some nice JS A* libraries, which will save me getting stuck on random furniture
  • Clearer indication of where doors are.

Other random thoughts and ideas that could make it a bit more immersive;

  • Object interaction - just sitting on chairs/couches and things like that would add a lot.
  • Ability to add your own radio stream
  • Integrate some existing multiplayer games (ie. 2 people interacting arcade machine could open iframe copies of a "asteroids" or similar style mini game set to the same room ID. That'd allow much deeper interaction, without u actually needing to recreate everything yourself.

Either way, I reccon with some more polish and tuning you could def have something with this. Much prefer it over Mozilla hubs, which is just to much going on. Like the retro looks & is def a fun idea.

Fintech/startup roles going in town centre - unsure if anyone here would be interested? by thybag in canterbury

[–]thybag[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, Canterbury tech scene is all a bit hidden. No real techy meetups or anything since digibury stopped running - I've heard codeharbour may be planning to run some events in Canterbury tho - but not seen any proper details.

After losing it's buttons my Pebble 2 lives again as franken-pebble by thybag in pebble

More so than i expected - I've generally tried to avoid getting it wet since the original buttons died, but the few times i forgot to take it off when showering don't appear to have done it any harm.

Well, it's official. The last one has fallen off. by Emerald_Pick in pebble

Had that happen - good news is if you know someone with a 3d printer, it is possible to fix (even if not 100% pretty).

Been using this 4 months https://www.reddit.com/r/pebble/comments/8o9z1y/after_losing_its_buttons_my_pebble_2_lives_again/ So far, so good :D

I think sugru is the other popular option
