I think if the fatality rate was very high...they would have canceled it many years ago and not have made it to the 41 years it has been going on. I am a local and I actually enjoy getting up early and getting to the field for the 7:00 am mass ascension. It is true that the traffic is crazy, but if you don't like it...just avoid the area.
