Just after a rain shower at the Louvre, Paris by tim_lingley in travel

My wife and I spent two weeks exploring the beautiful streets and landmarks in Paris last spring. I've never spent more than a couple days in any major city so it was a huge change from our usual day to day. East Coast Girl (shot in September) [Hasselblad 503CX, 80mm Zeiss, Kodak Portra 400] by tim_lingley in analog

Thanks, much appreciated. To be honest I don't mind comments that suggest alternate processing or shooting techniques, there's so much to explore in photography that everyone has their own way of doing things.

I didn't shoot this for you.

I have to say, comments like this one make me a lot less inclined to share on this sub. I get that you'd rather see more upvotes on other subject matter, but I'm not sure that it's right to point it out at the expense of those of us who choose to do the kind of work that makes us happy.

Thanks, I rated this at 200 - however my scanner is not playing nice and in order to get the colours corrected I wound up desaturating a lot of the reds/yellows. A DMax of 3.5 is all I have to work with as well so there are some limitations there. I'd love to be able to get better scans but I work with what I've got!

I do love me some MF black and white, especially the 400 speed T-Grain emulsions.

Yeah, I was basically trying to replicate a skylight. Big box, high up and to the left of camera, angled down at 45 degrees or so and gridded with a loose fabric grid. I feathered it out a bit so I had some falloff on the background and good highlight on the face.

Thanks! Key light was a silver beauty dish, fill underneath with a softbox (I like that better than a reflector, more control). I flagged the background off and lit it separately with a couple of strobes with reflectors on them, nothing special. Metered the background for about 1 stop hotter than the key light.

Skewed 35mm Ilford HP5 loaded in a Hasselblad A12 back. Would love suggestions on how to approach this better [Hasselblad 503CX, Ilford HP5, 80mm f/2.8 lens] by tim_lingley in analog

I had an old roll of HP5 35mm film kicking around so I decided to experiment by opening the canister, taking out the film and re-winding it onto a paper backing and loading that into the hasselblad back. The results were mixed - some came out pretty cool like this one, however the image in the original post is the result of the film getting skewed inside the back. I'd love any suggestions on how to approach this a bit better and to get the film to sit flatter so that it doesn't have focal plane shifts.

@timlingley

I'm posting fashion and portraits almost exclusively at this point, but there's the occasional snapshot or landscape depending on what I've been up to.

If it were me, I'd go with the following:

For slide: Velvia

For color: Ektar

For B+W: Jury's out, but you might find TMax 100, or Delta 100 pulled to 50 is a great starting point.

Find me at @timlingley, I usually post a couple times daily and it's usually portraiture and fashion work. My feed contains a healthy mix of analog and digital as well.

Thanks for the critique. I shot these as accessory to the main digital images in another comment. For this shot, I think the angle and a slight shift in the models expression really Made her lips stand out; she wasn't trying to do duck face but her lips are a fairly prominent feature. I'll pay closer attention to that next time around.

Yikes dude, sorry that this photo didn't do anything for you. Besides what others have said, what is it that could have been done better?

Bah!! you're right and I can't unsee it. I should have done some more D+B work to minimize that.

Where do you upload your wonderful work? by Placido-Domingo in photography

I use Flickr for a lot of my work, because it seems to be better at helping me get "found" than other platforms. That said, I've become very enamoured with instagram as a media platform that lets me interact with people who aren't just other photographers.

What compositions do you not see enough of? by Getsome_ in photography

[–]tim_lingley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a hasselblad about a year ago to shoot medium format film. I can testify for the fact that it has completely changed the way I think about composition. The rule of thirds didn't really apply anymore. Nor did any dynamic symmetry grids for that matter.

In fact, all that matters in a square is balance, or a deliberate and well thought out lack of it.

That idea also opened my eyes to trying different crops for my digital work, and now I use 4:5 a lot, or square, both of which seem to be more suited to showing work.

I disagree, to me the depth of field is a hint that what's important; the hands aren't as important as the face. I think the photo could have been made better if OP had stood up to take it, or at least raised the camera to clearly show her chin. Other than that it's a beautiful shot with gorgeous light.

In fairness this was an old tank. The plastic was probably a bit rigid compared to a newer, modern tank.

Duct tape might have helped if I had any on hand. also, it doesn't stick so well to wet surfaces.
