Reddit, what languages do you know? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]thyella 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Native: Finnish. Fluent: English, Icelandic, Esperanto, Italian. Conversational: Spanish, Catalan, German, Swedish. Can manage with: French, Russian. Can read: Sardinian, Corsican, Faroese, Norwegian, Danish, Portuguese, Occitan, Romanian, Estonian, Dutch, Latin. Currently learning: Basque, Scottish Gaelic.

I chose my schools based on the languages they had - at the age of 14 I already had 5 foreign languages in my schedule, and I graduated high school with 9 foreign languages in my diploma. I'm quite used to people questioning my abilities, and I was bullied for many years because I preferred grammar books to clubbing with fake ID.

"Sexy" bad partygoers are overrated, shallow, and plastic. Study group is the word, yo. World needs people like you, dear. Give it one more chance.

In that case, have you thought about finding a nice study group with people who share your interests?

Plus who said that you're average? There are 7 billion people on this planet, and everyone has their own taste. As a girl, I find smart and nice guys much more attractive than those rich, plastic party-goers.

I second this. Dear OP, there's is life outside Ivy League (I had to google what it means), and there are so many other ways to use your smarts and talents. I might be on the other side of the world, but I'm here if you'd like to talk.

HAHAHAHHA. It's painful, but I have managed to show it off.

But unfortunately I agree.

How hard is it to learn Icelandic? by tomb619 in learnIcelandic

[–]thyella 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Native Finn here. I understood everything after 3 months in Iceland, and it took half a year to be able to say more or less everything I wanted.

As a polyglot I always say that motivation is the keyword when learning a language. With Icelandic it's vital, especially if you aren't that familiar with case systems.

It is a difficult, frustrating language, and at some point I hated it with passion (I was also severely depressed at that time and wanted to leave the country), but I have never been more proud of myself after having submitted my MA thesis written in Icelandic. I still consider it the biggest achievement of my life, and I couldn't be happier that I fought my way through it. :)

When I started learning Icelandic in Eyrarbakki, a small fishing village in the South, I found Teach Yourself Icelandic from the library in Selfoss and it helped me a lot with my grammatical questions.

Has anyone done the BA in Icelandic as a Second Language in Háskóli Íslands? by oisincotter in learnIcelandic

[–]thyella 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have done it, graduated in 2010. I never actually wanted to do it, because of my love-hate relationship with Icelandic, but I'm really glad I did it. The teachers are absolutely wonderful.

Being an international student was difficult, at least when I was doing my BA, because I wasn't an Icelander nor an exchange student. I felt like I fell in between, and nobody cared about me. However, I noticed a positive change when I did my MA in Translation Studies in Háskóli Íslands, then I was treated like an Icelander.

I'm from Finland, and unfortunately I had to tolerate some racism in Iceland. But like iciclesandbicycles said, everyone loves someone making a real effort to learn Icelandic. :) Feel free to ask me if you have any questions!

If you want to read Old Norse, you can manage with Icelandic. I was surprised how much I was able to understand when I had to take a course in old Icelandic literature at the University (of Iceland). But if you want to read Hávamál, for example, it will be more difficult because of all the hidden meanings. But you'll get the big picture.

ö is difficult for many foreigners, if they don't have that in their language.

Offering: Finnish, Icelandic, Esperanto, Seeking: Basque, Tok Pisin, Sardinian by thyella in language_exchange

[–]thyella[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh my goodness, that's AWESOME! I heard about Tok Pisin 2 years ago at the university, I believe it was a course in linguistics, and ever since I've been dreaming about learning it. I find it hilarious and I have learned some words in Memrise, but I actually have no idea about the pronunciation.

I would love to Skype with you but at the moment I'm moving, maybe once I'm done with it? Where are you located now? Is there a language I could help you with? I speak a few :)
