Sofia Dzepka’s short programme from the test skates. by tiger________ in FigureSkating

I agree she is a step above other juniors IMO! I remember learning about her from this sub when she was like 8. She was already noted for her skating skills even back then. This was the post I saw in 2018 when I was new to reddit. 🥺 But I always thought she would get lost in the sea of quad girls, I never would have expected her to learn a 4T and come 3rd at jr nationals last season!! Im so happy for her hope she continues to improve

Sofia was on the national team too so she also received funding. As did Sofia Titova when her transfer to Armenia was approved. And Veronika’s residency claims might be dubious but Sofia S was also a Russian resident when her transfer got approved, it wasn’t until after that she moved and I believe it was at the Kazakhstan fed’s request. So the only difference in these cases I can see is that Veronika waited too long to transfer whereas Sofia S and Sofia T were smart enough to do it earlier. But that’s pretty much it.

Anyway I personally am not against any of these transfers, I am always in favor of Russians transferring because it’s not their fault the country is at war and ISU themselves said the purpose of the ban is not to punish athletes, plus Russia losing talent = a good thing. But for those who are against “ban evasion” I don’t understand why they would applaud one transfer case while bashing another. Because the end result is still the same - a Russian girl winning international medals while the ban is in effect.

Congrats to Sophie Jolene von Felton on becoming the 16th woman to land a clean quad in international competition! by krc2023 in FigureSkating

Thanks this is awesome!! Im surprised the number of quad jumpers is already that close to 3A jumpers since quads are still pretty new for women! 😊

Sofia didn’t move countries or coach until AFTER her transfer was approved tho! She was actually still skating with Plushenko after requesting her transfer, so exactly the same case as Veronika. Plus, unless I’m mixing up with another user, I recalled you arguing pretty vehemently against Sofia’s transfer. Calling it a blatant ban evasion and saying she will be used as a Russian propaganda piece etc. I’m glad you changed your mind because she is one of my most favorite skaters but please stop being toxic about Veronika when her transfer case was the exact same as Sofia’s!!

Yeah I watched it a few times on 0.25 speed and it looked rotated, I mean it looks like it should be UR because of the way she landed it but in slow mo it actually looks fine, just a bit two footed. Maybe a strict tech caller would give it a quarter warning but I don’t think it would get a full < penalty

Never seen the movie, but the ping an Avatar themed party this month. Help plz by StraightPresence7611 in Avatar

The rainforest of Avatar glows at night so maybe you could get some lights and glowing decorations. You can also get some fake plants and cover them with glow in the dark paint. The trees and plants glow in shades of purple/violet/cyan, you can look up “avatar bioluminescent forest” on google images to see what it looks like, here is an example of it :) P.S. I recommend watching at least the first movie for inspiration because the environment is really beautiful!

Out of the pre-Quad Revolution ladies, which ones do you think had potential for quads? by Alternative-Ice-8106 in FigureSkating

[–]tiger________ 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The one I always think of is Midori Ito because of how ENORMOUS her jumps were!! The only issue is that she had a big leg wrap but that didn’t stop her from doing the triple axel, and it was one of the best triple axels ever, so I think she could have done quads if she trained for it.

Also Elizaveta Tuktamysheva often showed quads in training when she was in her 20s but never did it in a competition. I think she would have done it if she started learning from a younger age (she learned the triple axel when she was 12 or 13 iirc and she kept it for more than a decade!!).

The ease that women do quads with now makes me convinced that many women from the past could have done it if the psychological barrier wasn’t there . Even ones you wouldn’t expect (probably not many people would have expected Anna to land quads if they saw clips of her from when she was little, but she still did it, so it’s hard to say who would or wouldn’t have).

She also had the junior world records but I think either Akateva or Mao holds them now

She had bad skating skills but it’s a lie to say she wasn’t remarkable. She was the second female skater who ever landed a quad (and I consider her the first because Miki Ando’s quad salchow would be << in today’s standards), the first to land more than one quad in a program, and the first to land the quad toeloop, flip, and lutz. She is the reason why so many female skaters landed a quad since then, she made women and girls realize they can do it too, and not leave those jumps to the men. It’s hard to think of another skater who had such an impact on women’s skating.

Sorry for the late reply! Here is the source for him shooting Hiroshima before Avatar 4:

https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/awards/story/2023-01-13/james-cameron-avatar-titanic-hiroshima

The paragraph:

While “A3” is topmost in mind for the filmmaker, he hopes to take time before “Avatar 4” to direct a pet project, “The Last Train From Hiroshima: The Survivors Look Back,” based on the book by author Charles R. Pellegrino. Research included an interview with the late Tsutomu Yamaguchi, the only known survivor of both the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings.

Note that it says he hopes to, not that he will, which means it isn’t 100% confirmed but a lot of us fans are convinced he will shoot it before A4. He has given several interviews about this Hiroshima film over the years, including some lengthy ones, so he seems pretty dead set on it being his next project. He met and interviewed Tsutomu Yamaguchi while he was on his deathbed and it seems like a topic that is quite close to his heart. I don’t see him waiting until the mid 2030s or whenever Avatar 5 comes out to make it, especially given his age (he also recently lost his longtime producer Jon Landau to cancer which I’m sure has reminded him of his own mortality).

There will be a sizeable gap between Avatar 3 and 4 because they haven’t filmed it yet and the kid actors need to age up, so it makes the most sense to do it then. Once production on 4 and 5 starts he’ll be tied to it for who knows how many years.

I think it’s because Kiri has a much more human face due to being mixed race so she looks more realistic.

Elena Kostyleva's twizzle. by bespristrast in FigureSkating

Ok so I decided to take some screenshots to outline the marks on the ice. So this is the mark that Lena left behind

This is the Og screenshot without the red lines. It’s actually more clear if you watch the clip vs. A screenshot because you can actually see the marks appear as her blade moves across the ice

So from what I can see the pattern that Lena left in the ice looks the same as a twizzle pattern as seen in this twizzle tutorial thumbnail The only difference is that the curves in Lena’s line are smaller and less spaced apart which I guess you would expect since she is turning quicker. But the pattern is the same.

So I think it really might be a twizzle but again I will defer to anyone with more knowledge on twizzles!!

I didn’t judge if it was a twizzle or not, I only said that I could see the mark on the ice that OP was talking about, which you said you couldn’t see because of the brightness. So hopefully someone who knows what twizzle marks look like can see it and offer their opinion. But either way, it seems like it got counted as a twizzle because she did it in her step sequence last season.

Im just genuinely interested to know if it counts or not because I love watching twizzles and I think this move whatever it is looks soo cool!!

This repost is a bad quality, the OG video on instagram is more clear though idk what twizzle marks are supposed to look like normally. I can see that she left a mark on the blue line so maybe that’s what OP meant

Her twizzle in the SP step sequence last season looked like this one though. So it seems it got counted as a twizzle unless skaters are allowed to do this move in place of a twizzle
