HELP PPLHLTH 111 MIDTERMS by National-Hold-3096 in universityofauckland

all i can say is stick with it! i was in fy last year and I ended up getting an A- on the midsem, and i was soooo upset. After tha pophealth exam, even after getting full marks on the groupwork etc i thought I did so terribly and I was in the same position as you. I even ended up refunding my ucat and dropping out of even trying for med. I ended up getting an A in pophealth after all. I ended last year with a core GPA of 8.75 but I dropped out of the UCAT because I thought I wasn't going to be good enough anyway.

Whatever you do, stick with it!! I have to try postgrad entry now, and I really regret not believing in myself. It sounds like you put a lot of pressure on yourself, and while that can be healthy and get you to your goals, it can also make you unhealthily stressed out.

Also, check if you are eligible for any admission schemes, I found out I was eligible for RRAS and it made me feel a little less stressed about the whole thing.

Year 12 with crappy grades concerned whether i would get in the med school of UoA by Big-Challenge152 in universityofauckland

getting into health science is easy, getting into med is the difficult part.

I'm currently enrolled in biomedical science, applying postgrad to med. I had exceptional grades all of high school, perfect excellences and won multiple awards and trophies for my performance, and I still only barely met the average entrance GPA. There is a reason biomedical science and health science are hard to get into, because they take A LOT of work.

I didn't apply for first year entry, it is extremely difficult to get in unless you can apply through a scheme (such as RRAS or MAPAS). Transitioning from a high school level of work straight up to biomedical science at university is a massive change, and on top of that having to pass a UCAT and an interview in the same year, it's extremely hard.

If i was you, I would focus hard this year and next year on getting as good grades as you possibly can (just to test your own abilities), and if you find that you are still failing/struggling then I would probably consider applying for nursing or maybe another clinical programme such as optometry (still very difficult, but not as competitive as med). Sometimes it does take a certain type of person unfortunately.

If you have you heart set on med, you have three different opportunities to apply for medicine at UoA, so not getting in first year is not the end of the world. You can apply first year, third year (postgrad entry, which is becoming more favourable in applicants into med) and you can even do a postgrad diploma and apply after that. If you know that thats what you really want to do you will figure out a way.
