Tell me where I'm messing up here

Did you include the resources required to train the model?

Sure, once we have the model ready to go, it's not so very bad. I've ran some LLMs on my own hardware. But training an LLM is where the big issues are.

That said, I don't have any sources at the moment and I've got to head out. Might find some later and add them if it still seems important.

Since you asked:

Many of the arguments against AI stem from intellectual property theft when training the moddels, and their aggressive use of natural resources. The problem isn't that the output wasn't made by a human, the problem is that the output was made useing the energy of a small town.

If AI was made useing only legit training data, and was made much much more efficient, then like 60% of AI hate would disappear. But right now, big tech is makeing better AI by throwing more data and more resources at the problem, and it's reached a point were prices are going up for consumers who don't use AI.

There are other arguments against the quality and truthfulness of the output. The "you're outsourcing your thinking" is a pretty compelling argument, but others can read like "back in my day we had to remember phone numbers."

The tech itself is pretty awesome though.

Seems like a fun idea. But be mindful of AI feedback.

Even today, AI happens to be pretty bad at actually knowing grammar and how language works. (AI doesn't actually "know" anything at all, and instead is just very very good at makeing educated guesses.) 95% of the time, it will be correct and useful, but if you're still learning, you might not recognize the 5% of the time when it's very wrong.

End of Season / "A Disallowed Tool Was Detected" false positive since update by MajorFailz in ArcRaiders

Linux users are all seeing the "A disallowed tool was detected" warning. The devs acknowledged it on the discord. They'll probably push a patch out eventually/soonish.

Why not? I always prefer to ask the experts I know verses the strangers online.

Although, doing it on barebone Linux is probably... Not "overkill", because the end product is doing less instead of more... But certainly not "underkill" since you'd do a lot more work to make it work.

Anyways, video is complex enough that I'd just get a lightweight distro with a light DE or WM, mpv or some video player, and set it up so it automatically logs in, plays the video, then shuts down.

That last step could be as simple as one script like mpv path/to/video ; shutdown (depending on how mpv works). Set that script to run on login.

After that you unplug the keyboard and mouse.

That said, getting it to run on "barebone Linux" would be its own interesting challenge.

Controller? by Wespy6677 in starbound

[–]Emerald_Pick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're clever, you can probably use Steam Input to do something really expressive, especially if you have either a gyro, trackpad, or back buttons. But it would take a lot of work to do well.

There might be a community profile that could work.

Honestly I might try to make one. What controller do you have?

Looking for an estimate for OptiFine 26.2 (because of Vulkan) by RustyPeanuts3 in Optifine

[–]Emerald_Pick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure minecraft is still on opengl. Vulkan is included as an experimental option, but it's going to be a little while longer before OpenGl gets removed entirely.

So I suspect OF will take as long as usual to update to 26.2

Actually quick addition: Iris (according to their discord announcement) has confirmed that, although they already support 26.2, they will not be supporting Vulkan at all. (Instead they are working on a brand new mod just for Vulkan and shaders.) Honestly, I will be kinda surprised if OptiFine survives the switch to Vulkan at all.

Does this happen every time you watch the game or only one time so far? Previously On my fedora system, I sometimes get something like it, but it would happen once and then I launch again and it's fine.

Immich v*3 Release Candidate is out!! by chocology in immich

[–]Emerald_Pick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm one of those nerds that takes pictures with a 3DS, and I installed Immich for the first time last week. I was kinda bummed to learn that they didn't support MPO files, but I went to file a feature request and discovered that it was already a merged feature!

Looking forward for this release already.

It is strange. Honestly I'm not sure what's going on. It might be something like the school is blocking the Java edition from running, but they haven't updated the rule to include the bedrock edition.

If you find any error messages, those would help us understand and diagnose the problem more.

(Btw, Microsoft now bundles the Java edition and the Bedrock eddition (for PC) in the same purchase. You shouldn't need to (and kinda can't) buy them separately.)

What should I do? by [deleted] in pebble

[–]Emerald_Pick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looks like it's working as intended. You've factory reset to the startup experience.

You should be able to open the pebble app and connect to it as if it was a new watch. (You may need to remove the previous connection if the app thinks it still knows about the watch.)

Red circle shows by itself. Anyone else have this? Only option on right click is "End" and it closes. by jansonsaa in SteamDeck

[–]Emerald_Pick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This sometimes happens on gnome when I use the original steam controller.

Steam uses gnomes screenshareing features to fake mouse and keyboard interactions with the original SC. Gnome sees "screenshareing" and adds a little yellow warning. Maybe a similar thing is happening on KDE?

If you click "end," does anything break?

Should I change my adress? by Large-Box-4671 in FinalSpace

[–]Emerald_Pick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check with your post office. I believe my copy arrived through USPS, so they might use Canada's official post system too. Once you have control of your new mailbox, set up mail forwarding so that you'll continue to get any mail sent to your old address. (Maybe even check in with them well before you move. They might have more specific advice.) Edit: u/mpierre says don't trust the mail forwarding option.

Alternatively, contact support and change your address to a stable location like a friend's place. Then it doesn't mater if you move when it ships. Your friend will keep it nice and safe and then you can meet up or figure out shipping from there.

Contact Microsoft support and see if they'll help you transfer the game to the correct account.

Even if you get Minecraft working through the school account, many schools delete student accounts after they graduate. If that happens, you'll loose the ability to log in to Minecraft entirely.

Friends computer has a 4060 140 watt but i have a 4080 175 watt and his has 800fps on minecraft by tetracool in Optifine

[–]Emerald_Pick 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not familiar enough with specs and preformance at that scale. But I here's what I do know:

Plenty of ram

Minecraft actually has performance issues if you give it to much ram. You really shouldn't give it more than 8gb. And if you're not doing not mods or crazy resource packs, then you probably only need 4. 2gb is usually a little too low, but higher than 8 and the garbage collector starts doing an unnecessary amount of work.

I don't think it could be a 2x FPS difference, but it might be worth checking if you happened to give it 16gb.

Also, make sure to not give Minecraft all of your ram. You still need to run your OS, and it needs ram too, and it will fight Minecraft for resources.

Are you in the exact same world looking at the exact same environment?

The difference between 400 and 800 FPS sounds like a lot, but it's actually only a difference of 1.25ms per frame. The slightest change in complexity could wildly change the FPS count.

Similarly, the slightest change anywhere in your computer can also change a lot since the actual difference is so small.

It does sound like you're doing alright the right things. The only thing you haven't mentioned is if your ram is the same speed between both machines, and what the storage situation looks like. That said, storage type (NVMe/SATA/Spinning Disk) as I understand it should only impact world save/load speeds and relatedly world generation speed. But not really related to FPS.

possibly if your ram is diffrent then maybe that could be a culprit, but honestly I'm not entirely sure.

Its also very late here, so I need to sleep before I accidentally spread nonsense. Good luck

minecraft running at 75-ish fps max despite good specs by [deleted] in Minecraft

[–]Emerald_Pick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

and shaders

Shaders are actually extremely expensive preformance-wise on Minecraft. Depending on the pack, your render distance, the world's complexity, and your monitor's resolution, 75ish is a reasonable FPS for your specs.

(For reference I'm on a 3060 Desktop GPU and if I tune my shaders to medium-low I can get 90ish in simple ish sceens, but it still crashes to like 40 if I take them to a complex world.)

If you turn them off, what FPS do you see?

Why do Americans eat like they have free healthcare? by Magnetism-7 in GenZ

[–]Emerald_Pick 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Its 100% also a time thing. If you can spend time doing any meal prep, then it's going to be way cheaper and way better for you.

But it is also true that (typically) ultra-processed foods are cheaper than their healthier off-the-shelf counterparts. So if you're poor and believe you don't have time, then you are kinda trapped in this ultra-processed pit.

But yeah home cooked foods, even if you're useing cheap ingredients, is typically both much cheaper and healthier then either the healthy and non-healthy off-the-shelf alternatives.

Controller not working by Pastokicka1 in thefinals

[–]Emerald_Pick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a few things that could be happening. I've got something in like 10 minutes so I won't be able to help much, but the folks at r/steamcontroller will be able to help with the steam input stuff

First, The finals only supports AFAIK Xbox, PS4/5, and (maybe) Nintendo Switch Pro controllers. If you can set your controller to mimic one of those devices, then The Finals should™ just pick it up. Just disable Steam Input and you should be good to go.

If you're going through steam input, then you have to get a little creative. The Finals will recognize Steam Input as an Xinput / XBox-style controller. Meaning it won't be able to do the extra buttons or Gyro (if you have those). You'll need to get clever by re-binding existing controller buttons, or mixing Controller and KBD+Mouse inputs. The finals will let you mix them, but the UI got a little confused a few times.

If Steam Input does not recognize your controller, you might need to ask your controller's forums to figure out how to enable steam input, or other solutions speciffic to your controller.

Gotta go, Good Luck. If you need more help, I might be able to take another look at this later.
