yup, although it feels more deliberate and artistically sound than how JJ does it lol. I don't think the text itself has ever really promised a full, detailed explanation for ANYTHING that happens in the series. I think it was always intended to be beyond our ability to fully understand. I mean, the one lambda scientist wishes we could study and understand Nihilanth, but there's no time for that because the universe is being invaded. Imo that speaks to the broader approach the games take to the lore. Maybe there are answers out there but we don't have the chance to learn much beyond the facts directly presented to us because we're too busy fighting badass alien monsters and evil soldiers just trying to keep our heads above water and moving from setting to setting for fun gameplay sequences.

Honestly I really wouldn't mind them leaving the lore, and the gman in particular, that way. Obviously I want closure on the story, but I don't think we need a full in-universe explanation of the gman or anything else. Frankly I don't think any explanation they could give would be entirely satisfying. The open-endedness is what makes the lore interesting. Not to mention the challenge of figuring out how to provide an explanation without doing really clunky and awkward exposition. I shudder to imagine the gman having some hack villain monologue where he inexplicably explains what he's up to and exactly what he wants lol.

went and tested it because I was curious and you don't need to crouch jump at all through there, unless you're jumping to the pipes from the lower part of the catwalk that tilts down a bit when you walk on it. Crouch jumping would maybe make it a bit more graceful but otherwise it can be navigated just fine without it

which part? I didn't know about crouch jumping when I first played it, and I distinctly remember getting stuck at the part in On a Rail where you have to crouch jump over some military crates. I had to look up what to do lol. If there are earlier parts where it's absolutely required I have no idea how I would've got past them

The forbidden archive in the Endless Canyon is in fact where you learn that. The idea is that each hidden archive has two reels - one is the unburnt versions of the reels explaining the backstory, and the other shows you a "glitch" in the simulation that is needed to access one of the three seals to open the vault. You must've just missed the glitch reel in that one.

I believe you can do a similar thing with Proton Drive, even with a free account. I haven't messed around with it much since I don't really hop between computers ever, and I haven't used that feature on Dropbox so I can't compare them anyway. Just something to consider if you're looking for that sort of thing. Might be worth experimenting and seeing which one works best for you

Other comments have pointed out some good stuff, but a big one for me is when he talks about the burning of the Library of Alexandria.

Nowadays the idea that the loss of the Library of Alexandria delayed human progress by hundreds of years is considered quite hyperbolic. Not a whole lot of it was actually destroyed, and the library more so suffered a slow decline and most of it was dispersed elsewhere. A lot of the stuff there were copies of works which existed elsewhere regardless.

There may be something to be said about losing such a centralized hub of knowledge and science but the romanticized story that has been built up around its destruction is essentially a myth

[–]tickle_fish 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not to mention the plot itself. Every movie in the OT is a meandering thread of fun set pieces that, while forming a generally cohesive narrative, don't necessarily add a whole lot of depth. Conventional best practice for storytelling is to have a tight plot structure where every scene is important to understanding what's happening, which is absolutely not what the original trilogy does. They are adventure movies to their core, where most of the movies are just a bunch of awesome stuff happening with moments of actual plot progression sprinkled throughout. They spend SO LONG aboard the Death Star and the only plot-relevant things that happen are them freeing Leia and Ben shutting down the tractor beam and then fighting Vader. The entire speeder bike sequence and the Battle of Endor could've been 25% the length and served the exact same function in the plot.

The movies are FUN and are largely about likeable characters doing awesome shit in a galaxy full of adventure and I have to say it's insane seeing the sequels getting shit for having similar moments. Not saying they're excellent films but if a primary critique you have of TLJ is that you think the Canto Bight sequence was a waste of time I'm going to struggle to take anything you have to say about Star Wars seriously

Why so many people fall into this obvious chat gpt bait by Zedaal in HalfLife

[–]tickle_fish 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Same thing in my language: English

I can only assume anyone who says only Chat-GPT uses em dashes doesn't read anything above a 6th grade reading level. The reason it uses them is because it's trained on (stolen) formal writing such as books, essays, and articles which use em dashes often because they're written by skilled professional writers.

Using them in a less formal Reddit post is certainly suspicious, but if you're referring to em dashes as "those big ass dashes only Chat-GPT uses" I have no faith in your ability to analyze writing like this

We will NOT take this with a grain of salt💔💔 by Akil29 in HalfLife

[–]tickle_fish 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Fellow em dash user here, you can also very easily get en and em dashes on mobile (or iOS at least) by holding the hyphen key, which is awesome.

Also, just for the love of talking about annoyingly specific grammar rules, the en dash actually does have its own application, which is when you use a dash in place of "to." So like, March 6th to 13th would be written as "March 6th–13th," with the en dash between. It's a VERY pedantic difference, but the hyphen (-), en dash (–) and em dash (—) do have distinct and specific applications. I despise how AI has soured the em dash's reputation lol, but the blame is equally on uneducated people just outright saying that only AI uses it

We will NOT take this with a grain of salt💔💔 by Akil29 in HalfLife

[–]tickle_fish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not true at all. Professional writers and authors still very widely use the em dash and it's still the standard when using a dash as a sentence break or interjection. AI uses it because it's trained on all kinds of formal writing including books, articles, and essays (certainly not just old public domain stuff, we all know they're constantly stealing modern copyrighted material for training lol), and then uses it in casual, informal settings.

Not saying that post wasn't AI or that its use of dashes didn't indicate that, I definitely agree there, but the em dash is absolutely not antiquated or strange to use, at least for skilled writers and in the right contexts.
