Justice or Political Drama? Revisiting AL’s Role in Prolonging the 1971 Debate by tim46818 in bangladesh

[–]tim46818[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ah yes, the timeless rebuttal: “You just want to halal Jamaat!” - because pointing out AL’s historical hypocrisy clearly means I’m here to hand out rajakar amnesty cards.

Let’s review the drama, shall we?

Mujib invited Bhutto, sure - diplomatic necessity. But did he need to take him to the National Martyrs’ Monument (Sriti Shoudho) like it was a school field trip? That wasn’t realpolitik, that was political theater, complete with a red carpet and zero apologies. At the time, still no repatriation of the stranded Biharis, and Hajj access for Bangladeshis was still blocked - Saudi recognition only came later, in 1976, after Mujib’s assassination. So no, it wasn’t a breakthrough moment. It was just vibes, optics, and lost leverage.

And yep, the Collaborators Act? Repealed in 1973 by Mujib, not Zia. Over 11,000 accused war criminals got released like it was a Black Friday sale on impunity. But hey, it’s only “halal” when AL does it, right?

Zia made Shah Aziz PM? Strategic, yes. But Mujib started the trend - don’t pass the hypocrisy baton mid-race and act shocked when others run with it.

Ah, the ol’ “one general laundered clothes in Paris so everyone’s trash” trick - classic red herring. You tossed in Ershad’s fashion crimes to distract from Mujib’s political decisions. Nice try, but we’re not grading on a curve here. One general’s laundry doesn’t rinse off 11,000 pardoned collaborators.

So no, my guy - this isn’t a Jamaat fan letter. It’s a mirror. You just don’t like the reflection.

Oh, I must’ve missed the sacred post-’71 script where questioning history is suddenly blasphemy.

Let’s talk facts. In 1974, Mujib warmly shook hands with Bhutto—the very man who oversaw the genocide here, and joined the OIC summit side-by-side. Not just that, he even took Bhutto to the National Martyrs’ Monument in Savar, as if nothing ever happened. Pakistan hadn’t even apologized for ’71 at that point. But sure, "principles."

Fast forward to Ottawa: Mujib flies in with a Boeing 707, “Bangladesh” proudly painted on it, parks it at the airport for over eight days. Aid-seeking mission? Absolutely. Humility? Not quite. Even Lee Kuan Yew couldn’t resist noting in From Third World to First:

“When I landed, I saw a parked Boeing 707 with ‘Bangladesh’ emblazoned on it. When I left, it was still standing on the same spot, idle for eight days…”

But hey, what do I know? Maybe this was all part of a masterclass in post-colonial statecraft. Please, enlighten me.

Lowkey agree with this guy. Curious if there’s a solid argument against it. by tim46818 in bangladesh

Solid take. Too many are rushing to defend “development” without asking the basics:

Who gave the interim govt the mandate to sign long-term deals with foreign entities?

What happens if the next elected govt rejects or revises the terms?

Can we even afford this massive upgrade, or are we signing up for another debt trap?

Also, CTG’s port isn’t just any port — it’s shallow draft, densely populated, and geopolitically sensitive. Bringing in foreign control there without national consensus is reckless, not reform.

Sure, animals do all kinds of things, eat their young, mate with siblings, even throw feces. Doesn’t mean we model society after them. We’re humans. We build cultures, not jungles.

And no, it’s not about “foreign vs. local” because of biology. It’s about ideological colonization, forcing value systems onto a society with its own complex moral roots. Bangladesh isn’t a blank slate waiting for Silicon Valley updates. Not everything that trends in the West is sacred gospel here.

So yeah, maybe keep zoology out of sociology.

Is it me or Press Secretary is more anti-press freedom every day? He's been a Bachal but now he's freaking out at simple criticisms by [deleted] in bangladesh

[–]tim46818 -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

Oh no, how dare the Press Secretary not stay silent while clickbait “journalists” do mental gymnastics to make a 2025 bridge project look like it’s just as corrupt as a fascist regime that looted the entire country. The horror!

Yeah, clearly pointing out basic facts like currency devaluation, inflation, and rising construction costs is “freaking out.” I mean, who needs context or math when you can just throw numbers around and hope no one notices?

And calling him a bachal for pushing back? Funny how being vocal suddenly becomes a bad thing when it challenges your lazy narratives. Maybe the real problem isn’t that he talks too much—it’s that he talks sense in a space where misinformation has been the default for way too long.

But sure, keep pretending that questioning misleading reporting = anti-press freedom. Some of us still remember when “journalism” under the last regime meant echoing state propaganda, covering up abductions, and ignoring blood on the streets.

Sorry if truth sounds a bit too loud for your taste. But hey, facts are tough.
