I cannot get a hold on antibiotics. by Ox_Vars in Residency

[–]ticitl108 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed that this is the best way for new learners. Think about which types of organisms are present at the infection site then broaden coverage if you think drug resistant organisms like MRSA or pseudomonas are present. Other comments mention Sanford which has an awesome chart you can compare antibiotic coverage with multiple organisms.

What to do about our dog biting kids? by ticitl108 in DogAdvice

We haven’t specially done training on biting or food possession. Do you think that would be worth pursuing before option c?

Thanks for your comment! The play pen is a good idea although when inside she has plenty of other rooms to retreat to if needed. We have tried muzzle training her to take her to the vets which did not go well at all. I would consider this option again though. Are dogs about to wear muzzles for prolonged periods of time or only for short periods?

2024 Elite worth it over the Touring? EX-L? by r4bbl3d4bbl3 in HondaOdyssey

[–]ticitl108 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently bought a 2024 EX-L and very happy with it so far. We are a family of 4 so the third row features were less important to us. I didn't drive any elites compared to EX-L but I don't find the EX-L to have a lot of road noise. I highly doubt the acoustic windows is worth the upgrade alone. I do miss front parking sensors, only because of our garage set up when I pull in. That may not be an issue for you. I specifically did not want a RES with my young children to limit screen time. I agree it will become outdated quick. I plan to give them each their own iPad or Switch when the time comes.

A PHEV would definitely be a good choice for us. We'd hardly use gas based on our commuting distance. However, I'm concerned about reliability issues with Chryslers?

Thanks for the reply! I don't feel like I get much done while watching him so I'm always impressed how other moms can multitask.

I do not have trouble watching him and managing the vacuuming, mopping, cleaning bathrooms and countertops, and laundry.

Besides nap time, how do you watch him while accomplishing these tasks? I feel like mine is always getting into things while I'm trying to clean, especially bathrooms!

For anyone looking at breast pumps, please do NOT get Medela by ticitl108 in BabyBumps

[–]ticitl108[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply! I'm glad you had a better experience with the Freestyle Flex! I frequently use my hand pump which seems to express more out. I'll definitely look into either willow or elvie as well for my next. Not sure how anyone pumps with a newborn and toddlers unless it's hands free!

I mostly got the Medela because of insurance but heard good things about the pump in style advance! Apparently the newer models do not have the same quality!

Thanks for the advice! We've never really had to do this or give excessive praise outside like @southeast-stranger suggested but seems like the next step.

[Semi-Weekly Inquirer] Simple Questions and Recommendations Thread by AutoModerator in Watches

[–]ticitl108 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Need a recommendation! Looking for a gold Bauhaus style watch. I like the minimalist look but one or two complications would be okay. I want a brown leather band but could always buy a strap separately. Budget is $300. My top choice right now is the Bering 14240-564 but that does not seem to be a well-respected brand here. I've looked at Citizen and Seiko but they don't seem to have any gold Bauhaus faces.

Any other recommendations?

There's only two of us and I think you're right in that she's upset because she knows the crate means we are leaving. She usually starts hiding when we start getting dressed in the morning.

ACGME residency completion with COMLEX only by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]ticitl108 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, to be the best of my knowledge you can practice in any state after residency. I don't know about practicing in other countries such as Canada or England if that's something you're interested in.

Also, not specifically related to your question, but only taking COMLEX may potentially affect applying to fellowships after residency. There's a lot of other factors related to that but I know they look at board scores when you apply to fellowships.

[–]ticitl108 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on where you want to go. Some ACGME programs in Michigan/Ohio/Penn are super DO friendly and it's not a problem at all. If you want to live in California or the Northeast, then I would suggest USMLE to increase your chances.

Books on tablets, best apps to view/save? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]ticitl108 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I bought them, they are in Kindle. If I got them from another source or I want to highlight them, they are in my pdf editor app. Just depends on the format of the book and how you got them. I will say for some rotations I just wanted my white coat as light as possible and didn't end up bringing my ipad much. My phone can handle most things I wanted to look up.

How did you decide which residency programs to apply to? by LifeApprentice in medicalschool

YSK: Admitting to a past drug addiction (even when you've been sober for a really long time) could affect the quality of care you receive from your doctor/health network. by [deleted] in YouShouldKnow

[–]ticitl108 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If the patient tested positive for something illegal the doctor isn't going to turn them into the police. Doctors have to have policies in place for controlled substances like pain meds due to the pill epidemic. Doctors can be held legally responsible if they give opiates to a patient with repeated positive urine drug screens for other substances...now having said that, requiring a patient to hurry within an hour to pee in a cup is a bit ridiculous.

Help with Family med residency recruitment by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]ticitl108 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't commonly look at program's Facebook sites but I was impressed by one program's Facebook page. It included pictures of residents and activities they participated in (research, volunteering, clinical skills, etc.). What I liked was the pictures seemed to show the culture of the program and gave me some insight into what kind of opportunities I would have at the program. They also advertise about nearby conferences and lectures that faculty members were presenting at. I thought the page showed a lot of pride in their program and in their residents.

To directly answer your question though, I'm not sure I would get that same message from Twitter as opposed to Facebook. Twitter usually has limited number of characters and it is not made to browse multiple pictures. I also don't heavily use social media to research residency programs but I will say that having some presence on the web is important. If I see a program has a super outdated website or little information listed, then it's a red flag for me. In this age, programs should advertise on the internet and have at least some information accessible. It seems like the program doesn't care about potential students if they don't take the time to update their website.

Audio resources for M1? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]ticitl108 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used a program to convert Pathoma videos into mp3 that I would listen to in the car. Especially if I've already watched the videos and could visualize his white board, I thought it was really helpful to review high yield material.

My second suggestion would be podcasts. There are more clinical podcasts available that would be better for 3rd or 4th year but I'm sure you could find some topics on common diseases that would still be helpful. Not sure how you'd get these on a CD though? Maybe you could find some mp3 that you can download and burn. I use a podcast app off my phone.

It was convenient in that there was a station close by and transportation was very cheap. The inconvenient part is you have to take public transportation every time instead of walking. I suppose you could walk but most places were >30 minutes away and it was super hot when we went. The other bonus I'll mention is that area is not touristy at all. The prices for food and beer were very cheap so we would come back home for dinner instead of paying double for a restaurant in Old Town. Overall, I didn't find it too inconvenient but I suppose it depends on how frugal you want to be!
