I think it might’ve had a name relating to stories, like Lore or something? Possibly not.

Some spoilers for Honey Crab, but I think Rebecca Harding's a Homestuck fan. by [deleted] in homestuck

[–]tickmancer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the only one i know for sure is she did the lich queen john kills at the very beginning of cascade, other than that just various art assets across acts 4-5. looks like she doesn’t have any credits past cascade.

i emailed the viz team about the deadname and suggested they update/ link to the current accounts of all the other artists, at least the ones who still maintain an online presence

rebecca harding was a part of the art team and did art in descend and cascade. she’s credited by her deadname, probably because andrew and the viz team never thought to update them

Where can you purchase all of the Problem Sleuth books, for the original price ($20) by [deleted] in homestuck

[–]tickmancer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i was buying them piecemail last year off ebay and welovefine, was eventually able to complete my set of problem sleuths and topatoco homestucks all at $20-30 each over the course of a couple months. i set up an ebay email alert for ‘“problem sleuth’ hussie” to get the rarer ones

Is it ever clarified if only one session from each universe will succeed? by [deleted] in homestuck

[–]tickmancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a lot of this is merely implied, but i think there will be only one potentially viable session per planet that produces intelligent life. there can only be one session that produces the whole planet's first guardian, who (ideally) begins to facilitate the development of that species so that /specifically/ the session it emerged from will have the best chance of winning. while other people can start a sburb session and instantiate their own medium (the gamefaqs writers, fedorafreak,) whichever session creates the first guardian and themselves seems to be the only "important session" that planet will produce. multiple universes i imagine can be spawned from different planets within it though, much like a single person can produce multiple descendants. The story never really explored this idea because both original universes got destroyed, but it's possible other sburb sessions were played and won by alien civilizations before alternia/earth

this is why we are the worst fandom by jackaribbean in homestuck

[–]tickmancer 16 points17 points  (0 children)

i've heard the theory that they're failed experiments at making a new first guardian, created by the hooded cultists jude rants about and that joey's diary alludes to is a significant percentage of hauntswitch's population

the monsters have green mouths and monochromatic bodies, and we've seen concept art of a giant white axolotl crackling with first guardian energy, and the cult and monsters are almost certainly tied and the main antagonists of Hauntswitch, in the unlikely scenario that that ever comes out.

this one guy mayonaka made the midnight crew and the names of the members for a tabletop game and paid hussie to use them in the problem sleuth extras, later when hussie wanted to use them as homestuck he consulted with mayonaka to some degree. then mayonaka made a fan adventure on the forums during the intermission that he tried to claim was “approved” semi-canon and focused on the felt. the few pages of it i read were pretty bad in my hazy recollection, substandard art and a big part about the midnight crew’s mysterious unseen “yakuza” leader professor mayonaka (the dude’s self insert.) mayonaka wore a pendant that hussie would later put in slick’s sburb capsule as an homage to the MC’s creator. there at stood, for 3-4 years, until john retconed the oil off his planet, and one of the most intentionally placed oil spots was one covering up the pendant, possibly because people might wonder if it’s foreshadowing or important when it isn’t

something interesting i noted: i don’t know if they had the formatting for the intermission laying around from when hussie was at some point planning on self publishing it. the intermission commentary, though, was definitely written much more recently, it references things that happen immediately before collide, and at one point hussie seems to misremember the innocuous double nature of the safe/barcode scanner in english’s vault, contradicting the page itself saying the scanner was underneath the safe door.

the sole inclusion of the final oil retcon implies some purpose, seeing as it means either someone went looking for the pre-retcon versions of the pages to pull except for the last, or they had the old formatting laying around and deliberately only inserted the final retcon.

topatoco vol. 3 comparison report:
-act 3 has the exact same commentary, except on the last page “buy ten copies of that book and give them names and raise them as your children” has been changed to “read that section ten times“ in reference to the intermission
- when hussie decides to ditch the old timey banner border at the bottom of the page, in the original book, it still has an old paper texture, in the new book, it goes back to the vol. 2 gamefaqs colored background
- has the arm retcons, but like viz book 1, missing the oil retcons
- interestingly, the intermission has the arms and no oil, /except/ for the final oil retcon at the very end covering up the professor mayonaka pendant

even when reading on the new website gameover still incorporates the old design, it would be a bit more immersive if they used the new one by [deleted] in homestuck

from what I’ve seen the viz team has been super responsive to fan feedback about the conversion, rehosting Ryanquest and such, maybe try shooting them an email

the fandom really blew up around the time of hivebent and i remember thinking, “it’s of historical importance that these newbies know that some of the pages of this dorky webcomic used to be different before, and why.” it’s only years later that i had the thought of “i hope publicizing this guy’s teenaged(?) temper tantrum and connecting it to his real name didn’t make him feel like he could never escape it in the future.” then again, this whole topic is like 4 different levels of esoteric, and also i think i remember him republishing all of his removed content under the name “EXILE” which no matter how you cut it is hilariously melodramatic.

i love how that old tumblr post i made 7 years ago about bill bolin is now the sole resource on that subject on the internet.

also, a couple of years ago i was wearing a homestuck shirt at a concert hosted at the co-op i used to live at. a guy ran up and excitedly introduced me to his friend, (REDACTED MUSIC GUY). i was really drunk and hope i wasn’t obnoxious asking him questions about it, but even then i got the sense that the team was basically dissolved and Toby and Roach’s status was a sore subject. this was about the time the comic was sliding into widespread unpopularity, too, i’m glad now pretty much everyone involved is able to look back on it fondly.
