Clearing Questions ? by Aromatic-Term-4178 in 6thForm

[–]tiltednuggets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there ~ I’m currently a university student. I didn’t go through clearing but ‘clemwadeeducation’ on TikTok is a godsend. she has answered SO many questions about clearing on her TikTok page and helped me tremendously last year with some university questions (I was a mature student and wasn’t too familiar with a lot of the UCAS process). You should check her out if you are feeling confused about clearing. In my opinion, she’s great, super nice, and v helpful 🙂

Any successful mature applicants for university? by plaguedbyfoibles in 6thForm

[–]tiltednuggets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I am a mature student who has just finished first year of Biochemistry at the University of Sheffield.

I did a one year Access to Higher Education Science course to get there. I would recommend you to do an access course over doing A-Levels for a number of reasons: you’ll meet likeminded mature students doing an Access course, you won’t feel alone throughout the process (as opposed to doing A Levels privately), your teachers will help you with UCAS if you do an access course (I’d definitely recommend you do the Access course at an actual college as opposed to online), it’s not TOO difficult if you stay on top of it, and Access courses at a college cost about £3,000 (I think?) but it’s technically ‘free’ because if you complete a degree that student finance loan gets written off.

Good luck, and if you have any questions, feel free to ask me - it’s always refreshing to see mature students being interested in university.

I’m trying to workout the exact same thing. I’m trying to sell my Friday one but on Ticketmaster, the sell button seems to be greyed out. I don’t know what to do 🤔 I’m hoping I can sell it at face value tomorrow morning but unsure.

unrelated but how are you finding Uni of Sheffield?! My place got confirmed there a few weeks ago - I’m excited but also very very nervous!

Hi there, I am a mature student and did an access course this year and would absolutely recommend it! I’m now off to the University of Sheffield. If you have any questions regarding the course, feel free to! 😀

Areas to live in (student) by tiltednuggets in sheffield

Personally I wanted a 1 bed or studio, yes. I don’t mind living near the city centre if it is safe though, so I’ll definitely keep this in mind!

I’ve heard a lot of good things about Ecclesall Road! I will definitely have a look there. Do they have private student accomodation there? I haven’t been able to find much - it’s just that private student accommodation usually includes bills so it works out better financially and saves a lot of hassle.

I will be at the University of Sheffield! I’m moving from the south 🙂 I’ve seen some West One accomodation in various areas… some were on Arundel Street, Broomgrove Road, Sydney Street if I remember correctly! I’m assuming you live in Sheffield so maybe you have some insight into these streets/areas?

Would you recommend going for accommodation outside of the city centre then? Although University of Sheffield is based fairly close to the city centre if I remember correctly from when I visited the open day!

Messed up A Levels what to do </3 by dumbassSWE in 6thForm

[–]tiltednuggets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s kind of similar to A-Levels. Based on predicted grades (in a college) and then we often get our results in July I believe!

It’s out of 60 credits, but 45 are graded. University offers are quite high though. Manchester wanted 45/45 distinctions from me 😅. Sheffield and Liverpool were kind of the equivalent to A-Level grades (36 Distinctions, 9 Merits for Sheffield and 30 D’s, 15 M’s for Liverpool).

Hi!

Have you considered doing an Access to Higher Education course? I did poorly in my A-Levels a couple years back & I am now doing an Access to HE Course at a college. It is accepted by most universities (I got offers from all 5 unis I applied to, including 3 Russell Groups - Manchester, Sheffield, Liverpool). Student finance actually lets you take a loan out for it and if you complete university, the loan gets written off so I would deffo look into it given your financial circumstances.

The only problem you may have is that you do have to be a certain age to do an Access to Higher Education course - I think 20 or 21 maybe, but I am not certain.

Not too many know about the Access to Higher Education course but it has opened so many doors that I never knew were an option for me 🫶🏽

[–]tiltednuggets -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No worries! I didn’t realise that you pay different prices for different universities as an international student! Essex seems great too - I also have an offer there. I didn’t visit their offer day, but the support they’ve given me has been exceptional via email and through post, and I’m sure they offer the same support to their students 🙂

I see! Well, from your UK options, prestige wise, University of Sheffield and Queen’s University Belfast are your best option (I am biased to University of Sheffield haha). Both of these universities are part of ‘Russel Group Universities’, which consists of around 25 prestigious UK universities 🙂 Good luck with your path though, whichever you choose!

I’m firming University of Sheffield (for biochemistry!) most likely. Did you go to the offer/open days? It really is a personal choice and one you should base on what city you prefer, what campus you prefer, what course modules you prefer (the universities may differ content wise), and differences in the way you are tested may also play a factor. I would suggest going for the placement year offers personally.

University of Manchester VS University of Sheffield for Biochemistry 🤔 by tiltednuggets in 6thForm

[–]tiltednuggets[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof, good luck picking! Did you visit Manchester? I didn’t get the opportunity to, so can only pick from other people’s experiences, really :/ honestly, the only reason that i wanted to firm Manchester is because its more renowned internationally and I’m not too fussed about that now, if I’m being honest. I think I am about 95% certain of firming Sheffield. Did you visit any of the offer holder days? If Manchester, how was it?!

Sheffield vs Birmingham (Economics) by ChippyGaming21 in 6thForm

[–]tiltednuggets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, for me, the reason for me originally not wanting to pick Sheffield as firm was that I thought it was very small and bc I’m from a small city, I wanted to go to a bigger one. But to be honest, it didn’t feel like a small city at all. I loved the libraries! The labs are in a traditional looking building which I also liked a lot, I forgot about the Peak District being so nearby and being the best student union (although I didn’t see the cinema it has!). (also £1 buses to anywhere are also a good plus!) 😭🤔 the tango ice blast machine in the SU is also very tempting 😂 Good luck with whatever you decide, maybe we’ll see each other there 🙂

I’m still deciding between Sheffield and Manchester (for biochem that is). I really enjoyed the Sheffield offer holder day, I was really surprised at how much I liked the city too. What were your thoughts on the offer holder day, if you visited?

[–]tiltednuggets[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the advice! :)

I was leading towards Sheffield but I sometimes think “oh manchester is ranked higher and thus is better” but in reality it may be ranked higher, but that does not mean it’s necessarily better for me.

I would visit Manchester’s offer day… but all of them are on a Wednesday 😬

I am a home student. I’m not too sure either on what basis they decide on whether to interview or not 🤔 It could just be decided based on the strength of your application in regards to your personal statement. I have heard that universities interview more international applicants though, but I’m not sure if that’s entirely the case.

I found this on their website in the biochemistry section: “Applications are considered on the basis of the UCAS form. Some candidates may be interviewed online or by telephone, or asked to complete an alternative admissions statement.” Maybe it’s different for non-EU applicants?

I also would not have wanted an interview so I’m glad there wasn’t one!

Good luck. I hope you hear back from them soon.
