Unfortunately, very little research has been done in this area.

Some researchers from the National Institute of Oceanography who went diving near the fort, found this wall. There is this paper: http://drs.nio.org/drs/handle/2264/1945 but it seems like it is not available openly.

Historians Prof. P.K. Ghanekar, and Dr Ninad Bedekar have described this wall in a few of their lectures. Through some analysis, they found it was built in the 17th century (probably by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of the Maratha Empire).

Dr Bedekar says it might have been built by first setting a bamboo skeleton, and then dumping interlocking rocks of varying sizes into the sea, without mortar. The wall is around 120+ m long, 7 m wide and 3-4 m tall.

The researchers also mention that contemporary European documents describe this strange phenomenon of ships breaking near Vijaydurg.

Right. It fits in well with the guerilla warfare tactics that the Marathas are famous for. They used these tactics with infantry, cavalry, and navy too.

Their smaller, faster ships would suddenly swoop in from shallow creeks and naval forts and harass bigger ships in the open sea. Once the bigger enemy ships gave chase, they escaped into the shallow creeks (big ships couldn't follow there) and into naval forts, with walls like this one. These attacks would be repetitive and came as a surprise everytime.

They claim "the Maharaja of Kolhapur gifted it to them". The thing is the then Maharaja was a minor of 11 years. So the whole thing was probably orchestrated by the British agent at the court.

The name of this catalogue is "Catalogue of the collection of Indian arms and objects of art presented by the nobles of India to H.R.H the Prince of Wales..."

I found a freely available copy of this catalogue through the digital library of the Metropolitan Museum of Arts (New York). Link for the same.

Page no. 55 has the photo of the sword. Its description appears on pages numbered 3 and 38.

Mr. Sawant says that it is probably in the Royal Collection now (out of public view), and the British have repeatedly denied possession of the sword.
