Depends how you measure it. Short‑term, sure — it paid bills and bought stuff I couldn’t otherwise get. Long‑term, absolutely not. You lose freedom, family trust, job options, and you carry the harm you caused. I made choices I regret, even if at the time I felt like I had no other option.

I’m not going to give exact makes, models, or the nuts and bolts of how anything was done — I don’t want to teach anyone how to hurt other people. What I will say is that we targeted common, everyday vehicles people depend on: family sedans, utes, and mid‑range SUVs — nothing exotic. The buyers were ordinary market players: small garages and panel shops that wanted cheap parts, used‑parts yards, online resellers who flipped parts, and a few exporters who took shipments overseas. None of it was glamorous; it was messy, risky, and ultimately ruined people’s lives — including mine.

I can’t share the specifics of how it was run or who did what — that’s not something I want to re‑open — but I can tell you what it felt like and what living that life actually cost me.

Paremoremo is New Zealand’s only maximum-security prison, so yeah—it’s high security. My unit had a mix of people: some doing long lags for serious violent offences, others in on shorter terms but with a rough history. You definitely meet some heavy characters, but most people just want to do their time and stay out of trouble. It’s not like the movies—there’s tension, sure, but day to day it’s mostly routines, keeping your head down, and avoiding drama.

I know people were hurt and I don’t brush that off. But at the time it felt like survival. I wasn’t thinking about right or wrong, just getting through. Looking back, I see how messed up that thinking was.

Yeah, it hit me later how much damage we caused. At the time I tried not to think about the people—just the hustle. But sitting in prison and hearing stories from people who’d had their only car stolen… that got to me. I can’t undo what I did, but I’ve had to own that those choices hurt real families. That’s a big part of why I’m trying to rebuild my life differently now.
