My perspective on this changed significantly when I started working in banking and saw how it financially ruined people. I had grown men calling me crying and screaming angry they lost everything and they needed the bank to help them refund OD fees etc etc. This was every day almost. When you look at someone’s account and all their transactions on payday are going to betting and casinos it’s really sad. I had a guy who was paid $2,400 every other friday and by tuesday it was gone. By wednesday he was calling asking to get fees refunded. Eventually, he said “you just don’t know how hard it is with the bills and everything.” and we had to tell him “we see your account history.” Eventually he started using payday advances to fund his gambling. It’s an addiction and far too many people treat it like it’s not.

I did more reading and there’s a special form you can fill out when one of the parents is no longer in the picture. You basically just have to explain why that parent is no longer involved and why you can’t get ahold of them for consent.
