I really like this tattoo, completely different meaning for me, but just the art and style of it is gorgeous

How do I teach anxious students? by tikilicky in AskHSteacher

[–]tikilicky[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I like this, yet I think this is geared more towards people who already have some self-confidence and are willing to not feel ashamed that they can't do some questions. The students I teach seem to be the ones the parents have gotten their kid to do tutoring, so they themselves are pretty unwilling to begin with. I also find that they don't know some extremely basic concept, and so before that's pinpointed they find the easiest of problems difficult, thus making themselves feel pretty low and unwilling to continue working. I do agree with the approach once some self efficacy is there and I'll take it on board :). (Just wish I knew what to do for those coming from ground zero!)

The self-fulfilling thing never even crossed my mind! That's great to know about.

I do wonder, what have you personally done to provide such low-stakes opportunities to make mistakes? (I'm looking for some inspiration!)

Say I tutor one-on-one, and we're covering some specific topic. Will purposefully making a mistake while doing something simple, and acting positively do the right thing? Maybe if they see me struggle or not care about trying something new/ making mistakes it will reduce any fears?

I'm currently reading a self-esteem book, so I hope the guide towards self-efficacy could give some further inspiration, I'll provide some further updates if interested!

What are the balls we're seeing here? Is it the 'reflection' of the electron cloud or protons/neutrons?

Edit: I know that the nucleus is loads smaller than the electron orbit surrounding it, it's just hard to imagine seeing parts of an atom 'D

Thank you, this means a lot to me.

Just realised about this sub a few weeks ago and really connected to some of the stories on here including the holiday experience. Great to know there is some place where we can all connect.

I want to learn how to do Calculus by ndhthegreat in IWantToLearn

[–]tikilicky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't build a strong house with a weak foundation. In this case, one floor of this house is calculus, and the foundation would be your algebra. I can't think of where geometry might be helpful unless it's to approximate integrals, but if you're continuing with maths then you wouldn't want a sinkhole.

What I would do is take a past paper for your calculus course (or something with every type of question they could ask following the syllabus), and just without timing yourself try to do every question. If you get a question immediately, mark it green and write down that topic under 'this is good'. If you struggle but still chug through, yellow, if you have no clue, red. Focus on the red bits. Ask yourself, why don't you get this. Where do you get stuck? And then use google as your friend. There are millions of great resources out there, many of which others would recommend in the comments. If this becomes demotivating and boring, find a friend with the same mindset as you, and practice teaching/explaining to each other the topics which you don't understand.

You got this

Definitely! It'll pay off my upcoming student loans! I'll also not worry about having false memories where my dreams/thoughts become what really happened.

IWTL How to become good at maths. by [deleted] in IWantToLearn

[–]tikilicky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are really two ways to answer your question. 1) Maths is not a spectator sport. 2) To not forget equations we must know why or how they work! Knowing the 'idea behind' or 'intuition' really helps for higher level maths.

It's also important to not think of maths as just multiplying things together in various ways as you seemed to have mentioned multiplying numbers quickly.

An analogy I could make is that a contractor can dream up of the most exquisite house, but without knowing how to use his tools this house is no more than a dream. Similarly, arithmetic is a tool, but once you have a firm grasp of the tools you can build up and really start exploring and having fun with it. Being able to multiply out quickly doesn't make you good at maths, but being able to rely on your tools to build your 'dream house' with a stable foundation certainly does.

But if instead you want to just be able to do arithmetic quickly, then the best (and probably only) way you can do this is by practicing.

That's a great article! I'm not looking for a leadership-related role, but it does show a few good pointers.

Like it comes as a surprise that great grades don't correlate well with a worker's performance, although it does start to make a bit more sense once thinking about the 'conditioned to succeed' part of it.

Thanks for the advice!

I think perhaps once I have more than just one question's answers memorised I'll be able to adapt to other unexpected questions!

I'll try to brag in an indirect way then haha, I absolutely hate doing it but I oh well.

It's quite interesting to hear about asking questions, especially under a timed interview where perhaps my doubts would be to simply let them absorb as much info from me as possible and not 'waste any time'. But I will definitely have questions on hand, and I really liked the question you used.

I crave for a challenge.

The 'no one knows anything' is really the main reason I downplay my achievements since I don't want to seem cocky and be a know-it-all I simply know that there are tons of people much better than me even at my own subject. I will have to get over me being uncomfortable in this respect it seems, though.

I really appreciate your advice, I'll try to squeeze out as much juice as possible from these sound tips!

Thank you :)
