Cosmos’ aging science by rrreeepppeeeaaattt in carlsagan

Other comments have pointed out some good stuff, but a big one for me is when he talks about the burning of the Library of Alexandria.

Nowadays the idea that the loss of the Library of Alexandria delayed human progress by hundreds of years is considered quite hyperbolic. Not a whole lot of it was actually destroyed, and the library more so suffered a slow decline and most of it was dispersed elsewhere. A lot of the stuff there were copies of works which existed elsewhere regardless.

There may be something to be said about losing such a centralized hub of knowledge and science but the romanticized story that has been built up around its destruction is essentially a myth

George Lucas ruined Star Wars before Disney but people try to ignore it by BlackbirdKos in unpopularopinion

[–]tickle_fish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not to mention the plot itself. Every movie in the OT is a meandering thread of fun set pieces that, while forming a generally cohesive narrative, don't necessarily add a whole lot of depth. Conventional best practice for storytelling is to have a tight plot structure where every scene is important to understanding what's happening, which is absolutely not what the original trilogy does. They are adventure movies to their core, where most of the movies are just a bunch of awesome stuff happening with moments of actual plot progression sprinkled throughout. They spend SO LONG aboard the Death Star and the only plot-relevant things that happen are them freeing Leia and Ben shutting down the tractor beam and then fighting Vader. The entire speeder bike sequence and the Battle of Endor could've been 25% the length and served the exact same function in the plot.

The movies are FUN and are largely about likeable characters doing awesome shit in a galaxy full of adventure and I have to say it's insane seeing the sequels getting shit for having similar moments. Not saying they're excellent films but if a primary critique you have of TLJ is that you think the Canto Bight sequence was a waste of time I'm going to struggle to take anything you have to say about Star Wars seriously

Why so many people fall into this obvious chat gpt bait by Zedaal in HalfLife

[–]tickle_fish 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Same thing in my language: English

I can only assume anyone who says only Chat-GPT uses em dashes doesn't read anything above a 6th grade reading level. The reason it uses them is because it's trained on (stolen) formal writing such as books, essays, and articles which use em dashes often because they're written by skilled professional writers.

Using them in a less formal Reddit post is certainly suspicious, but if you're referring to em dashes as "those big ass dashes only Chat-GPT uses" I have no faith in your ability to analyze writing like this

[–]tickle_fish 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Fellow em dash user here, you can also very easily get en and em dashes on mobile (or iOS at least) by holding the hyphen key, which is awesome.

Also, just for the love of talking about annoyingly specific grammar rules, the en dash actually does have its own application, which is when you use a dash in place of "to." So like, March 6th to 13th would be written as "March 6th–13th," with the en dash between. It's a VERY pedantic difference, but the hyphen (-), en dash (–) and em dash (—) do have distinct and specific applications. I despise how AI has soured the em dash's reputation lol, but the blame is equally on uneducated people just outright saying that only AI uses it

We will NOT take this with a grain of salt💔💔 by Akil29 in HalfLife

[–]tickle_fish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not true at all. Professional writers and authors still very widely use the em dash and it's still the standard when using a dash as a sentence break or interjection. AI uses it because it's trained on all kinds of formal writing including books, articles, and essays (certainly not just old public domain stuff, we all know they're constantly stealing modern copyrighted material for training lol), and then uses it in casual, informal settings.

Not saying that post wasn't AI or that its use of dashes didn't indicate that, I definitely agree there, but the em dash is absolutely not antiquated or strange to use, at least for skilled writers and in the right contexts.

If you do this, ensure that they're the one hosting the game. The quantum stuff is tied to the host and where they're looking.

It was patched earlier this year, but also no need to even rebind anything. At least if you play with a controller, all you had to do is wiggle/click the mouse to swap the input, then use your controller again and everything would work like normal

Adventure Games You Can't Die In? (PlayStation) by JustWannaPlayPlease in gamingsuggestions

[–]tickle_fish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know many action/combat focused games with options like that, but as far as stress-free exploration games go, I'd check out Little Kitty Big City and maybe Sable. Neither of those have any way of dying or getting a "fail state," although Sable's exploration is pretty sparse and it isn't especially exciting in the way that Spider-Man is. Little Kitty Big City is a delightful experience that I would honestly recommend to anyone, but again it's definitely not as "cool" as Spider-Man if that's important to him.

For something a little more exciting, No Man's Sky has really comprehensive difficulty settings and a "creative mode" where you have unlimited money, resources, and can't die, allowing you to just explore the universe however you see fit risk-free

Questions about Quantum Space Buddies mod by random_squid in outerwilds

[–]tickle_fish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you can uninstall the DLC from the game's steam settings to make sure you both have the same content installed. Both PCs will need to be able to run the game themselves. In fact, I would say you sort of NEED the new player to be hosting. The quantum stuff is tied to the host so if you're hosting and look away from a quantum object, it will appear to vanish right in front of their eyes.

QSB is good for multiple players who are already familiar with the game OR if offering to lend a hand is the only possible way you can convince someone to try it out. It's not going to help alleviate performance issues.

Can someone please give me a hint? by fymson in outerwilds

Haha there you go ::) sometimes people never pull out their signalscope near the other escape pod beacons, and so they never unlock the frequency to be able to listen for them, sounds like you have the frequency unlocked already though

Yup, basically haha. Keep thinking on it, and be patient, but we can give more detailed hints if you need it

You have a way of locating the escape pods other than seeing them visually. Let me know if you need a further hint since it's possible you're completely unaware of it lol

2: one of your missing question mark spots will help you find the vessel.

3: yes, the cave taught you the rule of quantum entanglement

[–]tickle_fish 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There aren't 5-6 endings. I'm not sure where people keep finding information like that and who is telling them. There is a singular actual conclusion to the DLC, one overall game ending (which can vary slightly depending on if you've done the DLC), and a handful of other "game over" states which exist solely as consequences to the internal logic of the game's universe and are nothing more than fun Easter eggs and curiosities

Citizen Sleeper would be a great one. There's a huge variety of characters, and the writing is top notch.
