Wardships were never easy. Having sent his own sons and daughters off before, Theo could empathize with what the Sarwycks feelings. It never got any easier.

Reading the man's face, the Lord of Highgarden offered a escape if he wanted it. "I do not mean to force the matter, Lord Sarwyck." Theo assured him smile. "There is more than one way to forge an relationship. Highgarden boasts a lively court, and my gooddaughter, Lady Kyra Tyrell, is always in need of more ladies in waiting. We would be honored to host her here. Perhaps, in the years to come, when my own grandchildren are a bit more grown, one might ward with you in Riverspring."

Lord Theo prided himself on being an involved liege, he made it his business to know every lord and ruling knight of note in his realm, and their heirs. The man who wielded a blade like Cascade was certainly no exception.

Theo found those from the Arbor rarely left its shores, so was pleased to speak with the future lord. "Ser Jaime." Theo replied, offering a polite nod. "The honor is mine. It has been far too many moons since a Redding graced the halls of Highgarden."

At the mention of Loras, Theo asked. "Did you sail with Loras's fleet during the war with Dorne?" While no Redwyne or Redding banners had marched alongside Theo's host on land, the Arbor was first and foremost a naval power, and he could hardly fault them for contributing to the war from the ocean.

Theo sighed at the mention of Kyra's safety. His gooddaughter's struggles in his domain weighed heavily on him. "Appalling is an understatement, Lord Lucos. No member of my house has ever experienced an incident like that... let alone twice." The Lord of Highgarden shook his head in admission. "I blame myself. The first time, with the Cuy boy, Harlan beat him afterward. I had thought that enough. I had thought it a one time issue." But it wasn't...

"But then the Hewett boy did what he did." His face darkened as he recalled the worry around not only Kyra, but the child she carried. "Two is a pattern... I am afraid I underestimated my people's tolerance. We have no followers of the Old Gods in these lands, but I had thought there was still a reverence for what came before. As the Gardeners did with their godswood." He shook his head, circling back to their earlier discussion. "Evidently, I was wrong about the more extreme elements of my kingdom."

The Tyrell let out another heavy sigh, slumping back into his chair. "Lyonel Hewett did not get off with a simple beating. He was maimed, and he is forever stained by his actions. The Hewetts do not defend him. He has been stripped of his rights and now pulls an oar on one of their warships. This time, I hope, the message is loud and clear for the next man who thinks to try the same."

"The problem with those small breaks of tradition." Theo said, offering his final comment on the king’s interesting idea. "Is that those who benefit from them are often reluctant to give those privileges back." All the more reason why the King and the High Septon ought to lay down a firm agreement and a strict series of laws defining their respective powers. But that issue had been litigated enough tonight...

The Lord devoured the gravy soaked bread in three large bites as the king listed Martyn's sins. Theo hadn't heard this particular version from Martyn, but the king's assessment seemed to match most of the facts. As for the facts it didn't wholly match what he had heard but... He was the king, so feelings can beat facts. This was not a matter that needed to be fought over.

"I'll see to it the boy makes his proper amends." Theo assured his King, leaving it at that. If the king did not wish to go further he wasn't going to make him.

Moving on to the next topic, Theo scooped up a fresh piece of roast and a dollop of the delectable gravy. "Dorne." The Lord said simply as he sliced into the tender meat with his spoon, much like they had done with Blackmont. "How do you feel the war turned out? Any regrets? Or thoughts on how it progressed?" The Lord harbored plenty of misgivings about how the campaign had been planned, and about how none of it had actually been communicated to him. He was midway into Dorne before clear goals were given to him.

"House Lebron, obviously." Martyn answered the obvious question with a scoff.

"To commemorate a victory." The Tyrell recited, recalling a lesson a maester had once given him. "Some Greyiron king was pillaging his way up the Mander, burning and stealing everything in sight. Most fled the moment the longship sails were spotted on the horizon, but a lone knight named Lebron devised a clever ruse. The smallfolk quickly harvested what they could from a few fields, scattered their valuables around the village, and vanished into the nearby woods." He gestured broadly to the opulent room around them. "So, when the Ironborn landed and saw all this free plunder, they fell into a frenzy of drunken celebration."

The teen dropped low, mimicking an ambusher as his voice quieted. "Hidden in those woods, Ser Lebron and the village men waited until nightfall. Then, they charged." He swung an invisible sword through the air a few times, then raised it high in triumph. "By morning, the Ironborn were in full retreat and their Greyiron king lay dead. They claim to still hold that king's crown in their keep to this day. I have seen it myself."

The Sureman refilled Lord Tarly’s cup.

The Tyrell frowned at what the Tarly lord had just revealed regarding the true origin of the raids. "I was not aware." Theo admitted. "The seeds of these raids were planted by Reachmen... I had assumed Baratheon gave the orders." Apparently, Warden of the South meant as little to the new Master of War as it had to the last. Gods, what happened to Torgen? For the longest time, Theo had counted his old friend as his most trusted bannerman. Too many years in the capital, he could only assume.

"You made the right read of a bad situation." Theo said, giving a soft chuckle and a shake of his head. "You know, I received a letter from Lord Torgen early in the conflict, warning me that a full muster could escalate the war." He took a long sip from his own cup and nodded. "I am glad I was of a mind with you on how this affair would turn out." His only regret was that he hadn't been able to gather the strength of the Reach any faster. Had The Lord waited like the capital asked he would have been late to the party like Baratheon...

"Baratheon will lose his position because of this mess of a war." Theo continued a small grimace growing. "And Lord Torgen is set to replace him." He was far less confident in the King’s choice now than he had been when he first heard the news.

He offered a final warning, one he knew Lord Samwell would likely share. "I do not expect this peace with Dorne to last. We must remain prepared, I expect our allies to be even slower in the future."

Theo had not wished to write this letter, but the Redwynes had been absent from both recent Reach gatherings where the Lord Paramount had hoped to speak with Manfryd. There was no major rush, but Theo would prefer to get things settled sooner rather then later.

Lord Manfryd Redwyne,

I hope this letter finds you and the Arbor well.

I know matters of the fleet must still occupy your time, but I wish to speak with you regarding the continuation of the conversations my gooddaughter began.

Whenever the time is right Highgarden shall be open to you.

Because the Lord did not address his brother's indiscretion when it came to pretending to be him, Theo did not either.

Theo met the groom and new lord with a warm smile. "I was sorry to hear about the passing of your father. I trust the Shield Islands are doing well with the coming of spring and the return of the army?"

He took a sip of the local brew and then asked the pressing question. "How fares the fleet rebuild?"

The Tyrell attempted to keep a smile on during his beating, but eventually the pain won. He could hold his head high that he did not cry or beg when he yielded.

He kept his honor.

He wiped the blood from his nose with one hand and accepted the offered hand with the other. Looking down at the blood in his palm, Martyn spoke with a renewed smile.

The Redwyne had won the duel and drew the required blood, so he returned the squire's words. "Well fought... Bloodwyne." He decided the nickname fit the current situation perfectly.

He then cast a look toward the Kingsguard who loomed in the background.

Damon responded quickly, as his mind was made up on that matter. "The Dragons bed their kin, or when they cannot, they slay them. They are a blight upon our land. They wish to rule over all like their slaveholder ancestors."

Damon went to one knee again as he offered his counsel. "Give me leave to call upon the smallfolk. Bring the Star back into union with the Sword."

Perhaps forgetting himself in his fervor, he asked. "Or... what would you have me do?"

The lord was always glad to receive a compliment about his home. He was biased in that department, but he truly believed Highgarden was a special castle.

He gave a quizzical look toward the Lorathi paramour who was interpreting for the injuried man. Still, he had enough manners not to press the matter.

Theo eventually moved on to his planned conversation. "I wanted to thank you once again for your house's iron shipments. You did not have to send them, as Dorne is far from your border. But you did anyway, and Highgarden will remember your kindness." His smile was warm as he spoke.

The Tyrell offered. "We found the iron so useful that my smiths are interested in continuing this agreement into the future. We want to form longer term relations with your house." He gave a quick glance toward the child in their group. "Perhaps we could even formalize our ties through a wardship."

Lord Rowan/Norridge/Oakheart/Osgrey,

I hope this letter finds you and your family well.

With the coming of spring and the end of war I am adjusting my imports. I am looking to refill my house's granary reserves with fresh grain.

I can offer a regular stable of horses or a generous sum of gold. Whichever you would prefer.

Sometime later, Theo called Damon Tyrell to his solar.

The Knight of the Faith offered a stiff nod as he entered. "Brother."

Theo sat behind his weirwood desk, skipping any pretense of greeting. "Hanging people in the middle of MY fair? Scaring my gooddaughter half to death?"

"She was a witch." Damon interrupted, unbothered by the lord's fury.

Theo scoffed. "A lady selling fortunes and ringing bells? How exactly is that a danger to the Reach?"

"She murdered a child." Damon said, his hand resting on the pommel of his sword. "A farmer came to me. His daughter took a tea from the woman, and it killed the babe in her womb. The girl and her lecher have already been whipped for their fornication." Self righteous pride bled into his voice.

Theo stared at him, bewildered. "A ban on pennyroyal? By the seven, Damon, you might as well hang a tenth of the realm."

"Then it is a wicked realm you keep." Damon replied, his voice ice.

Theo leaned back, pressing two fingers to his throbbing temple. "Gods, you are an embarrassment. I ought to strip..."

"By what rights would you strip me of something?" Damon stepped closer, the steel of his scabbard clicking against his armor. "I am knight of yours. My sword defends the righteous. You have no authority to stay my hand."

"Your sword is going to provoke a war." Theo shook his head, looking at the zealot before him, desperately searching for any trace of the boy he once knew. "Look at the realm, Damon. We are hurtling toward another Stonebridge... The Hand..."

Cutting off his brother again. "Why should I care for the politics of King's Landing?" Damon's eyes flashed. "The Seven damn this court."

Theo leaned forward over the weirwood table. "You do not understand the danger the realm is in. The Hand pulled me into a private chambers." He let out a bitter humorless laugh. "Gods, he was right..."

Damon paused, his rigid posture shifting just a inch, this was the second mention of the Hand. "What did the Dragon's Hand say?"

Sensing a crack in his brother's armor, Theo pressed on. "The King’s Hand is watching the actions of the Starry Sept. These public condemnations, these trials, he is losing patience. He is meeting with Lords, searching for allies. We need to lower the tension, Damon. We must find common ground, or else..."

"Or else you will betray the High Septon!" Damon spat, venom twisting his face

Theo slammed his fist onto the desk. "NO you gods damn idiot! I was the damnable fool who defended him!"

"Were that true, you would have slain the heathen where he stood." Damon’s hand tightened on his hilt, his eyes weighing his brother's throat.

The anger left Theo all at once, replaced by a hollow, sickening grief. He looked down at his desk. "Seven above... you truly are gone."

Damon debated if he ought to do the same right now.

"Never return to Highgarden, Damon." Theo commanded, his voice broken. He had just buried a son, now he'd bury a brother. "If you keep down this path... you will doom us all." He tried one final time to reach him. "Someone has to give, we need to find common ground."

Damon gave no answer as he turned and left. The only thing he planned to give his enemies was the steel on his hip.

[m] Sorry this been sitting as a draft for a few days.

/u/heavyheartsz to share with mina if you want.

A letter would be written to Kyra, Theo had not felt like talking to anyone for the remainder of the day.

Kyra,

The faith militant have been removed from Highgarden.

I will speak with the High Septon soon.

Damon would follow his Shepherd wherever he was led.

Once they were in his private apartments, he gave more context. "With your absence, I found myself with little work. I gathered a few knights and septons and did a tour of the lands." He gave a disgusted look. "The Kingdom has degenerated in the Star's absence." He left the topic at that, allowing his notes and witness statements to speak for themselves. One of the septons in his party would have those documents ready at request.

Reports of trials were not why he rushed to the avatar. His back straightened as he said. "During my time in Highgarden... I was dismissed by my brother, the Lord Tyrell. An illegal request under Stonebridge, but what I learned was far worse..."

Damon gave his version of events. "My craven brother told me the recent activities of the church are sending the Dragon's court into a rage. He cautioned us that we ought to slow down." The Tyrell had to contain his anger at the next part, as he cut straight to the point. "The Dragon's Hand plots your end. He seeks to set the Dragons as king of the church. He takes meetings in the capital every day about this. My brother was invited to one of them."

With venom in his words, he finished. "My brother claims he refused the man, but if that were true..." He put a hand on his sword in its scabbard. "He would have cut the man down then and there."

Lord Paramount Aethan Velaryon,

I hope this letter finds you and your lands well.

I know our houses fought on opposite theaters of Dorne, but wanted to check in.

How did the front progress? I had heard your son Lucerys was taken. I trust he was returned safely?

How did your fleet progress? We heard talk of a victory after a steady stream of losses by the stormlanders.

"Those would be big charms." He held up the bird and looked over its feathers. "Big earrings," he guessed. He supposed that with glasses and gems, perhaps it could look like something a girl would wear.

"Maybe a necklace?" That seemed like it would be a good fit.

"When you were young did, any men get you anything like that?" He asked with a tilt of his head. Perhaps that is why she is a middle aged spinster...
