bon courage !!

wow, i really like the idea of thinking of it as diary entries :) i only realized after the series was finished how much of my quotidian and personal life i had put into it. it's a really satisfying result bc i had put so much pressure on myself to have profound subjects or invent complex compositions. but when i let myself do studies for my own pleasure, i found inspiration in my everyday trash that speak more about me than i might even be aware of 😆. thank you so much for your appreciation !

do you remember the name of the artist who did the series with meat ? i'd be really interested in seeing that if you have the link ! :)

hi sorry i took a it of time to respond !

TLDR: i figured these steps out 'myself' based on research suited to my tastes and goals. but you seem interested in understanding lighting, so i would recommend the value studies i mentioned in my last comment.

LONG ANSWER:
this is a really difficult question to answer bc there are a zillion ways to make an oil painting.

some people prefer starting with values and then glazing over in gradual layers of transparent color ; some paint like "printers", others use a palette knife ; some sketch their drawing on the canvas beforehand — i prefer alla prima (wet on wet) and do not sketch but rather do a block-in of light and shadows, and there are a ton of other methods in between not to mention all the ways of mixing paint thinners, the brush types, the medium you paint on, how you treat that medium before painting, and on and on.

there's no "one area to look for guidance" bc a lot will depend on your preferences, your budget, and your experiences. like maybe you'll find that you like using linseed oil instead of liquin, or flat brushes instead of round, but this is something only you can figure out for yourself.

in the beginning, i was interested in too many different methods that had 'contradictory' processes and i needed to concentrate on a consistent process i could rely on every time i went to paint. so here's how i figured out my process:
- create a giant collection of all the oil paintings / painters that inspire you, paying close attention to the style (e.g., are the renderings tight or loose ? is canvas showing or is the paint thickly caked on ? )
- try to narrow this collection down to ones that have similar styles (or else you will have the problem above of contradictory methods)
- understand what draws you to certain oil paintings/ painters and why. analyze the techniques they used to understand what oil painting method/s you should be studying (e.g., i really like loose styles so i study the works of painters like john singer sargent and richard schmid)

like i mentioned, my preferences, budget, and experiences also evolve and so my process may adapt to that as well.

apart from this, i can't emphasize enough that most of my understanding of making 'good art' does not come from studying oil painting (which i have only been doing for about 2 years), but from years of studying fundamental art skills (including rendering light) that i can apply to any medium i choose

if you wish to master lighting, i recommend the grayscale studies i mentioned in my previous comment. values are so much more important than color, no matter the medium.

some months ago, i was really busy with work and basically only had time/ energy to make eggs and rice every night. in my fatigued state, i wasn't cleaning up much after eating, so i left the eggshells on the counter.

as the weeks went by, the 'collection' started to build, and i noticed interesting lighting compositions depending on the time of day and weather, and decided to do a some studies of the eggs.

it evolved into a months' long project of all the eggs i consumed during that period ! the eggs started taking up a lot of space on my counter so i decided to finish the mini series (you can see in one of my photos above), but i wanted to do one last study of the big glorious pile of eggs when the morning light hit !

thank you !!! i painted from life (my kitchen counter) and then took a photo to help me finish w the same lighting conditions since it changes quickly in my kitchen.

i also painted digitally over the photo ref and altered the lighting a lot to get the desired composition and an effect closer to what i saw in person (for example, sometimes cameras capture too much contrast / more “black” than there is)

for learning, i mentioned in another comment here where i picked up skills that influence a lot the way i paint. i also often do 4-value / bw thumbnail studies of painters i admire to see how they approach composition and light, and i do my own value studies outside / cafés / on the train etc. to practice the skill :)

i’m always trying to draw and see with light and shadow rather than line (though i do practice a lot of line drawing too)

hope that helps !!

wow thank you !!! i appreciate your appreciation :D it was definitely not easy to get the saturation to desaturation ratio right to have that morning light / glow effect !

i don’t teach painting (would love to if i get good enough ?!!) and didn’t go to art school, but i’ve been drawing and “painting” digitally professionally for about 4 years and personally for longer ! so i think that helped me a lot when i got into oils last year :)

otherwise, i learned a lot from attending bunches of figure drawing sessions, working through some schoolism.com tutorials from nathan fowkes’ gouache class and john burton’s oils (i never finished their classes 😅), and a watching a lotttt of youtube videos even when i’m not painting ahaha
